one thing ive come to realize in my own martial journey; i identify predominately as an Axman and its the weapon i feel most comfortable with and it just "called" to me from the start but my biggest issue was so many of the sparring videos and drills i saw with the Axe the Dane Ax in particular made it look so STIFF and rigid and while i get it to an extent i couldn't shake the idea that "their fighting against the weapons innate form and themselves to a certain extent" then i did some reading in the old manuals and discovered something interesting Polearms are also called "STAFF WEAPONS" which immidiately had something click in my mind and as i watch staff drills and techniques im able to apply them to my own axmanship and my fellow HEMA enthusiasts have commented "how the hell do you fight with an Axe like that?!" because thanks to wonderful people like you i was able to realize its just a staff with a dedicated chop chop bit on one end to increase deadliness XD thank you so much for the beautiful videos

This is it!! Short staff that reaches just around chest height! Although sa you've said in your other videos, the moves can be used regardless of the weapon, but it's still great to see you wielding the version I have available (wooden mop handles). Thank you! And favorite color is black. 😁

Green. Love the short staff work too. Took a break from Kali after I hurt my forearms, but this staff work is a good return. This is a lot like self directed physio for me.

Nice thing about the short staff is that it keeps distance from your attacker, and it being longer the impact is stronger from the velocity and extra speed. Plus it can be used to block, deflect, and lock limbs. Can be used as walking stick to defend against coyotes while taking the dog for a walk.

Thanks Paul, I depend on my short staff for both mobility and protection, as I look like a vulnerable target these days. I've had to use it at least 4 times in the last 2 to 3years against multiple attackers, due to Halfway houses in my area and one on my street these are dangerous offenders, released early due to covid. I also have to walk my dogs late at night again due to covid and their lack of socialization. I Have a degenerative spinal condition, and the forced vaccination I got up here in Canada has made it much worse, so I haven't been able to do much for the past year, however, the short staff has been a lifesaver, and I can't use walking sticks anymore, But a double looped sling with a piece of leather to help take my weight has worked beautifully, the vaccine really wrecked my wrists. The leather sling addition doubles up too, when aimed at their eyes it flicks out just great, without doing any real harm and saw the last two off and back indoors, so I could get back home with my dogs safely, and their not dogs you would really want to mess with being a pair of Great Pyrenees, but as they may be targeting my dogs as much as myself, the staff works beautifully even with all of my neurological damage, so real life tested!! Many thanks for all your years of Instruction, hoping I can get back to training with my double swords again and Espada Y Daga Drills.

I love polearm techniques extremely useful and a very underestimated weapon. Over all the weapons to use in a survival situation a staff is inconspicuous useful to carry things including yourself and you can defend yourself and when it breaks you can find another. Only thing about the staff is you should always carry a sidearm like a short sword, knife or shield etc

A short staff is also very easy to carry in plain sight in all the jurisdictions I'm aware of. Not many people will bat an eye at a hiker with a stick and a knife.

Nice video for me thanks as I carry one of these out of necessity every day, so thanks for that. My favorite color is Red. I too look at old Treaties on the use of the Scottish Broadsword and double-handed longsword. Any more instruction on using this weapon would be great thanks.

Just occurred to me. some of these movements ,super imposed on my mind or something, overlayed now Some of the meaningless bull shit movements of kata ,karate ,tae kwon do etc make some sense some way... A whisper of something.. I think now some of those sets of movements would make sense if some one had a spear or staff in their hands etc... it is one of the reasons i totally rejected the practice many many yrs past.. No one ,not one would or could tell me why and what all those movements were for..Each and every one of the movements... 11.3.2022 Thanks for a good solid, graceful set of movements...

again, this is a "modern" invention. There was no short staff in Philippine martial history. This was Inosanto's innovation. There was no historical Filipino martial arts system until guys in the USA systematized "modern". Thanks to Bruce Lee, it got off with this marketing strategy. But there was no Kali. What existed prior to the 1970s was escrima from the Spanish "esgrima". And this was basically fencing for the common people. That is why the terminology was in Spanish and the numbering system is from European fencing. Because it was fencing. But thanks to Inosanto it became a "modern" martial art. There are schools that copied the Karate kata system too and called them sayaw, which is funny. Because there was no dancing in fighting here except on barrio fiestas (the dancing I mean). The question is, was there a true historical martial way in the Philippines? Unfortunately, there are no historical documents to show this. There were warfares of course, and war implements such as bladed weapons, armors and shields but there are no records to show that they were systematized. Additionally, there were no "Filipinos" in ancient times as the islands were governed by small polities with their own "kings" or rulers. "Filipino" came from King Felipe II of Spain and therefore a term used by colonizers.

What’s wrong with evolving and systemizing? The world moves forward into the future. Why do you view this as a bad thing? Evolve my friend. 👍🏼

Actually, my point is a lot of FMA schools are claiming historical lineage, which is of course false. I have no problem with evolution and systematizing a curriculum. My only beef is when people claim historical, ancient lineage. FMA schools are also using common Bisayan words and claim them to be “arts” when they aren’t. I am not saying not to learn new ways, what I am against are false claims and wrong historical attribution. I want schools to be honest and not just focus on marketing. And I have evolved. I have studied too just like you.
