I am pleased you enjoyed your time on Rakiura. Some Rules to remember if you encounter Kiwi. Firstly stay still and just enjoy the rare experience. Stay a few metres away and don't worry if they approach you, just keep still. Second, don't move towards the bird or try to pick it up - it's an offence to hold kiwi without permission from DOC. Also, be weary of their sharp claws - they're wild animals and can get stroppy. Lastly, feel free to take photos or video, but only in low light conditions and don't use a flash as it can stun the birds.

I can see why Nintendo made this guy a Pokemon... Imagine if this big, ball of fluff of a bird was a whopping twelve feet tall, walking around in any part of the woods, especially with its oddish (pun intended) avian appearance? That's a hell of a pocket monster.

I do believe you're describing Dinornis robustus AKA moa nunui, AKA the South Island giant moa. The largest species of moa. Adult females stood up to 2 metres (6 ft 7 in) high at the back, and could reach foliage up to 3.6 metres (11 ft 10 in) off the ground, making them the tallest bird species known. 😊

On Stewart Island, Rakiura, kiwi often forage for food during daylight hours. I can assure you this bird is perfectly okay. :)

HI, there. Kiwi are very engaging. They come to us, we don't actually stalk them. There are good numbers of kiwi in forests that aren't poisoned by government agencies. The biggest issue is, most forests in New Zealand are now repeatedly poisoned, year on year.
