Dragon Prince is a surprisingly good show, and since I couldn't seem to find a simple set of interpretations for all the signing scenes, I finally decided to try posting one myself.
*Notes:
Since ASL rarely shows tense, most of the translations are given in present tense.
I used videos by Let’s Chat (kzfaq.infose...) to double-check my interpretations, though I do disagree with him on a few minor things. Sorry for any mistakes you may catch!
0:21 -- The two signs “some one” should be a single sign.
1:00 -- “of flat object” isn’t said literally, but one nice thing about ASL is that you can say extensive things with a single sign since it’s a 3D language.
1:08 -- That looks like the sign “what” but it forcefully implies Amaya wants answers now or else.
2:21 -- “fight-building” and “wall-structure” are basically classifiers that show the shape, thickness, texture, etc. of objects rather than plain words that can be translated simply. Oftentimes guesswork is involved in interpretation.
4:10 -- Though this can be seen as a one-handed “what”, you can tell by Amaya’s flat eyebrows that she’s not asking a question but telling him to continue.
4:46 -- This isn’t the exact sign for “self” but she is indicating all of herself as well as implying she wants to impress that on him in his own way. Subtlety can be hard to translate.
5:15 -- Harrow has no idea he just said he’d stick his hand up someone’s rear. It’s a good thing to learn uncomfortable words to avoid mistakes like “I want sperm” when you mean to say “I want shrimp.”
5:38 -- Typically the sign "boy" is tapped twice while the less common sign "male" is tapped once (and it was cut off so quickly that it's hard to be sure if she might have tapped twice). I chose to interpret this as "guy" because there aren't any boys present, but she specifically didn't use the sign "man", which (when coupled with Amaya's little grin) makes me think she was making a colloquial joke.
6:11 -- “your” should not be mixed up with “you are”.
6:31 -- Once again a problem with “some one” vs “someone”. This part also includes her miming a person carrying something, and we can assume she means a torch but not until she actually picks it up. It’s easy to misinterpret without context.
7:42 -- Amaya starts off her sentence showing orderly forces advancing and repeats it with exaggerated movements to emphasize they are disorganized. Another example of how many ASL words can be subtly changed to mean something new.

@@landoboi3737 In my opinion they subverted the strong, independent womanly character I had admired at first with some sort of ridiculous infatuated teenager. The one and only point where she seemed to be the same person she was before is during the trial. I lost all respect for her very quickly because she simply wasn't the same person, which smacks of serious continuity problems.

Well, SEE (Signing Exact English) was looked down upon by virtually all of the people I knew in the Deaf community. We were only taught words like "the", "at", "-ing" and so on so that we could recognize them; not so that we could use them. After all, it's much easier to sign a man diving into a pool with three signs (pool + man + dive) than "The man dived into the pool" word-by-word. And when it comes to interpreting from English to ASL, economy of movement and simplifying phrases is *extremely* important since you need to be fast in order to keep up with a typical speaker. But once you get the meaning of the signs and understand the context, it's actually not all that difficult to make ASL into an English sentence.
@pennyporter5714

Thats the way ASL works, you take out smaller words which normaly make the sentance flow better.

It’s interesting that Gren’s translations aren’t perfect. I wonder if it’s because he’s deliberately adding his own character to Amaya’s signs, or if he missed or misread some of them.

This shows not only how dedicated the showrunners are to accuracy, but also how far we’ve come in production value. I use to think it was amazing when someone would speak a different language, and they actually had them say what the translated line was supposed to be. Like, someone says a line in Spanish that is subtitled in English, but the Spanish actually matches the subtitles. Now they’re even doing it with sign language in an animated show. I love this

From the time I saw General Amaya it was instantaneous that she was going to be a favorite of mine. Though I wish Netflix was more consistent with the ASL translations. This was hours and hours of collecting footage, uploading into a program, organizing, cutting, transliterating, interpreting, then making those into subtitles, and on top of it all trying to find appropriate music. I'm learning ASL and I understand most of what she's signing but also because she's using the typical signing structure of "Topic-comment" Example used in video: ASL: wrong what English: What's wrong? "Wrong" is put first as the Topic word and "what" is the Comment word Typically with signs like "wrong" or even "flashing"(if you will) the letters O and K for asking someone "you okay" in English. You can just very quickly do the second sign after, some people who are Deaf or Nonverbal(Mute is impolite) pick up the signs at the speed of a camera flash, because it's how they talk to each other. So you can do the sign for wrong, and then quickly add "what" after so the entire phrase would take maybe 5 seconds to do and understand.

