Paint mottle video: • GET BETTER MOTTLE on M...
This is my build video for the Tamiya 1/48 BF109 G6 model, the kit is fine for what it is but it is a bit gimmicky with the multiple cowling options and magnets and the build enjoyment suffers because of it. Fit and overall detail is what you would expect from modern Tamiya......brilliant.

I’d still rate this kit pretty high. Eduard’s Mustang had all the rivets and panel lines on the wings that you need to fill if you want an accurate Mustang. Build wise, this is still a Tamiya kit :)

Ah yes but you could then argue that the Gustavs could also be filled as many later G6s and on were smoothed out like the 262s but it’s nice to have the option, however it’s not the detail or lack of rather the general feel of the build and the blank trop filter really quite poor. Still it is a Tamiya kit and certainly isn’t a filler queen so there is that 👍

I certainly think as a kit you get far more for your money in the Eduard box and the fit is really quite good but there are a few more drop in panels etc that can cause issues, the schemes are great too. Yeah see which one looks better on the table, it worked for Scale a Ton, Zvezda too remember….

@@TheModelGuy The Eduard kit is less accurate in the windshield side windows to the Tamiya, and also less accurate in the nose depth, nose shape and most obvious of all the too long legs, which are also the wrong F type in skinnyness... The Tamiya has only a little excess width between the cowl machine guns: almost nothing...

I will tell you something, keep your current style of video narration that works perfectly for 'radio listener' type of users, I put your video in the background while working and I can still follow and enjoy the video, I can switch to video's window if I needed to see what's going on .. lots of viewers are like that nowadays due to remote working styles, and trying to multitask with today's busy world. The close up filming and the clear audio in your videos make it hard to skip watching them while looking for something to passively-watch while doing something else.

Some of those panel lines and access points are for the F model, not a G, so Tamiya are reducing overall costs of molding by accommodation for that. Whether or not they release any more will depend on sales, I guess. But certainly any 109 from the F-2 thru to the G-14 ( but not the G-10 or G-6AS/ G-14AS or any 2 seater) would be possible.

I recently built this kit in Swiss markings... I thoroughly enjoyed it. I did find the need to fill in the details on the lower wing kind of a bummer, but it didn't detract from the overall enjoyment of the build. I would like to build an Eduard kit for comparisons sake at some point. Anyway, yours turned out great and I enjoyed following along.

While I agree that the features of the Tamiya kit are a little "gimmicky", you have to remember that Tamiya is very much in the practice of "marching to their own drummer" without much regard for what competing firms - like Eduard - are doing. The Eduard kit is also very good, just don't look too long at the cowlings and exhausts. Having built both, each kit - and manufacturer - have their strengths and weaknesses. I'm loath to criticize either kit too much as I'm fairly old and can still remember when building an accurate 48th Bf-109G required a fair bit of work and some scratchbuilding. And filler, quite a bit of filler. A fine build here in this video, if a bit "formulaic" in the current fashion.

For the BF 109 in 1/48 I think Eduard have the best kit with good fit and amazing surface detail. Wingsy seem to have come out with a very good E model but I have not had the chance to built it yet but detail wise it appears to be at least on par with the Eduard kit. I hope that Tamiya will do one in 1/32 as the upcoming Zoukei Mura release does not appear to be riveted.

Have you built a kit using them or is that something that can be done in the future, building two kits, one with the 3D decals and one without and compare the results.

I was very luck to get this through work from Tamiya and although i agree with wat you say particularly around the engine cowls and the faffing around with swapping it out i did decide to glue mine closed and make it fit batter that way. I did really enjoy building this one but to be honest im very biased to the 109! Eudards is a way better value kit and dont have to fill bits like you said. I would build it again bit i wouldnt want to pay for this one when we can get better value from eduard. I also built the Spit again procured the same way i wasnt overly impressed and thought the 109 was a better kit ! All that a side!! Loved how yours was finished and stunning!!!

