I think this cake is something I would enjoy because it doesn't have icing or frosting. A piece of cake like this is perfect with a cup of tea or after-dinner coffee. Thank you, John. Blessings for 2023.

I made these as cupcakes today and they are so delicious and moist. Love the lemon flavor. For those interested in making cupcakes, I baked them at the same temp for around 18-20 min.

My first attempt at a Preppy Kitchen recipe! I just made this cake for a baking contest at work and it won! I added a few fresh berries to the batter, and topped it with a few more fresh berries, some lemon slices, peach slices, and confectioner's sugar after it was done. It was a hit! 🎉❤

I used to work at an Italian restaurant and we had a version of this cake on the menu. We made it with Grand Marnier and orange zest. And it also had a marsala wine/simple syrup soak that really made the flavor spectacular. Served simply with whipped cream. It was divine. I can’t wait to try your version John!

A little awkward to post this on John's page, but Claire Saffitz's olive oil cake sounds really similar to the one you are describing - she also uses Grand Marnier and (blood) orange zest. I’ve been making this for a few years now, original recipe from America’s Test Kitchen. It’s a fantastic cake, easy and so surprisingly yummy for how simple it is. Highly recommended. 😊

@@taylorhalders1841 no, you don’t taste it at all. Of course, it can probably make a difference what brand you use. I just use regular olive oil from Costco. Not the extra virgin olive oil. :)

Your descriptions are wonderfully rich & vivid. Seriously, the way you talk about & describe this cake is why I will be DEFINITELY making it. And of course, your clear step by step showing makes it such a do-able thing to want to make. The only thing I'm not fond of is the name "olive oil cake" so I'll have to come up with a name I like better after I make & taste this moist-cloud-crunch-top cake.

Just made this today and O. M. G. It's so moist and delicious that words fail me in describing just how delicious it is. Thank you, John! One observation: I followed the recipe to the letter and my batter was more liquid than John's, in fact no leveling was necessary because owing to its liquid consistency, it self-leveled. This made me a little concerned, but the finished product looks just like John's. Not sure what to make of any of this, but there it is. Treat yourself to one of THE most superb cakes you'll ever eat!

i think the problem here: oilve oil-1 cup extra-virgin olive oil (240mL) and 1 cup is 120 ml, not 240

I agree. I'm baking the cake right now. I noticed that the cake batter seemed watery. I did not measure the flour in cups, but with my scale. 2 cups of flour equals 250 gm. The oil, milk and sugar I measured in cups only. Not measuring the flour in accurate grams I think made the difference in the batter. This is my conclusion. Thanks @winkielaroo, at least I wasn't the only one this happened to.

I’ve never really baked. But this was an accomplishment! i made another for a friends bday. I added zest from lemon, lime, tangerine, and a little blood orange juice for color. not that it needed it but i made a really light caramel sauce and drizzled it sparingly. No words.

This cake is absolutely delicious! I was hesitant about the extra olive oil, but I went on ahead and it is now one of my favorite cakes. I plan to make it again soon. I will mention, which didn't make any difference in the end. The flour measurement at 240 gm is not correct. I used my scale and I used the 240 gm. The batter came out watery, not like yours on the video. I baked it anyway and it still turned out beautifully. 250 gm is the correct amount. But John this is a wonderful cake no matter how you put it. Thanks for your hard work and great recipes.

@@jguarino6029 Even I was thinking so!.. but it was such a moist, soft cake. No trace of olive oil friends dint believe when I said it was made out of olive oil. I kept it outside and had for 5 to 6 days it was still good. No need to refrigerate. Give it a try and you will know.

Made this recipe today (1/5/23) and my goodness it is so delicious. I've tried to make other Olive Oil cakes before this one and they did not do well. This is so tender and it's just like you describe and needs nothing added to it unless you just want to. Thanks for the videos.

😅I just maje this cake and O.M.G 😮 it’s so moist and fluffy! Let me tell you I follow the measurements by the book and it came out a little more watery so I added two spoons of corn starch and prayed when I put it in the oven! 😅 came out so delicious 🤤

Thank you for the recipe. I baked this cake this evening and it turned out so well! I used 1 1/4 cup of sugar and it was still really sweet, I also didn’t add the extra sugar on top and I had a crunchy top still, I also added some blue berries. Very delicious recipe, thank you 😊

I've been making this cake recipe several times now cuz it's just so good. Perfectly moist and flavorful (from the olive oil). It doesn't need icing at all! In my opinion, the best cake ever!

I make a olive oil cake with lemon zest. Its topped with a whipped mascarpone mixture & lemon curd. I decorate the top with blackberries. It’s beautiful & delicious 😋

John, amazing! This cake we do in Valencia, Spain, all the time. We called it in Valenciano "tin cake". Exact same ingredients, it's delish. But we don't put anything else on top, just the crusty sugar as it comes out the oven. It's a go to for mid afternoon snack. At least when I was small, I'm 41.

I just want to say on January 5th, I followed your recipe and ate an amazing cake on my birthday. I forgot to come back and leave a comment, but the cake is still good and I am still finishing it. Oops! I made this cake but misread.the amount of sugar and was shy one egg. The cake was still delicious but dense. I topped it with a blueberry sauce and my husband and I enjoyed it very much. I will try the recipe again and use orange juice and zest instead of lemon and the right amount of sugar and eggs! Love watching you

OMG, just made it and it is so GOOD!! We’ve managed to eat about 1/3 of it while still warm from the oven. Loved the crunchy sugar on top. Did up the qty of lemon juice to 1/4 cup though.

Beautiful cake, looks delicious! love the sugar topping, will try. I sliced lemons, dipped them in sugar and put them on the bottom (similar to a pineapple upside down cake). When I flipped it, it made for a beautiful presentation of my lemon olive oil cake, which I made with almond flour btw ☺

That's called "bizcocho" here is Spain, kids eat it for breakfast or snack, grandma always has some in her house or you make some to share with your friends!! It's a popular treat good at any time!!

General tip for people who have difficulty with leavening agents not working or tasting weird, try out the box angle food cake mix. Its VERY potent stuff, helps your cake rise amazingly and barely affects the flavor. Use sparingly, a few spoon fulls go a long way.

Baking Powder/Soda also have expiration dates when it comes to their leavening abilities (usually about 6 months after opening) so replacing them on occasion if that's what you're using them for is also a good idea.

I'm a Greek-American living in Greece and for a fact we have the best olive oil on the planet!!! I've baked cakes with olive oil before and I am soooo going to make this cake as well. John, not sure if you'll read this, but I saw your recipe, and immediately pursued this wonderful moment of traversing through making this cake. Its exquisitely delicate flavor between the lemon and olive oil is divine. Then, with that crystallization of sugar, it gives that subtle crunch, and finally, it all comes together to give it that 'Je ne sais quio.' That you for this fabulous recipe. Just made it and the whole family loves it, I cut up and froze some to mix into olive oil ice cream with pistachios. I always know your recipes are going to be perfect!
