I started pressing 7+ years ago...when tutorials on pressing were not heard of....I ruined many books trying to refine the craft in the beginning lol. One guy I would recommend to others is Gary at Impressive Comics. One of the guys that gave me a few tips when I first started. Good guy and is a master at pressing. Does an excellent job.

Great video! As someone who presses comics myself (2 years' experience) I can tell you that I put WAY more time and attention into working on a book than anyone else would. I have pressed most of the books you show here. This video is a fantastic tutorial of what types of books can be improved. No stains, no bent corners. The books you show are fantastic examples of the types of conditions that are optimal for pressing and grading. The rippling is from too much humidity and can be pressed out (but may require a second trip to the humidity chamber with a higher heat press and a longer duration of heat press). BTW, the ASM #306 has a chronic issue of not being cut correctly in terms of the top and bottom can be WAY off. I have seen copies so bad that they almost cut off the signatures on the bottom.

I think the biggest difference is when you press it yourself, you can afford to let it cool and remain in the press for 12 hrs afterwards, whereas pressing services - time is money for every press. Rushing the press can result in the press "falling out", not holding. Also, from what I am seeing, a lot of errors from rushing - which rolls back into the first point.

Really an inspirational video! Thanks especially for including the closeup photos of the defects you worked on. The number of books you got back from the "pro" presser with rippled covers was completely ridiculous, and shows ignorance and lack of care on his part. I know you say you just follow KaptainMyke's suggestions, but I think your viewers would welcome a video on correcting waves/ripples, which I'm sure literally everyone who learns to press or whiten comic books struggles with at some point, especially when using moisture.

So I also sent a bunch of my childhood books to that same presser and I also did not get the results I had wished for but like you I figured it was due to my grading / cleaning / pressing ignorance as it was my first outing... @ImproveCollectingComics
@ImproveCollectingComics Жыл бұрын
You might stand a fighting chance of getting latex off.. I would have to see it in order to make a guess on how I'd tackle it, it depends on if there is color underneath or not and a few other factors. But likely a tiny bit of heat and then a simple attempt to peel it off.. but yeah, never dealt with it yet so not 100% sure. Great video, Jim! I feel like I'm in the same position you were a few months ago. I just got back a bunch of books from a third-party presser. Unlike you, I'm overall very pleased with the results. But there are a few books that I think could get bumps - maybe significant ones - with a little more attention. Here's the thing - I don't blame the presser for that. I've seen DIY pressers press books multiple times; I just saw a video where the YTer claimed to have pressed a book a dozen times to get the result he wanted. Because of financial and time constraints, there's no way a third party presser can do that. So now I have an 8.5 X-Men 101 that I think could be a 9.0 or 9.2 (maaaybe a 9.4) with a bit more work. And I don't have the time (right now, anyway) to learn to do this myself. So I guess I'm stuck with it. 🙂
@ImproveCollectingComics
@ImproveCollectingComics Жыл бұрын
It's possible that a book can take several presses, but usually a bit of moisture and some tack iron/ball bearing work can remove the need for excessive rounds of pressing. Even the books I have with a ton of flaws don't need more than 2 rounds in the press. I make sure to leave those books in the cold press several days to help with reversion. Send me photos of the 101 and I'll give you my opinion, make sure the corners and spine are clear from several angles. improvecollecting@gmail.com

I love comics. But think grading is way over done. It’s. Not a diamond. Your grading that is tough. It’s a. Paper book. With art for kids. And. Take the fun out of it. It should be. Two grades only. This way. Every body haves. Fun. Making. You fell bad to have only. That’s so. Sad I only have a 9.0. When that’s is. A great condition that’s why I said the showing to two grades and anything that’s six below should be readers copies and then under six should not even be available for greeting too many grades making people very unsatisfied with a perfectly good comics always chasing 9.8‘s. Makes. You slave to there game. Only the truth
