As you pointed out, Ice Man is not a bully. All of the advice Ice Man gives Maverick was good advice that by the end of the movie Maverick embraces to some degree. I really hope you watch the sequel Top Gun Maverick because I think you will enjoy it as well.

Fun little FYI: Iceman is the callsign taken from Navel flight (F-16) surgeon, Deniz Tek; Tek served with the Marine Corps. When the production crew for Top Gun was at the actual school to see how things were run, they meet him and liked his call sign. That’s a long story made very short. Anyway, prior to the Navy Tek was lead singer in a punk band called, Radio Birdman. “Aloha, Steve and Danno” is their best song. It’s on KZfaq and really good. When you hear it, you’ll hear the real Iceman singing.

"Why did this Happen?"..... A design flaw in the early Tomcats, if you were in a "Flat-Spin" the canopy would not move out of the way of the ejection seat, and the two would collide..... they changed/corrected this in later versions.....

The incident that led to Goose's death is called a flat spin, which means there is no airflow over the wings, so you don't have any lift and there is no airflow over the control surfaces, so you can't maneuver the plane. Because they lost both engines, they couldn't try to create any airflow over the control surfaces by gunning the engines. IOW, the plane was a rock.

It certainly is “one of the movies” of all time.

I’ve been a pilot for thirty years, seven of which were in the military. The character “Maverick” was reckless and “Ice Man”, along with the other pilots, was right to call him out for his reckless behavior. I’ve lost too many friends to aviation accidents over the past thirty years. Every time I lose a friend to an aviation accident, I don’t let it affect me doing my job. You can’t let your emotions affect your job performance.

I was very skeptical when they made a sequel to this movie, because I really liked this one as a kid in the 80’s. But I have to say I actually like the sequel better than the original. You should definitely give it a watch!

25:05 The story of Pete’s father’s death. He was a fighter pilot, in the middle of a huge dogfight. He saved 3 other planes before he was shot down by enemy planes. The Government could’t tell the truth about the incident because the entire fighter plane battle was “illegal”.

“There’s a new version of this movie? I wonder if it’s any good?” Most people consider the sequel (which came out a year and a half ago) as far superior. It also made sure to put all the actors into the actual fighter jets and film them up in the sky. You should really check it out. It grossed over a billion dollars.

Yes, little kids did watch this movie and they did want to become fighter pilots. The recruitment went up over 400% that year because of this movie.

This is an iconic and great movie Amanda!! But the sequel, Top Gun: Maverick, it´s a truly MASTERPIECE.

The first time a movie ever made me cry as a kid when Goose dies...I even went as Maverick for Halloween. Lets see if she notices Andy Dufresne before he went to Shawshank. 👀

So back in the 80's and early 90's when big home stereos and surround sound systems became normal in homes across the U.S. This movie was usually what people would put on showcase the system. The sounds of the jets and the rockin' tunes always put smiles on everyones faces.

Im a Navy brat, meaning when I was born my father was in the Navy. In fact I was born on a Marine Corp Air Base. The Navy and Marines are related. We lived on Kaneohe Marine Corp Air Base in Hawaii when this movie came out. Of course all my friends from school out in town wanted to come over to the base and watch the jets fly around. Also, the base had a really good beach for surfing. My dad was home every night , except once in while he would go "on float" (out to sea) for 6 months with West-Pac Fleet. But I had some friends who's dads were Navy Seals and they had no idea where their dad was. The military doesnt tell the families that their husband/father is jumping from a perfectly good plane tonight over Somalia to rescue hostages from pirates. We never know about that stuff. The Sequel (Top Gun: Maverick) is just as good as this one! And it brings back Maverick AND Iceman!

FWIW, the “enemy” was the USSR. MIGs were their planes. When the movie was released, the “Cold War” had been running for decades, USSR was getting poorer, the USA economy was booming and they were feeling a little bit Pete Maverick Mitchell. This movie captured the popular spirit of the age.