The forward leading edge slats, only if they are damaged should they be displayed open. Both deploy upon slow speed landing, {before the AC would approach stall} never any other time, THEY ARE NOT HYDRAULIC. Mechanics, before each flight ensured the worked perfectly. If one deployed and because of damage, the other stayed closed when attempting to land. CRASH! If after take off, one stayed open, the pilot quickly returned to base and tried to land. The adjustment - a pair of pliers, a little twist here, a little twist there, they worked correctly. So when I hear people complain about authenticity of the 109, I always look at the forward leading edge flaps. To each their own on their builds, I have no problem with that {before anybody starts to cry}. Even aircraft have to squawk when flying. After purchasing the ED/SPH Tempest Mk.II, ED can keep their kits. To many bites at the apple to get anything correct. Have they heard of locating pins? And their 190 series? GEEZE! Try and close those cannon covers, forward MG cover or locate the wing spar. Your 109 came out excellent - Congrats! Always enjoy your vids
@brettpeacock9116
@brettpeacock9116 2 жыл бұрын
Tere are any number of photos showing the skats open on the ground. They were pushed shut by the airflow and slipped open again approaching stall speed on landing. They stayed open unless the Ground crew closed them by hand, usually to test their function, after which they slowly rolled open again. Their whole function was to improve aerodynamic lift at slow speeds to take off and landing.
@bobdyer422
@bobdyer422 2 жыл бұрын
@@brettpeacock9116 Yes, the slats that are damaged, or have debris in the tracks, stay open. FOD can cause them to stay deployed, especially since the Luftwaffe used so many grass fields. If you ever have watched a 109 landing you see how they operate. Often extending and retracting multiple times before landing while approaching stall speed. Then the slats retract automatically upon landing. That is how they operate. The slats will even deploy in flight with gear up when the pilot comes to close to stall speed. The slats just don't hang out. They also {the slats} stay closed on take-off, unless there is a problem, like the pilot doesn't get to take-off speed, or he accelerates to quickly and the torque of the MB sends him skidding off, a single wing lifts and he ground loops the 109.
@pauka13
@pauka13 2 жыл бұрын
Bf 109's with extended slats are commonly seen in wartime photos, as most of the time they remained in their extended position after landing. Günther Rall himself talked about this once asked, that pushing back the slats by hand was a common practice after the plane landed and secured, just to prevent any debris or dust getting into the slat tracks. So it is completely up to the modeler how he want to depict his kit, because both way are correct. Ps: Eduard's current fw 190's are a dream to build, fortunately they ditched the overly complicated first releases.

The eduard kit has fit issues in the later pressings. My group built 9 of them, every single person said that the eduard is horrible due to flash so bad that you can't tell what the part looks like. The parts you can get to do not fit right, the wing to fuselage fit is bad, even the upper to lower wing fit was bad. The average builder in our group had 12 years of experience.

Hello Jason, I can understand why you have made a few negative comments about this kit. I have built this kit but for me none of the issues was a big deal. As you have shown us it is perfectly possible to build a great looking model from this offering, almost all of it goes together well as you would expect from Tamiya. I enjoyed it and yes, I have just left the engine cowlings open not bothering with the option to repeatedly reconfigure the model. I also have the good looking Eduard G-6 kit to build later so will get to compare the two. Cheers, Pete.

I really enjoyed this build your and appreciated your candid comments regarding the Tamiya/Eduard choice. You have also shown some products I have not used before and learnt something. As for details, flaps are typically “lowered” is the undercarriage (aka “chassis” as described on Spitfire plaques or “gear” in US English). Also, aircraft are rarely left with flaps lowered. Would an acrylic retarder lengthen the drying times of the GW washes? You were also looking for the term “longitudinal” panel lines? The “front flaps” are lead edge slats. They are extended automatically by the aircraft’s angle of attack or by gravity when there is no airflow. The blobs you applied on the HF aerial represented the insulators. Many of these were ceramic. ps. Where are the swastikas? Removing them is airbrushing/rewriting history.

Tamiya did much worse than this G-6 with virtually every one of their previous kits (especially the swollen fuselage P-47 with inaccurate clear parts, or the undersized Il-2 canopy, not to mention the flat belly and heavy framing on their Stork)... The 109's panel line issue is interesting: No other reviewer pointed this out, and I commend you for doing it. That being said, this is still by far the best Me-109G in 1/48th for at least two reasons: Far better accuracy in the canopy framing than even the excellent Zvezda, and this is also the first G kit ever to have proper beefed-up gear legs, not the skinny F gear legs Eduard put on all their Gs, as did Zvezda... For that alone, Tamiya for the easy win among Gustavs...

I like this kit. I think Tamiya has a different philosophical approach; provide options that have much realism, but all in one kit, and minimal fasteners engraved for the "distant" scale effect. Eduard requires purchase of additions for the options, which bring the price up to or past Tamiya. Eduard, though, puts more into close up detail, expecting a closer view of a/c detail. So, it is a choice, it seems... Speaking of choice, in my quest for realism, I've always sought references before starting, so I'd accurately know such as, when & how RLM mandated the changeover from 02 to 66 in cockpits and canopy framing, what colors were mandated for what types of lines in a/c, and what insulation colors were used on wiring. Also, to me, realism demands truth, e.g., swastikas where used, SS license plates where used, etc. This isn't, or shouldn't be, about emotion, hysteria or propaganda, because showing truth is NOT equivalent to sympathy! Despite what some believe, it's not still 1945. History tends to place ideas in proper perspective, apologists notwithstanding.

The worst model ever, after many days the final assembly of the engine bay, was impossible to fit, ended up in the bin. Too complex, useless, and confusing parts and versions. It a very expensive in the UK 36 Sterlings. I have spent over 200 on paints, airbrush, and accessories for one model! I couldn't even order a complete set of Tamiya paints in the whole UK! Very annoying hobby. Not for me, I use to dot with Airfix and Humbrol paint with no hassle.
