"I am angry," says author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. "And I think everyone should be angry about the state of gender. But I also want to persuade."

Jeremy Parsons you're dumb. I'm from Ghana 🇬🇭 in African and never knew how it is to be black in a multiracial country until in stepped foot in America where being black is makes you to be viewed stereotypically as being more liable to commit crimes, hard to get the best jobs and less of a human as though being black is a crime. She says she never knew how it felt to be black is because we (Africans) respect all races and treat people of different races just as we will want to be treated. We treat them with respect and are very kind and hospitable people who work hard for what we get and are very proud of whatever little we're able to achieve for ourselves. Yes not only her but a lot of us born and raised in Africa never knew how it felt to be black until we came to the US so don't go about chatting shit you know nothing about!!

Jeremy Parsons are you stupid? this is why people shouldn't do interviews. people will just hear whatever the fuck they want to. i won't blame you since obviously you didn't see the talk she was referring to in the first place, but no, she's not saying she doesn't know what it's like being black, she was saying since she grew up in a country where everyone else is black, growing up as a child and teenager how was she supposed to know that in countries like the USA race was actually a big deal and a relevant factor in how people are perceived and judged. There's nothing unintelligent about that so calm down and open your ears next time.

Rip Van, I agree with you and great point, "If God had wanted men and women to be equal, then He would have made us all hermaphrodites". Sooo true. You see there has to be a balance; there are certain things women can't necessarily do and vice versa. Mothers are designed to spend majority of their time with their children; they are naturally nurturing etc. At the same time, if a man and a woman are doing exact same job they should be getting the same pay. There is good part of feminism and I think there is more positive to feminism than negative - pay equality, standing against rape etc. For example in Nigeria I was raped at about eight years old but told by family members its my fault for being raped. I know there will always be women who used their bodies to get ahead in life but there are times one didn't ask for it. There is positive to feminism but the extreme is also bad. If her viewpoint is equality for male and female across the board then that would be an extreme version of feminism. I don't think that God designed for women to dominate men.

It is so important to understand that ppl discuss issues from their own personal perspectives, experiences, & lack of experience. She has combined her culture & hardships of coming to America & the struggle she continues to incur & witness when she goes back home. Without others understanding "her" culture, upbringing, & background, it is hard to differentiate some of the exaggerated view points due to the mixture of two cultures that still collide as she is still adjusting & identifying to who she is, where she is, & where she is going. I've reached this conclusion by listening to her interviews & seeing the growth & change as she encounters others & is exposed to more. She has an outside perspective, which I find refreshing but on the other side of the coin there is an underlining ignorance of what it is to live & walk things out AS someone who has EMBRACED America vs someone who is on the outside looking in & participates as an observer.
@DUSM4 жыл бұрын
So poignant! I would agree that her opinions and positions on social constructs are provocative and insightful, but by no means are they all-encompassing. Individual points of view have seperate and defined beginnings that are further shaped by the dynamics of our environments and unique experiences. Each is a measure of truth, because points of view, observations, and interpretations may differ from person to person. None of them are whole truths, but as it is, many are ready to adopt someone else's position as a whole truth for themselves.

Hope you identify with her talk about the danger of a single story. It is so important that everyone who has important historical facts to share their facts before it is too late and gone forever because then it will help healing and promote oneness. Then one would see that there are personal stories that show that there are number of people on the perceived opposition side who did not see difference but saw people as people and that we are on just one side regardless of which geopolitical side of the war they found themselves in, and put their selves and safety on the line for them. Nope. This is definitely a western phenomenon too. Do you know how many men have said they'd hate for their wives to earn more money than them or that they'd feel emasculated if their wives were more successful than them. Trust me, this is 100% true. Not all people will think like this, but I think she's right. A lot of men feel threatened by the success of women and maybe even subconsciously end up putting them down in the workplace, at home, etc. Western men and Nigerian men experience this problem. Don't think that over here we're too developed to not be immune to such ideology.
@bbpadejumo53577 жыл бұрын
John Doe Well, it doesn't make anyone feel better knowing that they aren't the only ones suffering from a particular condition. Question is:- How is this remedied
@JohnDoe-ov9ib7 жыл бұрын
bbp adejumo, well for one I think if we can stop acting like it doesn't exist and that people who mention it are crazy, triggered feminists who just hate men or whatever bs stereotypes we hear everyday. I think that's the first step. Other than that, it's a matter of upbringing I think. I feel like a man/woman in his 30s, 40s, what have you, pretty much has his/her ideology more or less set in stone. If a man has grown up thinking men should be above woman, that view isn't going to suddenly change in his 50s. But if we raise our children differently with positive attitudes towards girls and women such that they don't feel threatened by women succeeding and don't try to put them down (as Adichie puts it "shrink themselves"), then society will move forward. But yh, to recap, it's a worldwide issue, not a Nigerian one, and I don't know how much about Adichie you actually know, but she's very well-read, well-traveled and very experienced so you'd be mistaken to think that because she grew up in Nigeria, her outlook on life is Nigeria-centric. If you haven't, watch a TED talk she gave called "The Danger of a Single Story". It's very good. Have a nice day :)

Chimamanda is a great woman and Igbo sister. I only disagree on certain issues. Using European language or terms feminism etc. Hmm this has more to do with Abrahamic religions or cultures. Then traditional African culture. Also race is an issue I got over a long time ago. I’m African and proud no one will not make me feel and different. Africans that have issues with this usually(other than certain episodes) have low racial/self esteem. Ironically I felt sorry for non Africans. Whining about racism is something that had more prominence in the 60’s. African ppl complain about this but walk around worshipping Europeans as god(aka Jesus aka Christianity) and wear Europeans names. Do they wear yours? And a massi once said don’t call me Kenyan that like telling the Europeans thank you for creating me. Nigeria is garbage. Europeans enclosed us into a nation that doesn’t make sense. And leaders that well you fill in the blanks! I love Igbo I love Yorubas Fulani. But Nigeria nah son! And race in America hmm poor school systems in Nigeria. Educate yourself beforehand. This is the culture in European nations get use to it or it will crush you. Africans in the West are you and they are you. Know thy self. I'm a straight white woman who'll go out of my way to open doors for both genders (yes, I said "both", not "all", haha. Don't get me started on that subject), but rarely do I see other women do so for men. It may sound like an obscure observation, but it says a lot, IMHO.
