It's sad what's become of Hollywood today.

I have no fondness for contempo movies, but not bc I think that HW today is any worse than it was back then -- it's differently bad, but not worse. It really annoys me when ppl make these lugubrious and completely untrue statements about the past, bc it shows that they aren't doing their patriotic duty ( = get a lifelong education) and instead are falling back on easy. false platitudes -- lazy thinking, which is why the world is a mess today. So, do your duty as a citizen, and use yr damm brain! Btw, romanticizing HW of yore makes no sense, and I say this as someone who loves HW movies from the 1930s thru the 1950s. Most were highly unrealistic and at least somewhat preachy, and the stars were kept on such a short leash by the studios that they cdn't live their lives authentically. And, fans were fed a steady diet of twaddle about them. Falsehoods weaken a society, and the large-scale propaganda machine of classic HW was deeply problematic.
@1966425

@@dw999 Not sure I understand all your babbling but Hollywood, when it was run by studios and men who knew movies particularly from the 30's through the 40's was a machine that produced an amazing quantity and quality of films. Each studio had the best directors, writers, producers, set directors and designers and they cultivated their own stable of movie stars. To say that one is romanticizing and that it was all unrealistic and preachy shows a huge ignorance and lack of knowledge of films of that era. When the studio system finally ended during the 50's Hollywood went on and blazed new trails with some great film for the next 40 years until the end of the 90's when corporations who now owned many of those old studios completely killed Hollywood in favor of profits over quality. Since the 2000s Hollywood has been reduced to mediocre films and 'blockbuster' super-hero films that all have the same mundane story lines. The Oscars which were once one of the most watched yearly events have continued to decline to historic lows in viewership. The red carpet is now a parade of 'who's that?". You seem easily triggered.

She certainly wasn't typecast. She could do drama as well as comedy. She was the only who could have put across the ridiculous line, "Show us some of Tom Barkley's guts!" Herbert Marshall, who plays Jim. See if you can tell: He lost a leg while serving in World War I, and rehabilitated with a wooden leg. This did not stop him from making good his decision to make the stage his vocation. He used a very deliberate square-shouldered and guided walk - largely unnoticeable - to cover up his disability. He's almost 50 years old when he appears in this film. Stanwyck was 31.

Have you seen him in "The Enchanted Cottage" with Robert Young and Dorothy McGuire? He plays a similar character, but in a much more limited sense. He plays a pilot who was blinded when he was shot down in World War One. Robert Young is initially engaged to a very selfish woman at the beginning of the film. He enlists in the Air Corps to fight in World War II, and is disfigured when he is shot down. He goes to stay alone in the cottage that he'd originally booked for his honeymoon, and it is there that a friendship blossoms between Young and McGuire, who was done up to be homely in the film. Herbert Marshall, through his blind eyes sees Robert Young and Dorothy McGuire for the beautiful people they really are, and is a kind of guide to them. It's a beautiful film, and worth watching over and over again.

writeract2 La Principessa Anne Are you saying you aren't like that and don't know anyone like that? If so, that is very sad. Perhaps if you moved you would be with a better group of people. There are many good ones where I live. They work in the schools, in the hospitals and clinics, in the fire dept, in the businesses,.... They volunteer to help others, give generously to charities and those in need, and can be relied on to do more in an emergency. These people give until it hurts and give some more. In fact, strangely enough, I've found people like that wherever I have lived. Maybe that's because I also give and help. Beware cynicism. It makes you believe that the world is an ugly place with selfish people and there is no use trying to change that. That's what the few horrible people want you to think so you won't get in their way. Find those who are optimistic and caring and your life will be transformed through knowing them and becoming like them yourself.

