Join me today as we visit the beautiful ruins of the church and cemetery. Fascinating old stones here.
Old St. Mary's Church, was originally built as one of the satellite churches of the Cahir Abbey during the medieval period, along with others in Killemly, Loughloher, Ballymacadam, Kileenbutler, in response to increased demands on the monastic community.
The parish Church is a multi-period building, constructed largely of local limestone and consisting of a nave and chancel joined by a now partly built-up arch. The walls are three foot thick throughout, except for the West wall, which is four foot thick, and carries the double bell cote. The present buildings at Cahir Abbey and Cahir Castle belong mainly to the 15th century and certain features of the chancel of the Parish Church would suggest a similar date, although there remains the possibility that it occupies the site of an earlier structure. The features in question are the intricate interlace patterns on the East window, rare examples of the late Celtic medieval revival also found at Cahir Abbey. In Addition there is a corbel on the South wall of the Chancel depicting a carved ecclesiastical head, examples of which are also found on the North-West tower of Cahir Castle and the East window of the Abbey.
After the dissolution of the monasteries by Henry VIII in 1540, the Parish Church would have gradually taken over the monastic duties. Indeed the first recorded Parish Priest of Cahir, Edmond O'Lonergan, was the last prior of the Abbey. By 1596, the parish church was being called St. Mary's, the name which has survived to the present. It has undergone much alteration over the centuries and local tradition claims that for a period after the reformation in 1536, both Catholics and Protestants used the Church simultaneously, the curtain wall between the nave and chancel segregated the two communities. This is probably up to the arrival of Cromwell in 1650, as it was only in the 1600's that the Church of Ireland became territorially organised, with a minister resident in the town. Prior to this (in the 1536-1650 period) several benefices (parish unions) were held together, due to a lack of clergy, parishioners and finance. Cahir remained largely in Roman Catholic and Quaker ownership until the late 18th century, and numbers of Anglicans were very small. Just 63 Protestants (including Quakers) lived in Cahir Parish in 1766.

Fantastic video . I'm glad there wasn't a red balloon 🎈 in that hole you looked into lol . A peaceful place with so much history and character and the carvings on the memorials all have their belief in God etched into them , something that isn't as frequent today, the church was amazing and to think there was a curtain seperating people who believed and prayed to the same god Thank you so much Serenity Sue for taking us to another beautiful place and for the time you and GV take to bring us the best . Xx

Its still amazing how old the cemetery you visits ,it seem in only the blink of eye that the deceased walked and breathed on this worldly plane and now we walk on the same path . Your filming and commentary on the head stones is fantastic and great dedication and caring nature for the dearly departed. Hopefully the sun allways stay shinning over your shoulders.👻

You said it Sue, this place is truly AMAZING. The age of the church, the headstones 🪦. I believe that hole with the stone border is an old crypt that had the stairway filled in with dirt to seal it up. I think that statue of the Virgin Mary and the glass cover was placed there in the not too distant past. I wonder 🤔 what the story is behind that, since the church ⛪️ was no longer being since the 1820s, or am I mistaken? You and GV did a wonderful job with this video 📹. Thank you very much, and have a great weekend.

Hello Sue, it's me David I'm your #1 fan and I was watching you with both eyes this time.👁👁 Discovering At 1:45 you stepping into what appeared to look like a large stone lined hole and peering🔦👀into a passage way into an Underground Crypt that was sealed up with bricks.🧱🧡🍀I then told myself that I'll bet Sue didn't realize that she was already in the Crypt when she stepped down into that "Hole." That what she had noticed, would have been the Exit passage out of the Crypt. No Bone's☠🦴about that, I bet that their were Bone's☠☠literally Underfoot under your foot in that "Hole" Crypt! I just had to tell you first when it all added up, because that's what friend's do for each other.❤🐇🐇🐇Sue you're the greatest! 😁
