I can't tell you how much it means to see a cosplayer as talented as you using such cheap materials to create something so amazing. I often have a very limited budget and end up thrifting cheap clothes and heavily altering them, just as you did here. Before, I felt bad that I wasn't doing everything myself from scratch, but now I realize that making costumes like this doesn't make me any less of a costumer. If it works, then it's not wrong.
@AlysonTabbitha

Yeah, anyone who makes you feel bad for cosplaying a certain way that doesn't fit their ideals isn't worth listening to anyway. Cause how miserable must someone be to shame someone for 1. not having as much time or money as them, or 2. having FUN & enjoying a hobby!

Damn your incredibly talented. I really appreciate the OG Rikku FFX cosplay too. Most cosplayers do the FFX-2 Rikku and the OG Rikku really holds a special place in my heart from playing as her as a kid when I was 10.

Alyson, I'm so glad you made this youtube channel to share your process with us. I've always found cosplay to be extremely intimidating as I assume that amazing cosplayers utilize very expensive materials + tons of high end make up products and use complex methods to put everything together. As much as I admire cosplayers, I wouldn't even think about attempting it myself. When I first saw your work on Instagram, I also assumed that you must use crazy expensive products with very sophisticated methods. Then I found your youtube channel and my perspective completely changed. I couldn't believe that you only use 7 drugstore makeup products, some craft materials from the dollar store/walmart, and lots of hot gluing to create most of your incredible transformations. Watching your videos made me realize that cosplay can be done on a budget with unconventional/simple methods AND still look AMAZING! The biggest cost seems to be passion, patience, and of course, skills built from years of practice. I wondered how well these cosplays last/endure wear and I was very pleasantly surprised to hear that your Rikku wig doesn't lose shape or colour. I'm wondering, how do you deal with rainy weather? Does it ever cause your painted clothes/armor to lose colour? Thank you SOOO MUCH for sharing your passion with us! Huge FFX fan and this brought back so much nostalgia, I hope you do a Yuna video too~

This was such an incredibly sweet comment, thank you for taking the time to write all of that! It really means a lot to me! So far all the cosplays I've made since I started 5 years ago have held up surprisingly well. Even my wonder woman cosplay that I wear nearly twice a month for a year now is still in great shape! RAINY WEATHER? xD I think I can speak for many cosplayer that when it rains we RUN TO COVER!!! xD Not that this would fall apart or the paint will start running when wet, it would probably be just fine, but being in cosplay in the rain is no fun! lol Plus the good thing about paint is that if it does fade from wear, you just touch it up with some more paint! :) or you can use fabric paint which works just as well, (i'm just cheap lol)

I guess I might have assumed only because of how the collar looks sometimes in the game, but actually it looks exactly like yours (or randomly leathery depending on the picture), you nailed it so well, can't even!

A tip from a miniature artist: when painting really small, lightweight pieces, you can lay down painter's tape sticky side up, and then stick the pieces down so they don't move when you paint them.

Amazing! I would love to see a more in-depth video of your watered down acrylic paint technique (ratio of paint to water, stroke movements, painting different fabrics, etc.). Your painted cosplays always look so professional, smooth, and blended. It’s clear that you’ve mastered it. I’m always scared that I would cause a streaky or blotchy mess if I do this same technique.
@AlysonTabbitha
@AlysonTabbitha 5 жыл бұрын
I think I should make a video completely dedicated to to painting fabrics & stuff & ratios, how it will effect the texture, what happens when you put too much & how it holds to different fabrics! I've don't this so often I've learned a lot over time so there's a lot I could talk about in a vid! Everything does take practice tho! So maybe it will turn out blotchy the first time you try, but you'll learn as you go the best way for you to apply, & get better naturally over time! :)

I love how you just kinda wing it for every step of your cosplays. I mean you have a general idea on how to execute it but then you dont go super detailed in what materials to use or spend forever thinking on it. You dont hesitate you just start and get it done it's nice. Having cosplays all made this way shows how long you've been doing it too it shows how comfortable you are with the routine. Do you have an Instagram handle? Oh yeah you do

Thank you so much! I was actually told the other day that I was cheating when I cosplay because I use thrifted or buy cheap pieces of clothing in order to work off of when I do cosplays because either I don't have the time or money to buy or make a cosplay from scratch (full time college student). This person said that you're only a true cosplayer if you make everything or buy the whole cosplay off of a website. And then they said that there are no famous cosplayers that do what I do, and so I showed them your channel and they stopped talking to me. So thank you for being you and having your channel!!!! 💖💖

does painting the fabric cause it to get stiff of does it feel scratchy on your skin?
@AlysonTabbitha
@AlysonTabbitha 5 жыл бұрын
The more paint to add the stiffer the fabric gets! That's why for the shirt I watered it down & applied it very lightly, & for the "wings" I applied it thick which was perfect! gotta figure out when stiffer fabric is a pro or con!

Amazing! It's incredible how cheap this done but awesome it looks. Hopefully I can use some of these techniques myself. But I really worry about painting clothes with normal paint. Won't it crack? How does it behave if I have to clean a spot?
@AlysonTabbitha
@AlysonTabbitha 5 жыл бұрын
Paint on fabric kinda absorbs & holds to the fabric. It could crack if you apply a reallyyy thick layer which isn't usually ever necessary. I tend to not get my costumes dirty, & sanitize them with disinfectant sprays but if you got something really dirty & had to scrub it, you would probably have to re-paint the section just like you would with armor.

You can also mix fabric medium or use fabric paint (there's some that set with air drying and others that set with heat) after letting it set properly you'll be able to wash it. It should help it bind better to fabric too rather than only using water to lengthen and water down the acrylic. which you'll probably still need the water but the medium should help with longevity ( which is what I did to make the wings on my rinoa cosplay. I painted them with a watered down acrylic paint and fabric medium mixture. Then I heat set my design when it dried So it can be washed)
