My guess for the diabetic child story is that, being 5, she probably doesn't fully understand her own condition yet. She's too young to fully be trusted to know what she can and can't have, especially in the face of massive temptation and all the other kids enjoying it. Having all the kids delay one night and avoiding having their piles of sugary candy out and available is potentially for safety--instead of the parents having to watch like a hawk for any sharing or mix-ups, it's easier if everyone enjoys the sugar-free snacks, and the sugary candy is held until later. The compromise is that the diabetic girl is leaving her own trick or treat bag behind after the sleepover (since she can't eat it anyway), and thus all the remaining kids get a candy "bonus" for waiting one night. I totally get the idea, and don't know why the mom thinks the 5 year old should be in better control of her diabetes, while she thinks it's fine and worth indulging an 8 year old who will have a tantrum if she simply doesn't get her way immediately.
@we3345
@we3345 Жыл бұрын
I was thinking the same. Also diabetics can eat regular candy but only in very limetted amounts and I doubt a five year old would only eat like 2 pieces of candy while the other kids stuff their faces. And the wife does not even want to ask the children if they want the 'wait one night-get more candy' deal.

Yeah, also depending on the insulin dependence, we don't have enough information to know who is ill-informed about diabetes and if this is even a necessary concern.

Exactly, sounds like a great compromise - but as a diabetic, I would hate to be the diabetic kid who caused all the other kids to not get to eat candy.

@Subi agreed, it Would be entitled to force that on anybody. hence they asked both parents and the father wanted to ask the children. The mother didn't stand up for her children to not be forced to do something, but dragged her feet on the idea of her children being consulted on the matter.
@Ray_Vun
@Ray_Vun Жыл бұрын
not just her not fully understanding her condition, but the other kids might also not fully understand it. so even if the parents told her to not eat any of her candy, one of the other kids might give her some of their candy and she ends up eating it

I’m a cosplayer and a parent. People will force their babies on you regardless of what else you’re wearing or holding. My husband has stainless steel wolverine claws one Halloween - didn’t stop anyone. I like holding my own kids, but I don’t really want to hold strangers babies. But adults are just as bad - they also grab, take, and touch with zero consent. Some lady rubbed my fuzzy butt when I wore an Ewok costume one time and I’ve had stuff broken from folks grabbing. It’s ridiculous.
@HikariTheGardevoir
@HikariTheGardevoir Жыл бұрын
Honestly! Like, yes, I also feel the nearly uncontrollable desire to want to touch cool costumes or accessories while admiring them, but you know what I do? If I don't necessarily need to touch it to admire it, I just express my admiration for the costume and ask if I can have a closer look, and I keep my hands to myself. If I do want to touch it, I'll first start a conversation with the person, telling them how cool I think their costume is (I may not be into crafting costumes, but I am a crafter of other things, so I enjoy talking about the crafting process of literally ANY kind of thing with fellow crafters), and after talking with them about the crafting process for a while, I'll ask them if they mind if I touch a specific part of their costume. Guess what: a lot of people do not mind if you first show them that you view them as an individual deserving of respect and not just as a curiosity that can be touched without thinking. And usually me admiring a part of their costume will also result into more conversation about the crafting process because again, I love talking about crafting stuff, even if I don't craft that specific thing myself, because I love to learn how stuff works.

My niece is almost two and she definitely knows what candy is. LOL. She doesn't get it very often but if she overheard someone talking about it she would definitely ask for it. Also, sometimes picking up the child isn't because they aren't mobile. It's actually the opposite. If you don't carry them they run away or around and get into things.

Preschool teacher knowledge coming up: holding children who can walk is still relevant for comfort and relationship. Most children stop wanting to be held frequently around age 5-6 (and generally getting too big to actually pick up) but they may still want to sit on a parents lap for comfort occasionally till a bit older

It’s also just a good thing if a child gets super upset or needs to be comforted, being held up to someone’s shoulder is at the very least a hugely important piece of body language within our culture, and holding a child in that position affirms how much you care about them and want them to feel okay/loved. Frankly I’d say it never really stops being acceptable, it just transitions from a default to an action performed based on preference and ability. I would 100% pick up and hold my younger brother or girlfriend when they were having a hard time if they wanted me to and I was able to lift them, y’know?

