The difference is, at some point in history we were forced to have English names, they were forcefully imposed on us otherwise you wouldn't be registered in school. We didn't go out of our way seeking English names and we were not proud to bear those names hence we called them school names coz we only used them at school. Our names have meanings and in some cases one word can have different meanings depending on how you pronounce it, so it is a big deal.

Honestly, I don't mind... So long as she knows what it means and appreciates its (name) beauty. We South Africans are so blessed that we can utter so many sounds that others struggle with. Hell, even most white, coloured & Indian South Africans can't pronounce our sounds (honestly, a choice at this point) and we interact with them daily!

Am more surprised that it's even on KZfaq 🤣 am South African and Xhosa and even here pple of some tribes can't pronounce some of the clicks in my language but it doesn't offend me coz I know their tongues can't click becoz their languages don't click. Therefore I don't crucify some1 for not being able to pronounce click words especially non South Africans🤧 if it was a simple word like Thando, then I would be on the fence

People need to take a chill pill. When we speak in a language, we cater any foreign words and names to the pronunciation of that language. People do it naturally and automatically. I'm Chinese-American and when I insert English words into my Chinese, I do so with a Chinese accent. When I say Chinese names in English, I use an American accent. It's what most people naturally do. I'm also fluent in French and when I order a croissant at an American pastry shop, I don't pronounce the pastry with a French accent. Nor do most French people I know. At all the schools I've attended, which have like 50+% Asians and Mexicans, people Americanize the pronunciation of their names all the time. It's literally to make the language flow as one. I do sometimes switch between languages in their native forms, and you know what happens? I pause, and flow doesn't happen.

Amandla doesn’t owe anyone the so-called correct pronunciation of her name. It’s literally hers to pronounce however she deems fit. It’s very self-righteous to think you have authority over how someone chooses to pronounce their own name.

South Africans are pedantic about other people pronouncing their names incorrectly, when most of the population can’t pronounce Venda and Tsonga names. Plus the non-nguni also struggle with Nguni names, and vice versa. Let’s cut each other some slack, we have bigger problems to worry about.

It's a bit silly to think that people from other nationalites should be able to pronounce your language. Even more so when it's not well known worldwide. It doesn't mean you don't accept your heritage

I dont like when parents do that this is why so many of our cultures died. Because we want to fit in and we're shamed onto thinking our way of life was backwards. Parents teach your child your native tongue first and then English. I find it so cool too see kids/adults interchange languages. Just because you date outside your raelce doesn't mean you should lose your culture
