“Operator” is his masterpiece. He was on the road as a touring musician most of the time. He only found commercial success near the end of his career. He had gotten to a point where he wanted to focus more on his wife and son. He was planning to limit his touring schedule. The plane crash came as he was winding down his last tour. I can’t imagine being his wife and hearing these lyrics on every radio. He finally found what he wanted to do but didn’t have enough time to do those things. A chilling song.

In almost all of his songs the guitar parts were played by both Jim and his musical partner Maury Muehleisen. Maury doesn't get mentioned as much because Jim was the lead singer and songwriter ... but Maury's guitar playing is sublime and a perfect pairing with Jim. Maury died in the same plane crash as Jim - this musical duo was an incredible loss to the world..

My dad told me when I was a kid that Jim sat down and wrote this song the night his wife let him know he'd be a dad soon. Sadly, he died just a few years after his son was born. My dad always said it was like Jim knew he wouldn't be around for his son, so he wrote this song to tell him how much he wishes he would be there. Such a beautiful song about a parent's love! ❤

The most beautiful song he wrote. I saw his son AJ in a concert at our local Community College. He is incredible on the piano, and he ended the show by singing this song. Jim Croce has so many hit songs, and surprisingly they were all released within 8 months before he died. There's no telling how much more he could have done if he had lived. AJ's stepfather was abusive to him and blinded him at 4 years old. He regained partial sight in one eye.

He wrote it specifically for his son, who is also a musician now, too. He wasn't able to perform this song, though, as it affected him just too much. Finally, when he had children himself he finally decided to do the song as a tribute to his dad, and for his child... Edit: His song "Operator" is fantastic too!

He passed before this song was released, I believe… adding another level of sadness through the melancholy nature of the melody and lyrics. “I Have to Say I Love You in a Song” is another of his classic ballads… though much more cheerful! And please do me a favor - include Croce’s song “It Doesn’t Have to be That Way” with your Christmas playlist. The song is just brilliant, and is a breakup & possible reconciliation song set at the holidays. It makes me feel hopeful because of the journey and words the character uses in the song.

On September 20, 1973, at the height of his popularity and the day before the lead single to his fifth album I Got a Name was released, Croce and five others died in a plane crash. His music continued to chart throughout the 1970s following his death. My Mom bought tickets to the concert that we never got to go to , she woke that morning and heard it on the news I was 13 at the time getting ready for school when she told me . As an early student of the guitar I was crushed by the death of a man with so much talent , later in life I was again moved when I found out all the backstory a true working class Joe he was .

Love this song - we had it played at our wedding. The song wasn't intended to be a single, but the album track got a lot of airplay, given that the album was release posthumously, a few months after Jim's death at age 30. It really gives the lyrics about never having "enough time to do the things you want to do once you find them" a deeper meaning when you know about his untimely death. Thanks for this one!

Love me some Jim. Operator, I’ve Got A Name, New York’s Not My Home. As others have said, he died right as he was becoming known so there isn’t a huge amount of tracks of his. However, of the few songs he released, almost all of them are worthy of review. He’s just that good.

In the mid-80's I lived in San Diego and went to college, and I took the Metro Bus to class every morning. There were a few transfers, starting at the Beach and going downtown, and then one to up county. While waiting for that last leg, a woman sitting on the bus bench said to me, without any warning, "You're an artist...or a poet", and I turned around to look at her and she was looking at me. She said, "My name is Ingrid...Ingrid Croce", and she just starting talking to me about what she saw in me, a perfect stranger, standing, waiting for a bus. And she talked about how I needed to pursue my dreams, and be this person that she saw..she said I was beautiful. I knew who she was. Her house had just caught fire, and everything inside was lost. I wanted to tell her that I was sorry...but, I could not say it. The bus came, and I got on it, and I regretted leaving her without saying anything. I remember her, and her encouragement, and I followed her advice. I understand why her husband wrote songs for her. She inspires. Behind every great man...

Songfacts®: Jim Croce wrote this reflective song the night that he found out his wife, Ingrid, was pregnant. The couple had been married for five years, and Ingrid found out she was pregnant when she went to a fertility specialist. She recalls a mix of terror and delight in Jim's reaction when she told him the news.

Thank you for revisiting Jim Croce's music! I really hope you can listen to some more of his songs. So far, you have barely scratched the surface of his talent. My favorites include the fantastic " I got a name." "Photographs and Memories," "New York's not my Home," and "I'll Have To Say I Love You In a Song". Jim Croce recorded "I Got A Name," right before he tragically died in a plane crash. It was his last song released and didn't get released until after his death, which makes it all the more impactful, IMHO.

If I could save time in a bottle The first thing that I'd like to do Is to save every day 'til eternity passes away Just to spend them with you If I could make days last forever If words could make wishes come true I'd save every day like a treasure, and then Again, I would spend them with you But there never seems to be enough time To do the things you want to do once you find them I've looked around enough to know That you're the one I want to go through time with If I had a box just for wishes And dreams that had never come true The box would be empty Except for the memory of how they were answered by you But there never seems to be enough time To do the things you want to do once you find them I've looked around enough to know That you're the one I want to go through time with

Guitarist is Maury Muehliesen, who died in the plane with Jim. He helped Croce develop his songwriting a lot too. The high notes are harmonics, played by only touching the strings at particular frets, but not holding them down.

This song reminds me off my big bro, my only brother, who died two years ago. I thought we'd get to be two grumpy old bachelors together. All the men in my life that I grew up with are gone now and the memories we made are on loop in my mind with no one to relive those great memories with. Truly if I could have time in a bottle. The world truly lost a lot when Jim died but I am so grateful for the music he did leave behind! ♥️
