This song is representative of that melancholy 90's sound. "Scars are souvenirs you never lose." "Don't it make you sad to know that life is more than who we are?" A Gen X coming of age song. Takes me back to the year I graduated college.

This is the song that put the band on the map. From 1995's "A Boy Named Goo" album. "Slide" and "Iris" are from 1998's "Dizzy Up the Girl" -- which also includes "Black Balloon" that is mentioned in the comments a few times (and rightly so). Both albums are pretty incredible, top to bottom. Just a great band.

Back during the 90s, when this song was out, my roommate had me go with him and his girlfriend to the Korean restaurant because it had a karaoke bar in the back. She wanted him to sing, but the man can't carry tune, let alone Keri the beat of one. So he enlists me to sing for him. After a long look; I came upon this song, which I knew very well, so that was the song I sang. It will always be one of my favorite songs

Goo Goo Dolls had a TON of hits, but to me their best song was "It's Over" which was never released on the radio, so a lot of people don't know about it. The absolutely sick bass drops layered in with the driving guitar during the chorus bring so much intensity. Add in the escalated auditory posture of the bridge and you just have a masterpiece.

Just recently saw these guys live. They always put on a great show - "Long Way Down", "Black Balloon". This is a great tune! John Reznik wrote this about his childhood. His parents died when he was young and his sisters raised him - ""We're grown up orphans who never knew their names" reflects his past. His dad was an alcoholic and part of the song describes his moment of flirtation with an MTV VJ Kennedy where they shared a kiss and had romantic phone calls even though he was married at the time. Kennedy didn't want anyone to know her real name - "I won't tell no one your name" is inspired by that. time.

So glad you’re looking into this group! I’ve loved listening to them for a long time. You might enjoy showing your children the Goo Goo Dolls appearance on Sesame Street maybe 25 years ago during which they performed a version of Slide reworded to be Pride. Elmo sang lead about making his bed and combing his hair etc., taking pride in his behavior. So cute! I appreciated that children’s show so much, that they would throw in something like that for the parents to enjoy! Around the same time, REM’s Furry, Happy Monsters is really cute too (Shiny Happy People tune, sung with muppet monsters displaying emotions). Great old bands with senses of humor.

Once you turn 40. Anytime you hear this song it hits so hard. Memories of friends and family both gone and alive. Your own journey in life (successes and failures). How fast time flys and how the only thing really keeping your name, and the names of others you know, is your connection to others around you. Eventually, those images/pictures/vids in your phones, photo albums, and picture frames will be filled with nameless ppl looked upon by strangers wondering who they were and what they did. Strangers who are on their own journey to the same inevitable destination.

Yes! I'm in my mid 40s and I sometimes have similar thoughts about life and our journey. Sometimes when I drive through the country and see an old abandoned farm house, I wonder who used to lived there. What was their story? Did they have a family? What did they enjoy and hate? At some point, I think we'll all be unknown and forgotten.

Amber mentioned the sound of the guitar. It is said that Johnny Rzeznik was as randomly turning the tuning knobs on his acoustic guitar when he was writing this song and needed to use a tuner to determine the notes after the fact so he could replay the song again without it sounding different. Therefore unless a guitar is specifically tuned for this song it will never sound right.
