@Storr, I kid you NOT, but for the last 3 years, when you go through the drive-thru, they say it's broken. One of these days, I'm gonna lose it! I think they just lie about it, because the machine has to be broken down at the end of the night shift and cleaned and nobody wants to do it! Actually, if you really wanted to do something, would be to call the district manager and complain, or better yet, write a letter.

That zipper locking thing, I "discovered" this phenomenon in the late 1960s as a kid, I can't believe that it's not common knowledge.
@deemueller6470
@deemueller6470 3 жыл бұрын
Also using petroleum jelly can keep the zipper from locking properly. In the 70s, the bleach caused a reaction on the metal of zipper so it was hard to zip/unzip. Mom put the greasy stuff on and it wouldn't stay locked. I had to zip them up all day long. That night I had to use degreaser on the zipper and never had the problem again.

The one with the old door lock was a life changer! We moved to a new house a few months ago that has one. We thought the door was broken but it works now!
@vladkola8436
@vladkola8436 4 жыл бұрын
The old door lock is a common function still used in residential/apartment buildings and it has nothing to do with bathrooms. They have a swivel spindle inside which allows one side to spin independent of the other so that you do not lock yourself in. If you put in a solid spindle in there and lock it you will not be able to open the door from inside.

Every apartment I lived in in NYC has that button. pre-war buildings, brownstones, project buildings, even nicer modern buildings. it's common amongst New Yorkers to say "make sure the button's pushed in and the door locks on your way out" to kids or house guests.

A little Easter egg found in all cars made in the last 60 years. Usually located beside the steering wheel there is a short stick that, when pushed up or down turns on a blinking light that tells other drivers you intend to turn or change lanes. While required by law they often do not function properly in BMWs because of their notoriously flawed electronic systems.

Those 18" glass "smoke baffles" in floor openings (stairs, atrium, escalators) are not intended to limit smoke propagation, but to concentrate the heat from fire to set off the sprinklers that are typically around these openings. Once the sprinklers are set off, they form a curtain of water around the opening which reduces the spread of fire.

the dots on the edges of the window aren't there to "prevent glare" or "provide a smooth transition from black to clear"! they prevent the glass from shattering due to the black border being more absorbant of the suns rays. since glass changes size in high levels of heat, the ability of the black border to absorb more sunlight than the clear glass causes a vast temperature differential over the none black areas, the dots warm the glass as well, but the smaller they get the smaller the impact on the temperature of the glass does as well, this effect allows the glass to enlarge less abruptly, preventing the glass from shattering

@markk3652
@markk3652 3 жыл бұрын
The pipes on houses are more of a vent to allow for air to enter the plumbing system of your home. This prevents vacuum lock in your pipes when water goes down any drain. You may notice on very stormy windy days, the water in your toilet bowl moves a bit on its own. This is caused by the pressure differential of the wind on the roof vent to the plumbing system. And yes, it does stink on some days.

@justforever96 3 жыл бұрын
@@Tehpox That only applies to coats that have a lanyard in each pocket. You usually find them in one pocket only, and in warm weather clothing as well. Related equipment, but not the same thing. I suppose one could clip both gloves in one pocket, but I have them in the side pocket of my snowpants, for example. You can't fit gloves in that pocket. It also has a quick-detach, which is only useful for keys and cards. Basically, one can clip whatever one wants to them. But give me the old-fashioned mittens-on-a-string-running-through-the-sleeves any day. Never understood why everyone thinks those are only for little kids, it's a brilliant idea. I'm constantly loosing gloves and mittens. And they make special lanyards now that clip to each mitten, so they can be removed and worn without, and so you don't need to wear specially knit pairs of mittens connected together.

#19: the glass around ceiling openings and stairwells are called draft stops. Their function is to keep heat from flowing around fire sprinkler heads, and detrimentally prolonging their operation. Also, by keeping heat from spreading, you keep fires from spreading faster. Which allows time for evacuation and first responders to respond. The smoke thing mentioned is just a cool byproduct of these devices.

