We have to send out a huge thanks to Craig and Shelley Niesen who were terrific guides through the Black Hills of South Dakota and the Badlands. We had a great time traveling with them. Please take a few moments to take a look at Craig’s KZfaq channel “Craig Niesen Photography" at the link below and see his version of the photography opportunities in this area. kzfaq.info

Shawn and Corinne, you both came away with excellent compositions from Badlands National Park. I wish that the conditions would have been better for all of us, but they weren't as bad as I've seen. Thank you for sharing. Peace and Safe Travels.

Craig - Thank you. Actually, other than hot, I thought the conditions were ok. The Badlands just made us work for it. Again thank for being such great tour guides. Take care and bye for now.

Looks like a very interesting area and a place where morning light (and often less wind then too) would a plus for photography ... can you walk down into the bottom areas here??

Hi Colin. Thank you for the comment. Unfortunately, access is very limited. There are a few places you are aloud to walk into Badlands. Take care. Bye for now.

Hello. I shoot B&W in 8x10+. So, I need a very high contrast time of year when the stripes in the rock formations are at their most strident. Is there a time of year you would recommend for such images? Usually images are best after a series of rains. (what you do with traditional film is add a red filter--like a B&W #91 deep red to add midrange contrast, and really darken your skies, and then shoot full sun. If you blow out your highlights, you develop N-1 with less agitation). Your pictures, say, at 5:10 don't show the lateral striations, and the shadows should ideally be deeper. Any ideas on best month to visit for high contrast images with lots of lateral lines?? Glad you all had a great time! Thanks.

You seem to have a pretty good grasp on what you need. I would typically pick a winter month where there could be a little rain in the air. Generally, I would probably pick something like late February or March. Alternatively, if you don’t mind the heat is try to hit the area during the monsoon season, usually in mid to late August. Good luck. Shawn and Corinne.
