Exactly...it's like he desperately wants to hate Mozart because he's such a petulant child, but Salieri's true passion is music, and he can't dent how incredible Mozart is with it. He's at once unbelievably jealous and in awe. Incredible acting on both parts, but especially Salieri's...particularly the subtle expressions of emotion as he reads through his music and tells the priest about it.

Tom Hulce gives an obnoxious one-note performance. I have no idea what people see in him. Abraham, on the other hand, is fantastic.

OH, YES! He's wildly pumping his fists and grinning ear to ear during "The Abduction from the Seraglio"! And the way he's meeting lustful eyes with Caterina Cavalieri during it... And then compare his emotional pain with his emotional AND physical pain when conducting "Die Zauberflöte," where he collapses and is carried to his deathbed.

It's really much more than that...read up about his childhood and teen years, where he was giving concerts all over Europe for the wealthy and royalty. Enough to make one either dedicate their lives to music, or give up altogether ;)

Agreed, and it actually does work in a historical context better than its critics admit. That Salieri at least once claimed that he killed Mozart is as far as I can find accepted. I see this movie as a dramatization of his delusions on the subject.

Well, it really is filled with so many inaccuracies in order to entertain. Nearly all great composers of previous ages had fascinating lives, filled with enough intrigue, humor and passion without the need for total fabrication. Like Immortal Beloved or Impromptu. Hollywood manages to trivialize, sexualize and dumb down most histories. I loved Amadeus as a young man, but thankfully I understand the differences between total entertainment and history. Many walked away from the play and the film mis-informed. Entertained, but sadly mis-informed on Mozart, Salieri, Vienna and the entire true and fascinating stories of these people and this era.

Mozart was also the reason I started enjoying opera, but it started with Magic Flute for me. :)

Grew up in a classical music loving household but opera had always been a bridge too far for me - until this movie. Specifically the Don Giovanni scene was my awakening, that one left such a deep impression on little me. So much love for this movie

This scene, the vocals were Irish coloratura soprano Suzanne Murphy. The Queen of the Night scene later in the film was sung by American coloratura soprano June Anderson.