The two combat scenes in Top Gun were loosely based on a pair of incidents between the US Navy and Libyan Air Force over a body of water called the Gulf of Sidra. Libya claimed it as a territorial bay, but the US (and rest of the world) considered it international waters. Several Libyan jets were shot down. This all took place in the 1980s, both prior to and after Top Gun was made.

The Mig was a Soviet Air Craft. We called it The Fox Bat. The Mig, Enemy Air Craft were most likely Soviet although they were also marketed to Iran and Poland and East Germany.

I'm from 1986, and the funny thing is that I did not knew it. A friend told me to watch it in 1999 or 2000. But I already knew how to fly a Cat', anything... The guy had a good feel, like : You'gonna love this... And it was awesome... Next was Maverick. And same thing. Even better.

Cold War era movie MIGS are planes that were produced by the Soviet Union & the Soviet block & exported to their allies in places like Libya & Iraq Etc

There is no specific geopolitical scenario that this movie would relate to, however very close in time to this movie was the Gulf of Sidra incident which saw Libya attempt to extend its exclusive zone of control over the entire Gulf of Sidra, which was not recognized by international law. The U.S. Navy has a a doctrine that requires it to challenge any attempt by any country to extend its control over oceans that are in contravention of what are generally considered to be freedom of the open sea, which considers only the seas which within 12 nautical miles of the coast of any country.

Its not a new version. Its a sequel. Its at least a "good" as this one.

When the film came out I got my mom the buy me the soundtrack, I had the actual record, which was cool because the album jacket is so large compared to a cd case, that you can actually read and see everything easily. 80;s was best era of Movies & Music

The earliest F14 had engines that were prone to compressor stalls. Once an engine stalled you would not only have a massive loss of thrust but also an increase in drag on one side, resulting in yaw. If that yaw went far enough it would lead to the trailing wing losing air flow and stalling, or if went quickly enough for both everything to stall. Flat spins were an issue for the F14, but they would tend to result in the plane falling out if the sky, rather than spinning out to sea like a frisbee. An ejection incident similar to the one in the film did happen early in the service life of the F14. So, by the time of the film the ejection system and procedures had been adapted to create more separation from the canopy. The fighter jets of this era were still difficult to just fly let alone fight in or land on a ship at sea. When the commander says, "there will be others." I interpret as him saying, "Goose won't be the only person you see die. You need to be able to deal with that."

Great reaction just wish a couple scenes were included to tie the story together where they get radar lock on after he abandons his wingman to go after viper & when Hollywood gets shot down at the beginning of the ending fight

Not sure if it's been answered, but the time this film takes place in is in the 80s, at the last leg of the Cold War (incidentally, this film released less than a month after the Chernobyl disaster). It's implied (though not stated outright) that the enemies in the opening and in the final dogfight of the film (based on the enemy fighters being called MiGs) are in some way affiliated with the former Soviet Union. Obviously, there was never a real MiG-28, nor could any actual MiGs be used since the US and the Soviet Union were still adversaries at the time, so the American-made Northrop F-5 was used as a stand-in for the "MiG-28". US Navy recruitment skyrocketed after this film released.

Fighter pilots are incredibly arrogant. I worked at a pilot training base for 22 years. There were accidents. We lost one student pilot on his first solo ;-(

It's A Cold War movie so it's the US vs the Soviets or Soviet client states. The fight is based off the US vs Libya. US were patrolling the area & they engaged the American planes & paid the consequences

He is a pilot in the Navy she is a civilian contractor there are no rules stopping them from dating. And the flat spin was caused by the first generation engines late the navy was able to correct the problem with the second generation engines.

7:38 Maverick’s superior Stinger is correct he did something very brave in disobeying orders. That is the only reason why Stinger isnt’ getting Maverick drummed out of the Navy. He risked his life to save another flight crew. That is the only thing that saved him despite his considerable talents. That fighter plane is the property of the US Navy and therefore the people of the United States. At the time of this film that F-14 was about $30 million per plane.

They are inexplicably sweaty on the inside of a navy ship… those spaces are kept pretty cool with chill water air for all the computer equipment that’s in there. When they made the movie, they must’ve been thinking of a submarine. Those are cramped really tight spaces to get hot and sweaty.

