When I was working my way through college I would drive myself crazy. I worked for $10.25/hr and every time I wanted to buy something I would do the math to figure out how long I worked for something. I'd be like, "Oh, that's a nice shirt. What??! $80! That's a full shift. I don't think so!"

+Heinocraft Honestly if I could do it all over again, I would get a good entry level job/traineeship with career progression as soon as possible (I went to university instead) and I would save as much as possible, like 90% savings rate, even staying with my parents if they let me. I would put my money into a high growth index fund, and by the time I was 30 I would be setup for life. You'll have so much options when you don't HAVE to work. But it's hard, most people in their twenties just want to party and travel.

When I was 20 I started my first major "Adult job" I was making about 55k a year "With tons of overtime of course" By the end of my first year of employment I had 12,000 saved without even trying very hard. I grew up in a lower middle class family, my family was the victim of the 02-06 factory to Mexico purge. Where my dad lost a great job and had to work his way back up at a local job where he still didn't make near the money he used to. lived in a modest apartment, didn't really spend money unless I really wanted to "Never did needed that safety net" I learned more from growing up with that lifestyle than anything, the worst influence is other people. My dad was letting me drive his truck, solid 2000 GMC sierra, well taken care of ran great "Still does". I paid him 2000 dollars cash for it, my insurance was only 185$ every six months on the truck. Fast forward to when me and my co-workers were talking about finances, I work in the trades and now I've learned how bad people in the trades are with money. They were straight up pretty much making fun of me for driving my old truck when I had "All that money in my bank account" Well I broke down from peer pressure they had me worried that my truck was going to break down on a long trip or something of that accord. I ended up getting a STEAL, the only good part of the bad situation I got in. I bought a 2015 Ram 1500 bighorn in 2016 for 26,000 dollars. Great deal considering the person that bought it in 2015 paid a whopping 34k for it. Sales tax paid "Not added in" I put 3 down on it sold the old truck back to my dad for 2000. My payment was 400 Dollars a month, but the kicker no one talks about if you have a vehicle that's not paid off it ups your insurance by like 50% My insurance went from 185 every six months to 195$ every single month. This also started a cascade effect with my spending. My account dropped as low as 5k before I concluded 'whoa i need to start saving again" Video's like these have helped me a lot, I only have like one and half years left paying on my truck, so I'll tough it out and drive it until it won't drive anymore. Don't let co-workers peer pressure you into buying things you don't need. These are the same people that "Fall on hard times" and need some money. It's crazy to me, but the average car payment where I work at is around 700$ a month, ridiculous and I always here the same thing Dave Ramsey made fun of once "I work hard I deserve a nice truck" Guys are going to work themselves into a early grave, the kind of work I do isn't meant to be done past your mid 40's I'm planning ways out now through savings and likely property investment.

Just discovered this channel about half an hour ago and really enjoying it - this video in particular drew my eye because I don't think I've ever seen someone ask this question before of any personal finance expert, which made for a really interesting watch. What I would say is that at various points in my life I've been in debt and at various other points in my life I've had good savings, and I've always found that it's a lot easier to spend money when you're already in some (not excessive) debt, because although rationally you know you should be trying to go in the other direction, psychologically it just feels like adding to a number, whereas when I have good savings I've found it much harder to spend any chunk of them because it translates into feeling like I'm spending months of savings effort as well as the money itself. So it's - weirdly - easier to spend money you don't have, because you never had it in the first place and therefore didn't put the effort in to build it up, than it is to spend savings, which you put a lot of effort in to build up. The fact that both traits can be in one person (and I don't think I'm unique in this) just shows you that not everyone is necessarily one "type" of person or the other i.e. spender or saver. A lot of it is about the circumstances you are in at the time.

I'm addicted to saving. I'm my own accountant and I walk around with a notebook everywhere I go. I try to count every dollar. Having a notebook has helped me reach my goals. I've been able to calculate my to do list (if I dont get it done one day I always go back and make sure it gets done), time management, money, weight loss, fast food addiction and grocery lists. It pushes me to become better. I still splurge but I do it in moderation. Of course, the first year wasn't easy but now it's just part of life. I'm on one important goal which is fast food addiction and I've been cooking a lot more now and loving it. If you don't prioritize your life who will.

See people get the idea of addiction wrong, that's not addiction. Addiction is an unhealthy obsession. In your case let's say you needed a medical procedure or surgery and you refused to get it because that would mean you would have to skip going to the gym or exercising while you're in the hospital for a couple of days recovering. That would be an addiction to exercising. Addiction to savings would be similar let's say you have a million dollars and you choose to not pay $200 for a tooth canal because you would rather save the $200 vs fix your health, that would be someone who is addicted to saving.

I'd suggest doing something physically-healthy, too: it costs more to try to recover health once you've lost it, so as I see it, you can either spend a little throughout your life to maintain proper fitness and health, or try to save up enough and maybe be able to get the best medicine too late to do any good to enjoy it.

What Dave did was fail to ask him his age. That speaks volumes about the person's situation. There's a big difference between having $200,000 at 25 and $200,000 at 60. The difference is with one, you can set yourself up to retire easily. While the other, you can't retire without Social Security and heavily lessening your expenses.

I disagree when Dave says you got the money in that Vanguard account to buy the car, he shouldn't cash part of the Vanguard account out to buy a car, he should just start fresh right now saving for a $7000 car. I drive a beat up car myself, and if I was gonna eventually buy a $7000 nice used car I would save my cash from my job to go and get one, I wouldn't cash out part of my investment to do so.

My grandfather was a hoarder in many ways. Especially when it came to money. I remember helping him go through his investments one time (I have a B Com in Accounting so I was in a position to help him to some degree). I discovered that he had put about $100,000 (Canadian) into a government of Canada investment that paid 0.4% interest. Now it was about a secure an investment that you could find but a similar type of government investment would have probably paid at least 1.5%. As he had grown up during the depression he liked essentially hoarding away the money he had saved up over the years even if the investment's he did put the money in were not the most productive uses of that investment capital. When he passed away in 2013 I was thankful that he did at least make sure that his family knew where he had invested all of his money and that his estate wasn't going to have to take potentially years to try and track down where he had hidden away his savings.

Saving too much is absolutely a thing. I am big worrier when it comes to finances and I am very good at talking myself out of spending. At a certain point it takes all the joy out of life. What I'm learning is that if you are content and have more money than you need, then give more and don't feel guilty when you want to buy yourself something nice every now and then.

Hmm 12 years owning his car and it is about dead I was wonder if he bought it used and it is way older than 12... my car hit 12 from new and it is still in awesome shape. Many of my friends drive around in cars with loans I try to avoid that life but I get it but it ain’t for me. Guess it depends how much you drive and how you treat it and other attributes. I agree spend a little but and get you something decent. Car provides him a way to drive to work so worth it.

I bought a new car once. When the payments were done, I kept making the car payment to my savings account. I drove the car for 10 years. When it had to be replaced, I had the money in the bank to pay cash for a certified pre-owned. I couldn’t bear to part with the cash though, so I financed. When that car had to be replaced, I wrote a check for a certified pre-owned.

When I was a kid I would save money to buy a new stereo or whatever. Saving money per paycheck to meet a savings goal. However, as I got close and had the money in my pocket I had had time to think of whether I wanted to spend that money at the end. I would think, "What's a way I can get that cheaper?" or "What's a way I can get somebody else to pay for it? (but not like taking advantage of a relative or friend)". You don't plan ahead for unpredictable events. But by the time I was getting to my savings goal, I would find out that that model goes on sale next month, or by that time I could find a used one at a fraction of the price.
