In the recent Integrated Review’s Defence Command Paper, the Ministry of Defence laid out plans for “investment in a new medium lift helicopter in the mid-2020s will enable a consolidation of the Army’s disparate fleet of medium lift helicopters from four platform types to one; including the replacement of Puma.”
Leonardo is gearing up to offer its AW149 multi-role medium helicopter for the emerging British Military New Medium Helicopter requirement, following news that the U.K. Ministry of Defence is to launch a competition to replace the Royal Air Force’s aging fleet of 22 Puma HC2s, which first entered service in January 1972.

@@jt5765 It was the Canadian experience during the late 70's / early 80's operating their Sea Kings, from their Frigates that directly led to AW101 Merlin. But post Cold War, their price scared them, and their Maritime Patrol variant of the Merlin, was cancelled. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AgustaWestland_CH-149_Cormorant Instead they ordered a variant of the Sikorsky S-92. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sikorsky_CH-148_Cyclone I read somewhere recently that, there is a redeployment of Canadian SAR AW101 Cormorant. They have been moved to the most Easterly and Westerly bases, because of their overwater range. Also set to have a flight moved to the High Arctic region. So it's possibly, this will lead to a shortage, and could lead to a follow on order. **** Shame that the 2 French built Assault Carriers LPH, that were built for Russia (now owned by Egypt) weren't bought. (I think it was the cost of stripping out the Russian, equipment that put them off). Canada will certainly need something like this, with likely Russian & Chinese aggressive behaviour in the High Arctic, and the real likelihood of a fast passage to Europe via the Bering Sea from East Asia.

@@thomasfromswindon7609 the Merlin or AW101 was jointly developed with Agusta and the Lynx was a joint venture with Aerospatiale. The Royal Navy will also need some of these for the CSAR mission as well. With the operational Merlin HC4's to be just 20. 10 per Squadron. And the remaining Airframes to be cannibalised for spares (probably the ex Danish Air Force HC4A's). US Navy, usually has 4 USMC helicopters on board their Carriers to do the rescue mission. With so few Merlin HC.4's that is not going to be possible. The Merlin HM2, can't possibly be used in that role. And no matter how much we shout at the RN/MOD/Gov, that they need to have at least 36 Commando Merlins / 12 Crowsnest Merlins / 36 Maritime Patrol Merlins (plus 1 of each for Qinetiq to do continuous testing, improvements in new systems & weapons) , they will not shift on new orders. And with the British Army Air Corps, Leonardo AW159 Wildcat AH.1, unable to operate as an Ambulance, due to all the battlefield ISR kit inside it's passenger cabin. I can see a lot of these being purchased. **** I thought the RAF, was only going to operate the Boeing CH-47 Chinook Helicopter, now.

It'd be amazing if the MoD would order some new 101's for CSAR role. Norway's order is nearing completion and Italy have a CSAR variant operating that was built in Yeovil so the aircraft is designed & ready to build pending parts lead times. AW149 looks to be a very important & capable airframe for the future which is actually new when compared to the black hawk which is based on a very old although improved airframe & the issue ridden NH-90.

@@jt5765 The British Army Top Brass, now say whatever the USA has we want. They really wanted, 70's tech Blackhawks. NH-90. together with the Tigre attack Helicopter, is the reason, no one really wants Germany for a partner. The German Government, will not pay for Spare Parts or for ongoing R&D. Which is counterintuitive to German manufacturing industry experience since 1946. The TTH variant is dreadful. And both aircraft are often grounded due to parts availability. See Australia, buying the Apache, to replace the Tigres. Which will probably be sold spares.

@@madsteve9 The Korean Military really wanted to extend their Wildcat order but politics got in the way. UK & Italy have a closely tied military industrial complex at least on the rotor craft front. It'd be a pretty shocking decision on the UK governments part to purchase an overseas produced aircraft when they have a "homegrown" option that ticks all the necessary boxes. Apache & Chinook overseas acquisition is semi understandable as UK doesn't have competing designs. If UK government want to continue having the capability to produce & maintain their own rotor craft they need to support their own manufacturers.

That'd be one of the dumbest decisions that could possibly be made ever, firstly because the UK already has plenty of tech legally through it's partnerships with EU defence projects through it's go to company BAE Systems alongside the fact it's the largest Defence Contractor and most experience defence company in Europe, 3rd most in the world, the UK is also currently buying billions of pounds with of equipment from EU countries, if the EU did something stupid like requiring us to build them in the EU, we'd just cancel the contracts and all those jobs in Europe would go, because nobody would replace the amount of equipment we buy, we're expected to buy more Boxers than Germany, even though it's a UK-German cross company making it. They also know that in a few months a new defence project will come a long and since the UK spends more on R&D for defence projects than France and Germany combined, they know that without the UK throwing in money they'd have problems, especially when you consider how the UK was the ones who mainly funded and developed the Typhoon and how the UK and Italy did the majority of the upgrades and equipment development for it. The Germans are literally using the Brimstone as the weapon for the Typhoon... developed by the UK. It's nice and all to throw around GDP and some unrealistic dream, but at the end of the day. The UK is massive in the defence industry and the EU knows it, why would they screw over themselves by doing something which would align the UK more to the US and lose them thousands of jobs whilst removing them from selling to the Americans which they do by partnering with BAE Systems.

Would make more sense to go with Airbus for the replacement given that the training assets are airbus. It would reduce some of the transition to type as well as some other benefits.

That's not a military grade helo, by the time it's soldier proofed and fitted with all the things needed to operate in hostile austere environments its performance will be halved! Just stop fecking about and just buy more Merlins, a platform designed from the outset for military use. 🤷🏻‍♂️

@@DefenseMilitaryReport - 👍🏻. The only military helo I've ever flown in that actually seemed designed with troops in mind, seats that didn't squeeze you into a pretzel when you had your kit on, vibration damping so you didn't feel like you'd climbed out of a tumble drier when you got off it and acoustic engineering so you weren't deaf the second to got on it! So all good reasons why the MoD will go with a much inferior militarized civilian platform 🤦🏼‍♂️

That helicopter can be fitted for SAR, Combat SAR, special operations, support to ground forces and attack within hours.. that’s more than a military grade helicopter, it can be easily adapted for every type of mission in an extremely low amount of time.. that’s probably why the UK bought it, far more modern and superior to the Merlin
@JammyDodger45
@JammyDodger45 3 жыл бұрын
@@raptor2-40delta2 - the UK hasn't bought it, the tenders are still out. You can't fit out a Helo for multiple roles in a matter of hours, this isn't Lego. Nor is this a military platform, it's a civilian one that will be developed into military applications. In every way an inferior plan to the Merlin.
@raptor2-40delta2
@raptor2-40delta2 3 жыл бұрын
@@JammyDodger45 it was literally designed to carry out multiple missions.. just because there is a civilian version doesn’t mean this one wasn’t built exactly for the military, the Merlin it’s just bigger, the AW149 is more advanced, more reliable, can perform multiple tasks and takes less time to prepare
