Looks like he used a diode to reduce the 5v from the usb charging cord to 4.3v, which is pretty close to the 4v of the battery.

It makes sense if the charge protection circuit is on the usb connector side, then again there is no marking on the device saying what kind of battery is being charged; scary stuff.