Sadly I have to back the video on this one. The gaps are not just on the bottom of stall doors, but go up the sides too so you get a half inch gap even when the door is fully shut. Public toilets had a lot of problems with homeless people making them a home, or people to do things they don't want you to see in. This has effectively stopped it being used as a drug den/napping place.

The main thing I learned, this channel doesn't always give accurate information. It occasionally presents false rumors as facts. The wine corks was a false explanation. Given the fact that corked wine bottles are intended to be stored with the cork facing down, to insure that the wine bottles don't leak air into them. Not to allow air in. When the wine steward pops the cork, he hands it to the person ordering the wine. This person then squeezes the cork to make sure it is properly moist. Which means the bottle was probably sealed during storage.

True. Not for air exchange at all. Cork with one side wet with the bottle laying down will maintain the seal for a very long time. There are now other methods that will keep for longer than cork, but with very good wine keeping it for a very long time verses a very very long time has limited value, since you probably aren’t going to be around to drink it.

@@sleepy1697 They wouldn't need to crawl in and unlock the stall if it wasn't so easy for people to crawl OUT after locking it. Most stalls have a special "key" that fits into a slot on the outside of the door to unlock it. It's designed to fit a certain tool, but it's not hard to figure something out that will turn it. They aren't really locks, they are just to discourage random people from barging in. They put the bottom gap there mostly so little kids can't get somehow trapped, or to prevent people from jamming people in stalls as a "joke", but it's not a law, not everywhere anyway. But in the "fact" he was actually talking about was the gap around the doors, which let people see glimpses of the occupant.

In my medical training (and it was mentioned in at least one CPR class that I recall) I was taught the thing about the hole in pen caps. All this time and until today since I had noticed the hole was not present in all brands & types of pens I believed that this was a joke ... also thinking that the miniscule hole in the caps was in fact too small to keep an individual from choking to death. Now having given it some thought I am thinking that this may be true. Perhaps the hole would be large enough to keep the choking individual from passing away but maybe not large enough to prevent long term damage due to insufficient oxygen saturation. Curious now I am off to do some research on the subject. Does anyway out there have any additional information on this? Thanks and greetings from Salem, Oregon USA.

I'm thinking from a Nurses view point: I can see the hole being big enough to benefit a child but not for long. But hopefully Resuscitation starts within the 3 minute mark & Oxygen can get around it or EMTs can try to get it out. For an adult, it wouldn't completely block anyway. My opinion is keep those kinds of pen caps away from small kids. As for Adults...there's Darwin's Theory?

In australia we had bic biro's with a full cap till the 70's, when suddenly the tips on the lids disappeared.

Because, the hole in the top of the pen cap also prevents the the cap from resisting removal or replacement on the pen due to presdure deffierential, I argue that the tiny single hole on the old Bic pen design is not present merely as a safety measure. By the way, has anyone noticed that the later Bic Biro cap increased the air passage by introducing multiple openings?

The small holes in the lollipop sticks are used as an airway so that if a child unintentionally chokes on the stick, they have a chance to be recovered

I've heard that explanation before and I use to believe it, but this explanation makes way more sense. That hole is to freaking small

2:55 I thought those were for winter gloves to attach to the jacket, letting less cold air in.

Why would someone attach gloves to the inside of a pocket thinking it would let less cold air in?

@@greatdiosghosties2762 so you dont lose them. With kids its real easy for them to lose them. And the gloves usually have a hook to attach to.

@@lizchechak7919 That's not what he was asking. He was asking why this would "let less cold air in". The hooks would be for not losing the gloves, they have nothing to do with letting less cold air in...other than by not losing the glove, you keep your hands warm.

When you look at a plane window look close to the bottom middle and you'll see a small hole. That hole is there to protect the window from breaking. The window has multiple layers so If something strong enough penetrates it, that hole serves as a barrier to prevent the window from shattering completely to where you are bound to freefall
