@@bdmention I do the same thing when first listening to songs. To me the voices are just other instruments playing notes, with effects of various sorts. After I've done that many times, I'll start to notice what the words are, and then I'll see how those plug into the feelings the playing itself gave me. As a kid, that was how I learned that the music was a sonic metaphor for the lyrics in most great songs.

@@s.mcpherson6354 I guess it’s crazy how people take In music differently and how it effects us. I’m exactly the opposite of what you said im very much tuned into the lyrics it’s the first thing I hear if I don’t like them I may not like the song no matter how good it is. I think maybe I just expect the song to be about something and not just a bunch of notes compiled together.

Brad's frozen eye-pop as he realised what the song is about... 🤣😂😅 Yeah in the first verse it says he sees the centrefold in the girlie mag "years later", so it's his childhood memory of an innocent crush that's getting trodden on. Guys have two completely different views of desirable women, and yes, it's paradoxical and confusing: Real girl you want to be with seriously in real life = innocent angel Fantasy girl you want to spend one night with = sexy centrefold Basically, when you're young, you put girls you want to respect on a pedestal, whether it's deserved or realistic or not. Then you grow up...

The lyrics in this song would hold no water in today's society. There was no Internet in 1981. Back then, when high school kids were attracted to one another, it was more like an innocent love. They knew about the birds and the bees, but didn't REALLY know about the birds and the bees. Today I imagine most kids, even before high school, are pretty well versed in what goes on between the sheets. Attitudes have totally changed between the kids these days. 💜

The centerfold is the best real estate in a magazine besides the cover because it's the least distorted by the crease of the magazine. In girly magazines it's used to show the featured model of the issue in one picture that spreads across both pages. This is done with basically any kind of magazine too.

J. Geils Band was in the top five party bands of that era. Once they changed their sound to commercial pop/rock most people seemed to love them, especially the girls. Lex showed the exact reaction of girls who would instantly get up and dance when this song played at a party or on the radio on the beach. Back then we had a few beaches left you could drive your jeep on with a keg of beer and just party wild. Those were fun times with lots of freedoms and not as many rules to abide by. Today is so different. Feel bad for kids today when I think back at what we could do by comparison. I think by the mid 80's the laws began to hinder all that fun. By the 90's those changes reflected in the kind of music that was written and created. And it just went on from their. Today at least we have sites like KZfaq to go back and even the kids get to experience part of the fun we all had. Lex would have fit in perfectly back then musically. When I grew we would look back at the 50's and 60's and think at all the crap those kids got away with compared to the 70's. But if we only knew what was coming in the 2000's. We had it made. 🤑 A little fun fact sort of. Peter Wolf the original lead singer moved on from the band when they went in the pop/rock direction in the 80's.

True story - there's a video for this that features a number of scantily clad young women. I knew two of them personally because we were colleagues at a Boston based weekly newspaper, The Boston Phoenix (similar to the Village Voice). One of them was going out with Elliot Easton, (guitarist for The Cars, who like the J. Geils Band were from Boston), at the time, and everyone in the local music scene knew everyone else. I remember when the video for this tune came on MTV at the time, I had a minor freakout when I recognized them, probably just like the guy's reaction in the song!

Undeniably a tremendous pop song. Got that trifecta, lyrical hook, melodic hook and rhythmic hook. Off a great album to boot.

J.Geiles always started and ended their concerts in Hartford and after singing alot of there songs would sing for a couple hours doing some covers of some big bands....(they are from Boston like Aerosmith) They reinvented themselves in the 80's with the album this came from.... Not bag pipes....organ.

Great review Brad and Lex! If you like music made with a harmonica you should check out their song Whammer Jammer. Absolutely 💯 one of the best in rock history! My guess is you will love it!

The sound at the beginning is a harmonica. I saw this band in 1980 on the Love Stinks tour. The whole Love Stinks albums would be a great reaction! These guys killed in the 70's with Southside Johnny! on Whammer Jammer!

In this episode of Brad & Lex, the driving force of the drum kick and snare accompanied by joyous melodies send Lex directly into her "shoulder bop" equipped with "couch hops" smiles, "elbow shuffles", cheers and claps. Brad flashes his pearly whites briefly while displaying his signature "side to side sway".

I really enjoyed your discussion at the end. Brad, I thought you articulated that well. You reminded me of something I heard a number of years ago - the 'Madonna/Wh0re complex(?)'. As I understand it (and won't articulate it well), I think it boils down to a double-standard of men wanting their women to be a pure, modest & honorable person in public, and a freak in the bedroom. As always, enjoyed your vid; and a shout out to the 'lyricist' in the vid you used - I enjoyed his/her humor.

Brad nailed it. The girl he remembered from homeroom back in the day he thought was an angel. Then he grew up and saw her in a nudey magazine and it crushed his whole memory of her. His "angel" had become a centerfold

Vocalist Peter Wolf made a song called Come As Your Are. In the video he jumps all the way through it. Must have been hard filming it

She’s a home room girl that was sweet and as years go by he sees the centerfold. His memory has been sold in the centerfold.

Lol Brad you nailed the song. Totally got what he was saying. The girl he longed for in highscool. Later in life ended up a centerfold in gentleman's magazine. Robbed him of every thought, idea, and memories he had of her. And his coming to grips with the reality of life. Also, this was the early 80s. No Tender or even internet yet. You actually had to speak to a woman. Face the chance of rejection. Before you could ever get to see her with her clothes off. Song is life and lost innocents. Nailed it.

Ya'll are awesome,..so glad you gave this a listen,..this was another one on MTV morning, noon and night!!,..you so, so should watch the video, even more entertaining,..they're dancing and everything,..like David Lee ,.Van Halen in Hot For Teacher,..awesome video,..ohh,..and by the by,..lead singer was married to Faye Dunaway, amazing, actress, from original Bonnie and Clyde with Warren Beatty, and she's also in original movie version of Hand Maid's tale, (before it was a series)Chinatown with Jack Nicholason, Eyes of Laura Mars with Tommy Lee Jones,..I only found out I think at the time probably on MTV,..because this band had made it big, and because just before they did she divorced him,..I couldn't believe it,..and after I found out,..I really watched all their videos,..at the time you know we didn't have Google, so you couldn't just look up pics of someone,..you could only see them on magazine covers,..tv,..thats it,.and these guys probably made the Rolling Stones mag cover,.I can't remember,..but I tried at every turn to get a good look at him, cause I was like Faye married a rocker!,..like go girl,..lol you got a wild streak!, ..do keep going young people,..we love ya'll,..Godspeed, Peace ✌
