This was a really great video Amanda! I loved being able to feel like I was hiking that trail right along side you. And the camera work is outstanding - I just watched on my laptop, and I think I'm going to go watch again on my big TV. I can't believe you climbed that boulder field in your minimalist sandals!

Hi Amanda! The bird up in the snow was either a Gray-crowned Rosy-Finch or a Black Rosy-Finch. They both could be in the alpine regions of Utah. Thanks for taking us along!

Just got back and wish I had watched this before going! I got lucky, though and was able to talk to two different experienced hikers who both told me “definitely take the shortcut!”. One of them advised staying low under the boulder field after the initial scramble. Turned out to be relatively easy and still cut a lot of distance. Awesome video! I love how you show the reality that it is a tough hike both up and down.

I did Kings a couple weeks ago. I took the same route as you. The scramble in the beginning of the shortcut isn't hard. Worth the effort for fewer miles. Once I got to the big cairn, I cut across the valley to Anderson's Pass to avoid walking the boulder field around the rim, which would've taken me longer. I however got caught in a big thunderstorm right at the pass with 30+ mph winds and pelting hail.

I went on that trip about 47 years ago. It was so fun!! But the thing we did differently is go by horseback. You can actually hike up and back same day on horseback. When I went it wasn’t very populated and we only passed one hiker the entire day. You are right, the animals are abundant and the mountains are so beautiful!! Well, everything is. And the fishing was amazing way back then. We would catch a fish on every throw. Thank you for sharing your adventure with us!!

My first trip to Kings was when I was 16, in the 1970's. My last trip to the top was 6-7 years ago. I'm solidly in my sixties now and may not make it back but I've got a trip planned into one of the surrounding basins next month. Your experience was so true to mine. I've been chased off that rascal more than once by rain and thunder. Many thanks for sharing. So beautiful, so many great memories.

My favorite basin in the Uintas! Congratulations on summiting, done it twice and we were up there the 1st week of August for another summit attempt, and were rained on for 2 days straight, a little food poisoning and elevation sickness for another member in our group kept us from going past Gunsight pass. It was still a wonderful outing. So jealous you saw a Moose, I think the rain kept all the wildlife away when we were there haha.

Yea the weather in the Uintas is so wild and unpredictable. I agree the basin is incredible though. I was telling Nick that I would go back just to be in the basin and explore more of that area. It's just so beautiful!

This is such an incredible place! I did this about 25 years ago and my group and I were struck by lightning at the pass as we were headed down from the summit. One of the most formative events of my life to say the least. We should have summited sooner. Those afternoon storms are serious for sure! It's such a beautiful mountain range and so sad what the Beatles have done to the trees, I'll still keep going back though. Great video!

Well done! Beautiful vistas and wildlife! My friends and I just did a similar type of hike in Colorado as far as mileage. We began down in Manitou Springs and over the course of three days, did approximately 25 miles to summit Pikes Peak at around 14,100. We hiked in 6 miles and stayed at a place called Barr Camp. Then summited the following day doing 6 miles up and back down to our camp. Then we hiked out the third day. I guess we did approximately 7500' elevation gain to get to the summit. It was my first 14er. I hope to do Kings Peak at some point. The Utah Highline Trail is on my bucket list.

It's so hard to decide! I think Nicks favorite is the Beef Stroganoff and I'm going to go with the classic Beef Pasta Marinara. There's just something about pasta after a big hike that hits the spot!

I'm not long back from a 7 day remote first aid/preparedness training course and freeze-dried packet foods and snacks were really fundamental in getting fuel into my system to remain energised and alert to continue to be able to function properly and effectively take in the info and training. I love cooking good food outdoors but sometimes we just need to get the calories, carbs and protein in to continue functioning/achieving our goals. Nice vid, all the best, Andy. p.s. I've just started doing yoga and stretching for my physical wellbeing and it's really helping x

Yea the whole hike was mentally draining, so it was nice not to think too much about the meals and the ones we packed were so delicious. They really hit the spot! So happy to hear that yoga and stretching has been helping. I did just a little stretching down by the lake after the peak day and I felt so much better. Thanks for commenting!