@chachalacojm: That's a ridiculous statement. For as far back as records exist (and probably for centuries before that), humans have been driven by the same emotions, and have grappled with issues surrounding how we live with others in society. I challenge you to name ONE moral value in this movie that doesn't exist today. You can't! In addition, anyone who thinks that the films of classic Hollywood are at all reflective of society needs to get an education; the two-dimensionality of mid-century HW characters is no more real than, say, today's reality-TV participants are. Throughout history, some ppl have been bullies, some have been targets, some have striven for a better world in which people treat others well, some have been grifters, etc. Human nature hasn't changed, and societal values haven't changed since this movie was made. Human rights have been expanded, meaning that women are no longer relegated to wife-and-mommy-only -- which is a good thing for everyone, including the children who suffered bc their thwarted mothers tried to live vicariously thru them/ PLEASE don't make reductive statements. PLEASE use your brain; we're facing existential problems today (the climate crisis; the attacks on democracy in many nations) bc ppl do not use their brains!

It should, you mis-typed it. Tried to edit and add "spoiler alert"... But also noticed the not so nice notifications of telling me so. Have a good life, with that behavior. Plus, what was "revealed" was not a surprise it's what the entire movie was about. The imagination of the writer was in the "how." The movie is very mush well written, directed, and acted. Could you imagine the "trailer" for this movie!?!? Sheesh... Plus, what a revealing initial comment I've typed. Maybe best practice would have been to be kind. I apologize up front to those who are kind in notifying me of my unintentional mistake. To the rest, you are ineffective. To all - Have a good day... Blessings.

Agree. (Maybe if she could tell the truth a little sooner - of being the real mother of the little boy - to the adoptive father, maybe this one would have been comprehensive to let her see the boy every day, like an aunty, for her and Jim to keep their true love too).

This hit me like a train out of no where . I wasn’t thinking ahead like I normally do ,I’ve made the same choice in my life. My kids always came first and I love them beyond what I thought was possible. But in doing so I missed being with the one person I truly love . It hurt hearing her say “ no Jim I love you “

Yes, but in the hereafter all things will be made right, if we just do what's right in this life, like this mother did. Though she should have never made the mistake of giving up the baby in the 1st place for adoption, then she probably would have had both her baby and the guy she loved eventually.

I just adore Barbara Stanwyck, and I have just watched this little gem of a movie for the very first time. What a great supporting cast, although Cesar Romero, and the little boy did grate a bit. The scene towards the end of the movie between Ms. Stanwyck and the great Herbert Marshall, left me a little tearful. What a trouper he was to just walk away from her. I'm not sure I could have done that. She was such a beautiful woman.

@crzxr
@crzxr 3 жыл бұрын
@@anaderol5408 I did notice; but the telegram, as paper, would readily and harmlessly biodegrade unlike the plastic (then hardly invented) which we currently and very harmfully throw into the oceans etc.The other issue is the volume of waste - in 1938 the population of the Earth was less than a third of what it now is. Until we reduce the human population dramatically, all resolutions to make a meaningful difference to the global environment are so much (additional) hot air; the zero sum game must apply on a finite planet: the prevalence and concomitant aspirations of one species necessarily means less space/habitat/ resources for others; cut it how you like, and shy away from the truth, the obvious fact remains. Attitudes of concern, and even actual practical care by well-intentioned people are both largely useless gestures until the root problem is addressed. You can sentimentalise individual humans, but this predictable tendency will not save the species, nor indeed any other species unfortunately. I don't think anything effective will be done, so the situation will continue to deteriorate in practice, technological 'fixes' and international 'targets' notwithstanding - the immutable physical laws of nature, by which we ultimately survive or die out, are the only valid arbiters, and by that yardstick there has been continuous and accelerating failure. Sorry about that.

Little known fact Herbert Marshall On 9 April 1917 he was shot in the left knee by a sniper at the Second Battle of Arras in France.After a succession of operations, doctors were forced to amputate his left leg. Marshall remained hospitalised for thirteen months, he later recalled in private that after his injury, he had initially over-dramatised his loss and was wrapped up in self-pity and bitterness. Before long, however, he decided he wanted to return to the theatre and learned how to walk well with a prosthetic leg.
