The sharpness of Japanese chisels is excellent. Take a look at the scene where the wood end is cut to 0.1 mm! another respected channel @dylaniwakuni @DorianBracht @marcip @HCarpenter

Ive never seen that level of finese before,. Incredible how consistant that cut was made and it did not look like the first time you had done it either.

So John malecki tried (and failed) to recreate this. He was using what looks like dry southern yellow pine so big surprise, but the number of people in his comments saying it is fake or that you are trimming off a layer of finish/wax/glue/resin is making my head hurt.
@luthiermarian11 ай бұрын
I just recreated this in spruce. Besides having a really sharp chisel (not just hair cutting, but hair splitting level) the wood also needs to be soaked. Bone dry spruce crumbles instantly. Also, if one tries in hinoki, Port Orford or Alaska cypress, the results are again better.

@@luthiermarian the day the video came out I went and tried it on a piece of basswood and my results didn't look as nice but it worked and his video now has >500 comments and easily 70% of them are just comments trying to figure out how this was fake because none of them seem to work wood.

Does the wood need to be oiled or prepared or is it purely just the sharpness of the chisel?

A little water on the wood! The rest is the sharpness of the chisel😆‼️
