They've always been in a bit of a weird place. People who know them love them. Sadly, not everyone has been exposed. They're kind of a like a badly kept secret. I think it has something to do with them not really fitting into any "box" that would get them any real consistent radio time. But yeah, they are NOT underrated by those who know of them.

I saw the Cult live in October of 1988 and they were the best sounding live band I ever heard. They really do sound as good live as the studio recordings. That just shows how much they care about their live sound. He danced, a lot, while singing and there was no interruption with his breathing. He was smooth, clean and clear. Truly amazing live band. It's a shame on the music industry that they never got much recognition because they were actually very popular with the public.

My grandparents stayed at a motel once and the cult were next door. My grandmother said they had "very pretty bikes" they were polishing and were very polite when they were speaking with them and asked if they were the "boys in the cover" of the local entertainment rag they picked up. My grandfather looked like Santa and would draw people in wherever he went, so they met the Cult and said they were nice boys.

This song, amongst all of the 80s metal bands - to me - is the quintessential blues/hair/metal rock that has the growl, the drive, the supreme 4 on the floor straight adrenaline build that just has the great hook you can help but sing and stomp to. It was very common of 80s metal bands to film music videos at arena tour setups, catch it over a few sound checks and youve got a music video. This song, as all the comments before me say, is perfect to blast loud and sing your head off to!

Whan Ian was a kid his dad was in the RAF and was posted to an American airbase in the US. Ian attended a US school and was bullied by some of the students as he was the outsider. The kids from the First Nations community did not bully him and he struck up friendships with them. This gave him an appreciation and interest in their culture which can be seen in the way he styled himself, heard in the music and indeed seen in some of the dance moves!

The singer is Ian Astbury and he's an amazing frontman, but never seems to be in the discussion about the greatest frontmen of all time. In my opinion, he's right up there with the likes of Mick Jagger, Steven Tyler and Axl Rose to name just a few. He's a true entertainer and Billy Duffy absolutely slays the guitar. Fell in love with The Cult in 85. Album Love is in my top 10 of all time. Beautiful production. Billy Duffy is one of my favourite guitar players. He delivers live, always. So cool. Unfortunately Ian hasn’t always. Maybe he saved it for The Doors of the 21st century. Man that was a brilliant performance. Saw The Cult 6 or 7 times live. The songs are so great. Resurrection Joe, Love Removal Machine, Edie, Love Trooper and of course Spiritwalker etcetera etcetera.

"Edie, Ciao Baby", a song about Edie Sedgwick, Andy Warhol's muse, is awesome! The woman that inspired the song "Firewoman" to Ian Astbury, is featured in the video, portraying Edie Sedgwick. @@mckinnonkatz24 You are correct- I have owned every album since late 80s, seen them live, met Ian, and continue to love them. Dreamtime even has Native American images on the cover, and "Spiritwalker," one of my favorite songs of theirs, clearly from Native American philosophy. I even have Southern Death Cult album has a song "Apache" and references to desert flowers. I was convinced they were from the USA southwest for the first few years, I think.

@@jas137 Somebody from the actual US Southwest would've probably not disregarded actual individual Native Americans the way they did with the cover and videos from Ceremony. The Ceremony cover pic was used without the parents' or child's consent, and the burning of the child's image in the band's promotional videos had heavily negative religious connotations to that family. There was a lawsuit. The legal settlement seems to have had an NDA that prevents the band and the child's parents from discussing the outcome. Because of that, nobody knows whether the situation was remedied to the family's satisfaction.

Guns and Roses gets credit for bringing rock music out of the doldrums of the hair metal days but what folks don't realize is that it was actually The Cult. The Cult paved the road for GnR.
