print out a template use modge podge to attach to cardboard or foamboard then use an Exacto knife or maybe a box knife. I buy the cheap pencil sharpeners and attach them to the eraser end of a pencil since it is much smaller.

You are actually doing it on an ugly cardboard, and your final result is another beautiful one, the leaves and positions are different. I wanted to see your actual finishing, but anyway nice idea.
