Amateur sailor (Mozzy) takes on Paris 2024 selected athlete and professional sailor James Peters to see what really separates amateurs from pro's. With the help of James' sailing partner Fynn Sterritt the two helms go head to head in a series of sailing challenges using the ‪@49ersailing‬ the Men's Olympic Skiff.
Both Sterritt - Peters and #mozzysails are supported by Allen Brothers (fittings) Ltd

The sailing analysis was done using ‪@ivanbulaja‬'s SailViewer app: ib-sailing.com...

Well done Tom, an excellent idea for a video and you handled the boat extremely well, by the looks of it to me. Would like to see this as a series with the final being a trot on the helm of an AC40 or 70...🤞👍

This is one of the most interesting sailing videos I have seen. The great filming combined with really clear discussion of what was happening really highlighted the techniques you were using, and made the impacts on boat speed very clear. Such impressive physical effort as well - watching the boat acclerate as your legs straighten is cool.

Class vid. Everyone should know Mozzy is a top dog sailor. I once saw him halfway up a beat about 13 years ago!😂 needless to say that was as close I got. Good wetsuit move straight out the primary school bag!

Great video, what amazed me was how consistent the professional tacks were on the chart.

Great Video and my "takeaway" as we now enjoy using "managerese" talk in sailing: Your graphic comparison of the tacks and gybes and time/distance lost is a Biiig eye opener as to how precise your IT graphics are in general. Far easier to understand on dinghy's that average people sail rather than comparing top end sailing laboratories which is all a bit "over the top" compared with the best boats we'll ever get to set foot on. A very good performance for an "amateur" sailor. A little practice and more time spent on the water and you'd definitely be up there and maybe even better giving your understanding of the sport. As an amateur coach to juniors I was well impressed with the slalom course and will be implementing that as a fun exercise and hopefully move them forward a bit more. Cheers; well done, and keep up the magnificent work we all appreciate.

Outstanding video Tom! Really cool idea and an awesome session with the boats ad guys. I've only been on a 49'er twice but I loved it, so responsive. Awesome job slippery that boat!

I loved this. Loved it! At age 60 I never really raced this kind of boat. Audrey and I finished up on RS400 and to be honest that was too brutal for us. Both of the Helm/Crew combos were top level to my eyes. Love the centre at Portland. We have popped in there for stays when cruising on our "bigger boat". We like to come and watch the young talent at the centre while having a coffee!

Been looking forward to this one. Nicely done 💪 good video :D I wonder how you would have done over a weekend of training (or longer...?) I reckon you would have closed some of the gaps to the pros fairly significantly! For example, spending less time downwind in the gybes must be something you can improve once you're used the the boat and crew. Holding station might take a bit longer to master It would also be interesting to see them in an 800...

The wild thing about skiffs is having to dive off after a jib until the apparent wind is forward enough again to tighten up. Most other boats you want to jibe to the same angle you were at. Skiffs and the way the wind direction shifts according to how quick you are going it is a whole new paradigm shift in sailing all skiff sailors need to learn. In fact the compromise between boat speed and course is huge. VMG becomes a very hard balance to achieve. Sometimes going slower is better. Feels wrong. All the other complicating factors are still in play. Wind interference from land features. Tide or Current. Sailing is the art of compromise in Realtime over many many changing factors. Luv and Peace.

I’ve not sailed the 49er, but I have sailed RS800 and looking at the comparison it looks like the pro’s kept the boat a lot flatter through the manoeuvres in particular the jibes, but overall it looks like you communicated well as a team and you seemed to be having fun. The 49er is a fab boat!

Brilliant video to watch at this time (Paris 24), but the irony is that we hardly get to see any of the live action from Marseille, and consequently miss the opportunity to learn from these guys. Typical coverage shows boat being carried shoulder high and professional sailor waving. Personally I’d want somebody like Tom there doing commentary on the live feed giving real insights. I put this to Mark Jardine from YnY and he agreed there doesn’t seem to be anything, but he said he would be doing some coverage with Andi Robertson in the first week of August. Let’s hope it’s good!

The boys used a IP78 phone in rugged case and the sail viewer app. I often use the varakros atlas 2. A link to the app is in the description. It's been developed by coach Ivan Bujara. I've tended to use Njord Analytics in the past but need you to upload and really get on a desktop.