Taking that shorter way has a huge boulder field before Anderson Pass. It is fun but the walking is slow. I prefer that way but the longer trail is a good choice if you don't want to deal with the long boulder field.

When I did this hike, we went right at that saddle and regretted it! Glad you went around the long way! Great video!

Yea I've heard a few people say that about the shorter route. The long way was actually a really nice trail so it worked out great! We were going to take the short way back just to see what it was like, but at that point it was raining and we didn't want to hike a steep rocky trail in the rain, so we ended up taking the long way back too. Overall, it was a solid day on the mountains!! Thanks for commenting! 😁

Always love watching your adventures ! New Hampshire girl here and I was shocked to see a moose 🫎… I just don’t think moose when I picture Utah in my head because I went to the mighty five and played all around down there . I simply didn’t know Utah had moose ha ha ha ha Now I want to do this hike … put it on the list ( I have a LONG list ) ha ha ha Visit New Englands White Mountains sometime ! You’d love it !

I have a long list too!! haha That's one reason I love living in Utah - we have both deserts and mountains. It's such a cool state. I lived in New Hampshire for a bit when I was attending Dartmouth. It is such a beautiful area! I grew up in CT but I don't make it back there very often, although, there's nothing like a New England fall!! 🍁 Thank you for commenting! So glad you enjoyed this one.

I would love to hear your advice on hiking higher elevations. I did the paintbrush cascade canyon loop in GTNP, and tapped out once I hit over 10k ft. I struggled so much with breathing and was starting to feel some sickness.

We just got back from a 3-day camping trip. On day 2 we had horrible storms. The rain was so crazy and the lighting and thunder were so loud.

Summit ✔️ Rain and lightning ✔️ Moose✔️ Very similar to my experience there, though the right turn saves a lot of time compared to the longer valley route. This really brings back such great memories!

Fellow Utahn here. I loved this video. I've been doing a lot of hiking this year and I'm going on my first overnight backpacking trip soon. It will be my testing ground for deciding if I want to do future overnight hiking trips. Kings Peak is on my list too, but only if I feel confident in staying overnight. Amanda how much does your loaded backpack weigh? That's one of my biggest concerns is carrying that load. I can handle the distance and elevation, but worry about the additional stress of a full pack.

@AmandaOutside - I love all your content, & really enjoy watching these where you & Nick do big hikes (& the dialogue between you after). This may seem like a ridiculous question, but you cover all the hardcore/legit content in your videos so...how does your hair always look so smooth and not greasy when you do these strenuous activities?! I always have a million fly-aways and end up not liking many of my summit pictures because I look like a madwoman. Obviously hat/scarf is one option, just curious if there's anything in particular you recommend for these multiday camping/hiking trips. Also I've seen in other hiking videos people whip out umbrellas as well, is this a new trend?! I'd think the extra weight would be a downer if you already have a jacket, curious on any feedback. Minute ~20:35ish...lol. Looking forward to the next videos!

For the boulder field, were there any trail markings? Or just kinda point yourself upwards and find the best route? How long to go up vs coming back down? Loose rock or pretty secure for rock hopping?

I really enjoy your videos, thank you! In this video I reacted to the big amount of dead trees in the background, by the lake and at other places. Do you know why all the trees where dead? In Sweden we have problems with the spruce bark beetle killing a lot of spruce trees.

Hi Amanda! Smart move, the umbrella. I couldn't help but notice that you hiked all the way on your slippers/sandals. Isn't that dangerous or are those special hiking ones? My biggest issue while hiking is getting extremely painful feet due to the swelling of my feet, whether if it's heat or just the duration of the hike. I have been thinking about outdoor sandals, too, but I'm not sure if they work on rocky and uneven paths. I can see that it works for you, so do you have any advice for me about footwear? Thanks in advance and loved watching you guys! It's indeed like I'm there experiencing with you so thanks a lot! 🥰

It's not abnormal to see snow in August in Utah, I've lived here most my whole life, it can be very normal. You should be wearing hiking boots or shoes for this. As close to God as you'll get. That's Utah weather, wait 5 min, it'll change.
