Brought back memories and in my opinion, mom and pop stores or manapua trucks were the best spots for musubi. Mahalo!

Did you know there are two kinds of Manapua type buns? One enclosed at the top? & one enclosed at the bottom? (I tend to like the one enclosed on the bottom cuz it’s lesser dough to chew thru; & cuz they’re usually more airy & pairs better to me with char su Pork) 7-11 was the original commercial one that used to be enclosed at the bottom. But? My recent trip? They changed to enclosed at top? Siao Pio I think is the name type? And they were big buns at 7-11 where I used to work at, yet airy dough means less heavy on your tummy. (7-11 ones used to be color coated buns to let customers know what type you were getting. Red colored bun, char su, Yellow colored bun for Curry, purple for sweet tarro paste) And Hawaiian businesses do have the “bottom type” to order online with Portuguese Sausage & Zippys frozen chili meals (it costs more to send to the mainland fyi) lol…. I used to get two spam musabi, one teriyaki chicken musabi, & one or two manapua char su pork bun when I got off work to snack on at home lol….

I grew up on Spam, but never had a Musubi until about 6 or 7 years ago when a co-worker made them for a potluck, so good. My favorite way to eat Spam is cutup, fried and cooked into scrambled eggs, yum! As I've gotten older I have to say I do like the Lite Spam (NOT less sodium) whenever I can get it.

I concur with the timing of the "invention" of the spam musubi attributed to Kauai in the mid-1980's. I am an oldie- 1985 Oahu HS grad. Never came across a spam musubi- 7-11 or potluck, etc till the 2nd half of the 80's. I would say became a common staple all over the place by the early 90's. When I grew up, spam was fried (no teri sauce) and just another breakfast meat choice.along with vienna sausage, Portuguese sausage, and bacon.

I prefer Iyasume because their Spam/Rice ratio is close to what I grew up on and what I make at home: 1" of rice with Spam thickness of 7 slices per can; Spam slices sauteed in a fry pan with a little shoyu; nori width about 1/2 the length of the Spam.

I remember learning to make Spam musubi in the early 1990s when I worked at Salt Lake Elementary School and we sold them for $1 for fundraising at a school fair. At first we were cutting 7 slices of Spam per can, but then someone said to make it 9 slices so we could make more musubi (and money). (I hear the cheap places with thin pieces of Spam actually cut 11 slices per can!) We lightly pan-fried the Spam in teriyaki sauce and molded the lightly salted rice by hand and then wrapped it around the center with a single piece of nori that was cut from a larger sheet. So much labor, but so 'ono! And still easier and less expensive than making makizushi or inari (cone) zushi which were commonly sold. We sold about 100 in less than an hour. When the plastic molds became available at Daiei (now Don Quijote), my mom bought some so we could make it at home. The double (or longer) molds make things go so much faster. My friends from Japan first tasted Spam musubi in Hawai'i, and they bought molds and cans of SPAM to take back so they could make it themselves, so I know it's a Hawai'i creation!

Love spam musubi but it's hard to beat the ones made with love at home. My kids grew up on my version...bottom layer rice, chopped takuan next layer, another thin layer of rice, furikake, then spam that was marinated in yoshida's bbq sauce, followed with a full nori wrap. Now I want a spam musubi!

Aloha, Amanda & Felix...I would love to see more episodes (parts 2, 3 etc.) to this video in regard to SPAM MUSUBI. So many places that make some great Spam Musubi. KAMAMALU soooo ono. My go to place lately has been KOMEDOKORO M's in Waikiki (Eaton square). They definitely would rank up there in the best rice category. Super super fresh and they sell out every day, you have to go early. Taniokas has a good one too. Never heard of Gotz Grindz. Would like to see that place in a follow-up. When I go to 7-11 been getting the Spam Katsu Musubi lately. Iyasume - love the takuwan radish - spam musubi (nice crunch) but find them on the smaller size musubi's. You both did a great job on this one. Awesome, love this content. THANK YOU!

I used to teach ukulele to kids at elementary schools, and got "tricked" into starting a musubi stand/tent at a local Hulu/Poly/Hawaiian Festival here in Los Angeles. ended up doing it for several years as a hobby business. I was lamenting that musubi was so hard to find at the festival! one vendor had it way bottom of list of mainly plate lunch like an afterthought. I know, right‽‽‽ The director of the ukulele for kids program used his mental/Kumu powers and made it seem like it would be easy to do... it wasn't, but lots of good memories. Flattop/griddle grilled with teri charred into the spam was the only way we cooked the spam . has to be that way IMO. we had spam sandwiched between furikake mix rice and full nori wrapped we called OnoKine and a teri charred spam on diabetes-size block plain rice and nori strip we called Traditional Kine... that's all we sold for the first couple years... it got super popular at the festival and the newly formed 626 Night Market we also tried. LA didn't know/understand the beauty of spam and rice when we started... but I'm pretty sure we converted a lot of people. good times...

Definitely need part 2 & 3 because there are so many places that offer spam musubi. For me my go to is Mana Musubi on S King street. The original name used to be Manabu Musubi but it got sold and became Mana Musubi. Loved their rice though the spam choices are regular spam or teriyaki spam. My other go to is at the Waikele golf course. Their musubi is a good portion and they mixed furikaki with rice and pickled daikon. Power up before your golf game… so good. Though am not sure if they still offer it after pandemic. 🌺🌺🌺

I do love the best of series. Would love for you guys to do a Cold Ginger Chicken one. Growing up On On Chinese was my go to spot, but then it changed and hasn't been the same. I've tried several other places when I've been back home, like Asian Mix, but they all are lacking something or have some odd kind of after taste. Was hoping Eater would do a series on it like they did for Roast Duck etc, but I haven't seen one yet.

Hi Amanda and Felix. I don’t know how many spam musubi I have made in my lifetime. 🥹I make a Teri sauce and cook the spam in it. I actually place half of the rice in the mold then the spam and the rest of the rice. So the spam is in the center. There are so many different types of spam musubi. I am loving the unagi. Thank you 13:47 for the video. Gotz Grindz is in my neighborhood. Love and blessings❤️🙏😊

My favorite is the 7-11 spam katsu musubi. I think they are the only ones who sell it that way. As for spam thickness, most probably use the spam cutter for consistency.

Hmmm... did not get my notification for this video. Still subscribed too!. WTH??? I'm an all over nori gal with the spam in between 2 layers of rice - that way the spam to rice ratio is better. IMO. Also, controversial, I do not like 7-11's...way too much rice...I'll just make my own. Lol
