As you might know, Amandla means "Power" in IsiZulu and Xhosa from South Africa. During Apartheid, protesters would raise their fists and chant "Amandla awethu", meaning "Our Power". It seems Amandla is a natural and her name totally reflects what kind of a person she is. A powerful and fearless woman.

@Jonas Pell who the fuck do you think you are calling my girl a hoe? and you only listed three things that you white people have done half-independently whereas my race (black people) have done and discovered many things that the world still uses to this day whilst you whites take the credit for it.

People need to stop being so hard on her because she's light-skinned. It's not like they picked a light skin girl that was raised in the suburbs that knows nothing about Hood life this girl was raised in the ghetto and she has experienced what she is portraying in the movie. There are even white people that live in the hood so I don't think it really has anything to do with race or skin color as long as she proves a point in the movie I feel that's all that should matter

I think people are being quite unfair to Amandla. I get that it is super important for darker skinned actresses to be cast in more roles, but what is Amandla supposed to do, not act at all? She's already turned down an opportunity!
@somayab3380
@somayab3380 5 жыл бұрын
Aishling Ní Faoláin she gets acting but in this it is especially important because Starr is dark skinned it is better to honor an upcomi g dark skinned artists that way
@carmelaelizabeth3431
@carmelaelizabeth3431 5 жыл бұрын
Aishling Ní Faoláin i think they picked her because she doesn't need to act she just has to relive her life. She's been through it and will be able to channel the character Starr better than someone who doesn't have the experience
@najmaameen9886
@najmaameen9886 5 жыл бұрын
How are we being unfair? She preaches for this type of thing and acts like she's "woke," but when it comes down to it, she takes the opportunity for a dark skimned actress to play Starr away from a darkskinned character. I'm not black, i'm brown, but i can completely understand the backlash due to the high amount of colorism in the brown community. Dark skinned girls need to know that they're important, beautiful and they deserve to have their stories told.

Don’t understand why people are so upset over Amandla playing the time in regards to her skin tone. I see comments that say Starr is referred to as “caramel” in the book, so what’s the problem..? Light skins are still black, lol. I’m light skinned but that makes me no different from my brother and sisters who have darker skin than me.

I kinda hate the fact they are using such light characters for african american movies. I understand it doesn't matter, but they never use dark skinned girls, ever, even if it was about slavery or africa! It's dissapointing. In fact, look at the cover of the book and the actress. There's a difference in skin. Hollywood just doesn't like dark skin girls anymore :c

_clearly, these racist haven't heard of the one drop rule it doesn't matter if she's light skin she has black in her {darker skin don't have it any harder than they do} watch the movie or don't but don't go around crying like bitches cause she's a shade lighter than _*_burnt black_*_ she's still representing._

She likens herself to be incredibly ""woke"" when she isn't. A good example of that is when she claimed to have refused the role for Shuri in Black Panther because she was biracial and light skinned (which is a lie by the way, because Letitia Wright was the only choice. She was picked by Chadwick Boseman himself), but at the mean time she has to problem playing the main character in The Hate U give - who is dark skinned and monoracial by the way.
@megasexyhotbabe00
@megasexyhotbabe00 6 жыл бұрын
Muses of a Dreamer yeah you said what I thought u meant and I agree with you. Half of me says yes she's hypocritical and the other half says maybe she's doing this because she's mixed and a lot of mixed people just don't even know where they fit in period. Because I think a lot of roles in Hollywood aren't specifically made for mixed people so if she wanted a roll she would just have to play a black woman honestly and that does end up taking away rolls for black women I think even if you're trying to be Pro back and fight the power she can't do anything about that weird buffer and in turn black women still end up suffering
@musesofadreamer7374
@musesofadreamer7374 6 жыл бұрын
No offense but it sounds like you are trying to sugarcoat her behavior. I, on the other hand, will not do such thing. Why should I sympathize will her plight as a biracial woman when she doesn't do the same to black women. She is trash for doing this. Plus we shouldn't forget she plays in a movie were she falls in love with a Nazi.