On the topic of the juvenile diabetic AITA, I'm a juvenile diabetic and could maybe give some insight. "Replacement candy" in this case still has quite a bit of carb/sugar content and, more concerningly, a lot of that sugar free or low sugar candy has ingredients that actually cause diarrhea if you consume too much of it (google "sugar free gummy bear review" if you don't believe me). In my opinion, as someone who was diagnosed as diabetic when I was a toddler, I just sort of grew accustomed to the fact other kids would be able to consume a ton of sugary food when I couldn't--and while it was upsetting, I don't necessarily think it's "mean" for those kids to do so. However, I can also see the point the OP was trying to make in making sure the diabetic kid wasn't excluded. So I agree with what the consensus seemed to be on that post where nobody is really the asshole.

Fun story regarding holding babies and photos: When I visited India some years ago I had hot pink hair. In many places in the cities families would come up to me and hand me their infants then stand beside me and someone would take a family photo, with me very confused holding a stranger's child outside places like Hamuyun's tomb. I never understood why they wanted pictures with me, I imagine it's probably just because my hair was fun looking. It was surreal, and saying no did not work. Thr women were so eager and persistent in handing me their child I was just in shock haha. It was very weird feeling at the time, but it's fun to think that perhaps there's a family photo on a wall somewhere with me and my hot pink hair, making a face and holding someone's child.

@@hyperfisk Same thing happened to me and my brother in China. We were both very blonde back then, and my brother is also pretty tall, so people would take photos of us "in secret"... like, it was kinda creepy, people would just aim their cameras at us from a distance. But others would ask for a photo too, especially with my brother. I get why they did it because it's unusual to see blonde people but still, felt very weird.

I would equate it to, "I've only seen this on tv and I wanna take a picture to show the family and friends". If a community is small and homogenous, seeing things you only see on tv every so often it like a "woah!" moment. At least it was for me. I grew up in a small conservative community and the first time I traveled to a city and saw a woman with a lot of cleavage, I was shocked. I was like 12 at the time and had only seen such things on tv but of course I did not run to take a picture. haha. The culture shock is real.

I have very similar conditions to the 18 y/o and am similar in age, and I agree with Ben that going to the older brother’s spare bed is not a long term solution. I used to share my mother’s bed for similar reasons for a short period of time at the beginning of middle school when I did not know how to deal with my condition, but I would never wake someone up in the middle of the night unless absolutely necessary; I know how important a good night’s sleep is. In the long term, you really have to find your own coping mechanisms, because ultimately you are the only one who can work towards living a better life with your illness. I know from personal experience how distressing night terrors and nightmare disorders can be, but at younger brother’s age I think it would be good for him to be more self-sufficient. However I think the older brother is being a bit of an asshole. I’ve been told the same thing about movies (though I don’t self-sabotage and watch horrors), and it is completely not true. Those nightmares and night terrors in my experience strongly desensitize you to violence or horror. Older brother doesn’t know anything about what he’s in therapy for or the root cause, and I don’t think he should have any business telling his younger brother to stop watching certain movies. I think he should set boundaries, but I think it’s ridiculous for him to presume anything about the causes. For all he knows, younger brother could be struggling with something traumatic he wants to keep quiet, as that typically is the root cause of that combination and severity of his condition (though of course sometimes it just happens with no cause at all!).

I'm sort of the same way, I've had bad nightmares very often for all of my life. I think they would get worse if I watched lots of horror movies since I'm not used to them, but the argument is still irritating. I've been told so many times that I must be consuming some sort of scary media, but my mind's just like that 🤷‍♀️ It can turn literally anything into nightmares, or just replay old ones. I have developed a way to wake myself up - unfortunately for my husband it involves screaming. Luckily he falls back asleep easily.

