Amazing abstract photos using Ferrofluid! | Macro Photography Tutorial

Ferrofluid is an awesome substance that is really fun to play with, great for teaching about magnetism...and spectacular for macro photography!
In this quick macro photography tutorial, we are taking a look at shooting ferrofluid up close. It's a challenging subject due to the black, messy liquid. Hard to handle and keep everything clean but also hard to photograph.
With the right lighting though, it can create some amazing and beautiful abstract macro photos. We're going to take a quick look at a simple macro photography setup for shooting ferrofluid with coloured LED lighting to create some amazing photo and video results. To answer your question- I didn't know a person COULD use this as a macro subject. Now that you have shown us, I have looked up the needed materials and WILL be trying my hand at it! Thank you SO MUCH for this video. It was the inspiration I needed to try something new.

Fascinating! I have some questions: is your Petrie dish glass or plastic? Does the Ferrafluid get hot? How do you clean the dish afterwards? How do I dispose of the fluid ultimately? Finally, what is the strength of your magnet? Thanks!

The dish is just cheap plastic, I'd imagine glass might be a bit brittle if it takes an impact from the magnet. The stuff doesn't get hot at all, there's no chemical reaction taking place, it's just moving to align with the magnetic field. I haven't managed to fully clean the dish I used, but I didn't try lots of methods. Nor have I disposed of the fluid, but I should think that any cleaning and disposal method that is suitable for stubborn oil would be fine.

Ive just tried it, but I dont have the adaptalux system, but I do have 2 small adjustable usb lights which sort of work but I cant get it right. The main light is too bright so I think I will have to make a 'beam controller' to get the light int he right place. I am using gels attached to my lights to get the colour and that works. So bac to the drawing board. Any help from anyone would be great.

Great vid................how did you get the shot at 13.41...................where you cannot see the Petri dish and there is a reflection ?

Hey Johnny. That shot was done by placing the fluid down on the glass of the coffee table and shooting with the camera very low down. I didn't show the setup as it made a HUGE mess and I wouldn't recommend it unless you have a disposable reflective surface to shoot on. Perhaps a cheap piece of transparent perspex would work well.

Will any size magnet work, or does it have to be a specific size?

Good questions Belinda! It's more about strength than size. It will need to be a very strong magnet like mine (40kg pull weight) for it to affect the fluid in the way you see here. I'd say typically any normal magnet you have around your home won't be enough and you will need something special.
