That's simply not possible considering a good >5% require pulling. This has been standard procedure for assisting difficult births for decades. FYI- I'm not saying you're wrong. I'm a vegan and against factory farming to begin with. What's shown in this video though has been the standard method for "pulling" calves for at least 50 years and is only done when the cow CAN'T give birth for one reason or another (generally malposition of the calf). I should say at least it was only done under those circumstances when I was younger, living in a rural area, and working for a vet that worked mostly in large animal (serving lots of large farming operations). This method was old school even back then in the 1970's to 80's and done only when the mother couldn't deliver naturally.

What they are using is called a "calf puller". They use it when the cow is having trouble pushing the calf out by itself or when there are signs that the calf (or mama cow) are in danger. It's like forceps for cows.

I guarantee that the cow is already stressed by not being able to push the calf out. If the calf is stuck in the birth canal (like a baby in the breech position) it's dangerous for the cow to try to push it out. In fact it can be fatal for calf and momma cow if the calf gets stuck in there for too long.

If you are talking about the calf extraction that is the only way to deliver the calf if the cow is not able to push it out. The alternative is to let the cow and calf die in labor.

They breed for bigger calves so they can get more meat out of the calf when it grows up. It truly is sickening, but this is what billions of 12 oz steaks per day causes. It is pure greed. It seems that device to pull the fetal calf out puts so much pressure on the cow's lower body. It is some kind of hard metal part and you can see that it even indented the cow.

I think it's cruel and uncaring to put that poor cow through such an ordeal and it really upsets me, however how long was she in labor, that calf needed to be born and was gasping when it came out of her, it does not take long for a calf to suffocate, so I can't be to harsh on something that young man has seen this situation more then once.

All he cared about was getting done as quickly as possible to move to the next or be done with it. Her labor would have been much easier had she been allowed to walk and do what nature intended. Assistance when needed is one thing and this surely was not it. If need be you should only pull or apply pressure to the calf's legs when the mother is having a contraction and pushing herself. Even then it should be done steadily and in a downward motion and released when the contraction is over. Using a winch like that he has no idea the force being applied. This was wrong on all accounts.
