Actually the striker is following the blacksmith's lead. The Smith,with the smaller hammer is directing every strike. Where he hits,the striker hits. It's all under the Smith's control. Striker is just a flesh trip hammer!

Either that or as a prybar for splitting. But if that is the case it seems weird that he'd leave the side of the axe eye open so the handle could potentially come out. IDK

Kinda looks like it absorbs the vibration as well, so the hands don't feel it as much

For me, this tail is only for nothing.. All the other cultures whithout this thing made all whithout it. My fear is only, to lost an eye with is ;-)

@@aaronward4319 Ignoring the extra "handle" thing, it looks like a less secure way to haft the axe head. At first I thought maybe the thick handle went around the axe head and the thin "handle"(?) to hold them together but that doesn't appear to be the case. I feel like I must be missing something. In another video he appeared to make a hammer with a traditional hafting but never bothered with a wedge to secure it. I figure that maybe the tropics high humidity corrodes the head into place or something?

it is the way thai, mon, khmer ect poeple made their axes in history.. the tail gives balance and stops the axe glancing or bouncing much... stoneage axes form papua new guinea have similar sort of counterweight tails but of a much smaller size..