Legal Eagle made a video going over this film and said in real life, Maverick a) would not have a callsign as awesome as "Maverick" (callsigns are usually based on some embarrassing story from bootcamp and are unique to navy aviators) and b) would have so many charges of conduct unbecoming an officer or gentleman, reckless operation of aircraft, reckless endangerment of personnel, etc... that he would either be dishonorably discharged from the US Military or imprisoned.

Top Gun Maverick needs to be watched. With Charlie - the navy caused a little change because of the fraternisation as you saw it. The part where they said she was a civilian contractor and do not need to salute her - this was included as there would have been an issue had she been in the navy, but as she wasn't there was no problem with the romance from their point of view.

Dating/marriage is allowed in the military if the enlisted are of equal rank, one is a govt. contractor, etc. (like Charlie in this movie), or they are married prior to enlisting. Some of this applies to officers only. (Just keeping it simple. There may be other guidelines). Yes, Top Gun: Maverick is a very good movie. It's a great watch.

In case you were not understanding all the flight stuff was them practicing with their own buddies until the very end of the movie when they actually went on a real mission.

I've always loved Maverick's bullshit about, "We were only below 10,000 for a few seconds." Well the problem is the limit for the exercise was 10,000 ft. That means that line was ground-level in theory. So he flew into the ground for a few seconds, it's fine there's no risk! It's pure nonsense. XD

Top Gun: Marick is an excellent movie, even better than the original in my opinion. You should watch it. It would make an excellent review.

During this time in the 80s....actually from the late 40s thru the early 90s ... We were in what was called "the cold war". A lot of tension between the USSR and the 🇺🇸. There has been quite a few times that tension have ran high between socialist countries and 🇺🇸.

Great reaction to a very good movie, and the sequel is even better. As I remember, the romance wasn't an original part of the movie, but they thought that it would test better with women if they included a love story, so it got added in. I loved the flying parts of the movie but the romance felt tacked on so I was unimpressed with it. It's a good movie, and a good story, but it wasn't anything I was overly impressed with at the time. The sequel, however, is much much better. Val Kilmer created a lot of the Iceman character. I liked that, while Ice was the better technical pilot, he was predictable since he was very rule conscious. Val played him as being kinda socially awkward, which is why he got tagged with the Iceman name since he was fairly standoffish to most people. It really showed when, after Goose's death, it looked like Ice was really struggling to find words to reassure Maverick with because he just wasn't very good at expressing himself. It would have been easy to make Ice just a jerk, but Kilmer made him sympathetic and likeable in spite of his difficulties communicating.

Supposed to be the Soviet Union. Cold War was still in full swing when it was released. Goose goes on to be a doc in the TV series ER. Nice Shawshank catch.

Great reaction. It has to be hard not understanding the military lingo they are using. I would suggest looking up the stuff you didn't know and re-watching. It makes it better. Also i think you are underestimating what she meant to Maverick. Her confronting Maverick after Gooses death, who is Mavericks only family left in the world, helped push him to to reconsider giving up. Gooses wife said it best. Maverick is in love with her. If he didn't love her he doesn't listen to her and leaves the school. His grief over losing the last person on this earth, Goose, would be to much. But luckily Maverick falls in love with that girl. So it was an essential part of the story. It is part of his character growth that you liked so much.

@03:00 No one really. The 80's are the age of President Ronald Regan. The Vietnam war was over, and the first Iraq war wouldn't be until the 90's. Instead we mostly got regime changes and proxy conflicts. The US got dragged into a multilateral mission against Hezbollah in Lebanon. Then there was the arming of contras in Honduras, Nicaragua, and Afghanistan. When this movie came out was the same year they invaded Grenada to arrest their government. They also bombed Gadafi's Libya and influenced a civil war in Chad (arguably to help keep the Libya from normalizing relations with their neighbor). They sunk a bunch of Iranian ships on purpose, and one Iranian airliner by accident. Then they invaded Panama for another regime change... and that more or less brings us to the 90's.

Now you need to watch the sequel since it is that much better. It is actually my 2nd favorite movie of all time.