Also i just love her, shes so caring and badass. and i love that there is a deaf character on the show, makes the world feel a lot more immersive and real, also i'm sure it meant a lot to deaf people seeing this representation, i dont recall ever seeing another (more or less) major character being deaf. edit: omg i absolutely love that she calls zim fire breath breath prince 😭😭

Agreed. The scene at the statue was right to remain private between just Amaya and her sister. I don't think it matters which one of them was older because the only one who would become queen was the one who married Harrow. Sarai had been married before, you know, which is why Callum isn't considered the heir to the throne. As for major characters in movies and shows being deaf, there are surprisingly more out there than you'd expect. My college had a Signing Lab where they collected not just videos made to learn ASL, but all the episodes that included signing from popular shows like "Little House on the Prairie", "Star Trek", "Bonanza", "CSI" and so on. There was even a show called FBEye that was popular when I was attending college and all the students were enthusiastic about it since it really delved into the nuances of Deaf Culture for your average person to understand.

The jump to the proper English grammar that avoids the word for word translation always feels like a wall that English speakers build against other languages and cultures. It is really interesting watching the signs, catching the meaning, and spotting a quick glimpse of the rephrasing below, as the video jumps to the next scene. I learned 2 kinds of sign language - English and American - the American one had very loose sentences and often set up a scene to refer to spatially to tell a story - Her "short hand" type sentences seem to fall into that system accurately. I'm so pleased to see the huge effort they put into her character when they could have just done vague gestures. :)

I started watching the show like two hours ago, and she's definitely one of the reasons I refuse, and will refuse to drop it. I absolutely love Amaya, the way she's a genuinelly interesting character. I also really adore her relationship with Gren. They trust each other, him being her voice is such a sweet and important detail, they share one braincell. (in the best way possible) Edit: i feel extremely ashamed because only now did i found out Amaya is deaf and not mute😭😭 long live this amazing woman, i love her no matter what

LOL! Yeah, my teachers told us it was closer to French sign language because when Thomas Gallaudet went to England to bring teachers to America, the BSL community didn't want to share their techniques with a foreigner. Left with no option, Gallaudet had to search elsewhere until he finally enlisted a deaf Frenchman.

Well, quite a number of Deaf people are a bit gratified by the fact that they don't include the subtitles since they themselves have limited access to communication most of the time, so in a way they're delighted to see hearing people wondering what's being said. Sort of a "Now you know what it feels like" kind of thing.

@@rhiaxtra LOL! Don't feel bad about it! It's not like I'm sitting here taking notes on who's making potentially offensive comments. Your complaint is a common one, and I have to admit I had a lot of trouble understanding her signs as well because most of the time she wears dark clothing with dark gloves -- the worst nightmare for interpreters! There's a very good reason most interpreters you see on TV will have dark clothing if they're white-skinned and light clothing if they're black: it's hard to see their hands otherwise!

I wish they’d given us subtitles for her untranslated scenes so those of us not well versed in sign language can understand the scenes too. Kinda makes me worry that when she inevitably gets more one-on-one time with Janai (there’s a confirmed arc for them) we’ll be consistently getting one side of all their conversations, because Janai isn’t going to translate out loud when she’s the only one being addressed.

@@jayreiacira I mean it’s fine to dislike a ship but I hardly think giving Amaya a love interest ruins her character. It's very well done, and I can see some bits of real ASL translations, repetitive and backwards sentences, and some of her accent shows some western US tones as well. People don't always realize that not all signs are universal and that many states and countries have their own slang and accents.
@jayreiacira
@jayreiacira 2 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure what you mean by "bits of real ASL". It's not like there's any fake ASL here, but you can tell every now and then that they thew in somthing they thought was right, likely without consulting an interpreter.
@PrayerWarrior4
@PrayerWarrior4 2 жыл бұрын
@@jayreiacira very often people go to websites for signs that they think are all universal, but not always the case...here for example I think they did observe an interpreter or consulted one due to how they animated her face and signs. Did you know that there are over ten signs for tomato 🍅 on the west coast of the US alone? A majority of the time I have to fingerspell or ask the deaf individual what they learned or use for the conversation. Sign language has its own complexities and history of changes every decade that its amazing how can all agree to a simple alphabet. Even in Britain, refered to as Signed English, has a different system than American Sign Language. I recently met a lady who grew up in Hong Kong while it was under British occupation and said signs were different there too, and back in the seventies she wasn't allowed to sign in public, even when attending the deaf school. I'm not complaining about the scenes in this series, I was observing and giving a compliment because it's not easy to animate sign language. Even in the Silent Voice anime movie, some of the Japanese Sign gestures were given a lot of special attention because they wanted to make sure the deaf character had the correct accent for where she lived and the story took place.

I took sign language classes. What I struggled with the most was that words aren't in the proper order in sentences compared to when you speak. So by the time I recognized all the signs and rearranged them into a spoken sentence in my head, the person who was signing was already a sentence or two ahead, and I had to keep asking them to repeat what they had said.

Also I barely know anything about this show, besides the fact there is a crap tone of different relationships. Not arguing, just here for the signs lol.

Okay some people may be confused or understand; in the video translate ASL into ASL grammar not in “English grammar” because ASL and English have they own difference grammar but same language. Which ofc is not the same translate as Gren is translating; well is because Gren is translating ASL grammar into English grammar for hearing to understand, me who am Deaf and know ASL, I understand what she’s saying :) (I think that’s more clear, if not then my bad 😅)