I like how even SIL's husband was confused about why his wife was sneaking in OP and her husband's bedroom. Also, good question, wondering what SIL expected to find in there. Does she think the bedroom is changed every few weeks or something? I mean, she apparently snoops in there every time that she's over and then tries to lie about it. Or maybe she's hoping to catch the bedroom slightly messy(bed unmade or some pajamas on the floor) so she can gossip about how "unclean" OP and her husband's home is to her friends.

I never held a baby before I had my own. Honestly never wanted to hold babies. But I also wanted kids of my own. And they happen to be babies for a little while. I don't think it is unusual to not really want to touch other peoples' babies. :)

I think maybe that's because you know your own child, and you'd notice any discomfort, but with a stranger's baby (which is technically a stranger themselves I guess) you wouldn't know how to handle any strange reaction. Idk, I don't want kids myself, but the only kid I'm comfortable with is my nephew. I didn't even want to hold him as a baby though, because they seem so fragile at that age and I just don't wanna hurt them.

That story about the Rock cut out was hilarious. Also, as a parent of a kiddo with special needs, there are definitely a lot of pieces to the brother with nightmares story that we don’t have. But, I can also relate that sometimes I just need a break from the nightly wake ups. Whether right or not, I get frustrated and expect my kid to do whatever it takes so that he doesn’t need to wake me up. Meaning, whether the scary movies are the main cause or not, I find it a bit disrespectful and frustrating that the brother would watch them knowing that they could potentially trigger a nightmare.

The thing with the diabetic child is that I can understand swapping the regular candy with diabetic candy for the time that all the children are together, because you want to prevent the child in question accidentally eating the regular candy, so it's just an oversight thing. You do that with allergies, too (I expect at least). It would be a different story if the diabetic person was an adult at an adult get together, because an adult would know better what food to avoid.

the one about the baby is incredibly funny to me, only because i'm almost 24 and i ALSO don't like holding babies for the same reasons! when my oldest sister had her daughter a few years ago when i was 19, she gave me a really hard time over it and said "it's a baby, you've held babies before, just hold her." i'm usually someone who i don't mind holding babies when they can hold their head up on their own, like that's fine. but newborns? not so keen. i think it's really silly to try and *force* or *pressure* someone into holding your baby. and then making them feel guilty or villainous by ousting them from a family activity all bc they don't want to hold your baby? that's some extreme weirdo behavior in my opinion edit: Cristine's bundle is the best

I had a baby in 2021 and never asked if someone wanted to hold him. I think it is so weird that parents think others should love or enjoy their kids and push the kids on others. That person is the AH for making a big deal out of the 14 year old not holding the baby. I also agree with the take of not letting the kids have things like candy can create a bad relationship with the food. A good balance and moderation.

I don't know most of these candies, but most of the ones I know and like are on Cristine's team, so that's my pick. Listening to Ben and Cristine talk about kids was such a joy - it made me feel less alone seeing people my age having similar opinions and level of knowledge about kids, lol. But the baby holding thing unlocked some memories... So I'm the "weirdo" in my family who has since forever been saying that I don't like or want children, and I thought that's just that. Turns out my family thinks of me as some sort of monster out to harm their children or something? One time I heard my little niece crawling and making noises outside of my room so I peeked outside to see what's up, since I haven't heard any other adults around her. So I just stood there, half behind my door, looking at her, not engaging in any way (I may not be interested in children, but it's not like I want anything to happen to them). Suddenly my father and sister run from the other room, yelling at me "What are you doing to her!? Leave her alone!!". Wtf. Then few years later I was at my aunt's and her little grandson was visiting. He was sitting between me and my aunt on the couch and then he started standing up (he was still learning to do that) and grabbed my shoulder for support. Normally I'd ignore, but I tried to be less socially awkward since a bunch of family was there, so I just looked at him, but at the very same time my aunt grabbed him and literally flung him on her lap saying: "Come here or your aunt (me) will get pissed!". Seriously, wtf. I told her loudly and clearly that just because I don't like children doesn't mean I'll harm them. Funny how people will throw their kids at anyone, but the ones who aren't interested at all will somehow give them the red flags...
