Am I CRAZY To DAILY DRIVE My Ferrari SF90 Stradale?

I'm daily driving my Ferrari SF90 Stradale, but is that a good idea?! It might sounds crazy but with over 4,000 miles in, let me tell you about the good and the bad, why I'm enjoying it so much and what problems I've had so far. Plus, there are some amazing cars to spot in London!
I picked up my SF90 in Italy and immediately embarked on a big tour with it all around Europe. However, in more recent times I've found myself literally driving it non-stop for daily driving and commuting purposes, and I absolutely love it. Ferrari created a supercar that's wonderful to drive on the road, boasts a tonne of different driving modes and settings to learn and become familiar with, and by having a range in eDrive it creates a great car to use for the city too.
After an update on the recent miles, including the previous tank clocking in at 26.5mpg, it's out to the countryside and then into London to car spot from a Ferrari! With a Bugatti Chiron stealing the show, there are endless luxury cars to see around the hot spots of the city. Where the SF90 Stradale is so fascinating is the clue from the name, "Stradale" meaning Road from Italian, and very much being a car engineered to be a great road car while happening to have 1,000hp too.
The crazy element of all of this... driving so many miles in a Ferrari is never quite so good for value, and arguably it takes away from some of the special-ness of the car being so familiar with it, but to be honest the smiles this brings outweigh any of that!
Thanks for watching, Tim

I'm genuinely glad you've come to the realization that driving these cars frequently is the key to understanding why manufacturers make them this way. I usually get frustrated when journalists sway people the wrong way after only experiencing a car for a few hours or days at most. Also that some owners jump into conclusions after driving a thousand miles

It’s when you come back to Tim’s videos you realise what a genuine petrolhead he is. With Tim you get a full run down on what the car is like to drive and live with, and a encyclopaedic knowledge of every car he passes - so different to a certain other blonde car KZfaqr who I shan’t name who pretty much only talks about the shape of the key fob. Thanks Tim.

Insane number of supercars - fantastic to look at, Tim, and great to see you have retained your schoolboy enthusiasm for them despite owning a good number yourself. I still have no idea how you can possibly know all of the models and their variants and so quickly. Sidebar: Amusing to see just how low down you sit in the SF90 compared to almost every other vehicle on the road, which for me, would be a little daunting. Another fab video.

Tim's is probably the best spec SF90 I've seen. Others have the colours & hood design etc that make them look more "race car" but that blue with silver wheels make it look elegant & suit the laid back style. Who would have thought any car with 1000hp could be "laid back" ?! But thats what it is...until it isnt !

Could the 'cold start' lurching issues at low speed be simply be down to the fact that the engine oil is not up to a more suitable running temperature? Don't know if its relevant but my 3 cylinder citigo sounds rough on a cold start until it gets up to temperature, after which it runs extremely smoothly. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Tim, my VW PHEV 2016 model also does the lurching forward on cold starts. So it's a common feature of Plug-In-Hybrids, it's not just on your SF90. But it's not scary and I already know when to expect it. The benefits of the Plug-In-Hybrid drive outweigh these small differences from an old-fashioned ICE car.

I was in my early teens when the first gen Honda NSX was released. And I remember how the motoring journalist criticised it for being so easy to drive, and for having good ergonomics, and doing everything so efficiently, whether that's pottering around town or doing high speed drives. Making statements like "why would I want a supercar that is as easy to drive as a Civic?". Citing it had no drama, as it did everything with minimal effort, or the NSX was clinical etc. Some even commenting these dramas are the reasons for driving a supercar. Now everyone praises how modern day supercars are so comfortable, and how easy they are to drive daily. So it was either brand snobbery, and/or the first gen Honda NSX was ahead of its time. As it seems it took some 20-30 years for the established supercar makers to catch up on the formula.

@EfficientRVer
@EfficientRVer 2 жыл бұрын
In my Prius Prime (PHEV) which I've driven 103K miles, I've learned that there are choices about how to do things, including choosing when to warm up the engine. My main rule is that I don't want to be stopped at a traffic light before the engine is done warming up, so I will usually drive in electric mode until I am at a place where I know that I can run the engine for the next few minutes without it idling at a stop. Also, of its available charge/discharge range 0-100%, the engine will only charge it via Charge Mode when it's below 80%. So, if I can run it down to 70% or lower, I can speed up the engine warmup on 35mph roads by going straight from EV Mode to Charge Mode, getting the engine load up to a reasonable level that driving slowly does not. This helps shorten the time that I'm vulnerable to unexpected stops in traffic with the engine stuck warming up, and at least recovers some of that into the battery when it does happen. The car will take care of itself and do something reasonable, regardless of what you do or don't do. But it's a fun game, as Schmee has found, to always be thinking of what the car is doing, and what you want it to do instead. Thinking ahead to the speed, traffic, terrain, and mission you're on, is not something the car does on its own. If you know you'll be driving around in the city, you want to arrive in the city with a full charge, but that's not a reason to avoid using EV mode on the way to the city, if you form a plan. In my Toyota, some of the things it does, at first seem to be poor choices, but over time almost every one of them has been proven to be good choices, sometimes even brilliant. Some very smart guys came up with the default-behavior algorithms. I have no idea if the same is true of the Ferrari. But by taking manual control of those decisions, you can overcome poor defaults for almost everything. But not the rule that once it starts warming up the combustion engine, it won't turn it off until the warmup is complete. It puts low emissions as a higher priority than low fuel consumption, though they correlate with each other reasonably well.
@johnchriskeen
@johnchriskeen 2 жыл бұрын
How do you manage the cold start though, what happens if you are on the motorway and it cold starts, surely that's not good for the engine as you'd want to warm it up first?

In my very little little little I totally understand your pleasure in having the possibility to switch between a comfortable cruiser and a sports car. I own a Golf 8 R that I use 200km daily and I love how I can cruise it like a diesel and when I want do a 0-60 in 4.5sec 😄

I would if I had one. Lucky enough to have driven one early this year, hands down the best super car on the market with very good tech and comfort
