In this amazing trip, we take a tour of Rochester, NY and explore its history and great attractions. We begin the trip at the Great Lakes with the beautiful Lake Ontario. We visit the center of Rochester and get a glimpse of the waterfalls of the Genesee River, the High Falls and Lower Falls. We dig into the city's photo-optic history by learning about Kodak, and make our way to the Downtown. In Rochester's downtown, we visit the Strong Museum of Play to experience some of the great history of play, enjoying endless toys. The tour of Rochester ends at the Erie Canal Trail. I'll see you On Tour!

The setting of my Upstate videos was the University and main theme, Erie Canal. The cities themselves were added stories. University of Rochester, UAlbany, University at Buffalo, SU, and Niagara University were the back drop since this took place around back to school in the fall. It was meant to give an homage to the great schools in Upstate, which are some of the best in the country but also have a history of their own, the historic connection via Erie Canal and the waters surrounding the area like Niagara Falls. Couple all that with brief history of major events/accomplishments. If you get a chance to look at other videos, I try to subtlety connect the areas while giving each place its own identity. Thank you for the feedback

Its a horrible place to live. I don't even go back for family... They visit me where the skies are blue, the sun shines and people have hospitality no matter your race... Can't say the same for Rochester, Buffalo or Syracuse one of the.most segregated cities in America... You don't even want to know what happens to black people at supermarkets in Buffalo. The whole region is dying but I'm sure there are worse places like Haiti

Very nicely done. My hometown where I spent most of the first 30 plus years of my life. I've been gone now for over 30 years and only get back to visit occasionally as I still have close family and friends there. It was a fabulous place to grow up, downtown has changed a lot and believe me when I was a kid it was like being in Manhattan. It was a wonderful midsize bustling city. I still love my hometown but I hate winter which is what I'm in South Florida lol. Again, very nicely done!

I hear ya. I was in Florida earlier this year researching homes. I live in Northeast Pennsylvania and get a tremendous amount of snow. All these areas are beautiful in the Spring-Fall and we love making our way to Rochester and Lake Ontario. But when Winter hits, the mountains turn black & white and the atmosphere becomes gloomy.

Pretty much the same story here. Left in 1994. It has changed a lot. I lived near the lower falls when I was 13. Climbed around all over the place in that gorge. Back then, there was no memorial or park extension down there. It was just a dirt road and a grove of trees by the falls. A lot of people used to 'party' and hang out in and around those falls, there were many tragedies. Probably why there is a memorial now, to warn people of the dangers of those cliffs and falls. I had a close call myself once, fell about 10-15 feet, had the wind knocked out of me. But I was 13, being dumb with my dumb friends. Lucky I survived that age.

@@JoseOnTour It was the winters that drive me away from Rochester. I had enough. But I went west to Oregon. I'm actually further north than Rochester now, but I deal with only a few inches a year now. But they don't have the equipment to deal with it in Oregon. And they are anti salt on the roads.

Great job, Jose!! One minor correction, the railroad that crosses the Genesee at the High Falls was the New York Central RR, not the Lehigh Valley RR. New York Central went east-west, the Lehigh Valley came into the city from the south, along the east side of the Genesee River - in fact, their station is still standing, and was (maybe still is?) the Dinosuar Bar & Grill!

Excellent work with all the details of Rochester. I have lived her all my life, and learned a few things through this video. There is one thing I would add as a must see while in Rochester. The Rochester public market. If you stop there, you must stop at Juan and Maria's empanada stop. Truly has become a part of Rochester.

The great Lilac Festival (flower city - not for Flour) Park Avenue, our rich sports (Rochester Amiericans Hockey 62 yr old) The Garbage Plate (look it up) - You missed a biggy. Susan B. Anthony home. Great job! I didn’t know about that Toy interactive museum. I used to live up there. House was on the lake. Take steps down from our back yard and there was the lake, House wood flooring quite cold in the winter months. On warmer school days, brother and I walked home and if we had enough money, would stop at Abbott’s. Think we stayed in the city for a couple years before moving to the suburb of Penfield. Music lessons in East Rochester and roller skating at Sharkey’s. One or two trips each years to the Strasenburgh Planetarium. Taking friends and family to Midtown Plaza. Tours/visits to radio station, WBBF.Spouse to House of Guitars when last we visited. It’s been many years but someday soon, we’ll have to make another visit.

I lived there for about 4 yrs around the turn of the century and have nothing but nice memories of it. Even the ridiculous snowy winters were fun in a quirky kind of way. There are rarely snow days for kids in Rochester schools. The Spring to Fall is so nice there. Scenic. A mid-sized city with a lot of things to do in or around the city. Nice people. Pretty inexpensive (Except the taxes, which are insane) The canal he's on is technically not the canal built by Governor Clinton in the early 1800s.That version used to go right by where the abandoned subway is. The version he was at is the Barge Canal, now renamed the Erie Canal, which was the last gasp bigger version of the Erie Canal, as it tried to stay relevant with railroads, built in 1919. It took the routes out of the downtown of the big cities like Rochester & Syracuse, sort of like how interstate highway beltway routes did for cars later on.
@JoseOnTour
@JoseOnTour 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for this background about the city. After I filmed Albany and Lockport it became really challenging to find remains of the original canal across Buffalo, Syracuse, and Rochester to film my series. I’m glad I was able to give it some history. Rochester is great in Spring through fall especially with the lake so close. The waters by the subway were almost dried and had seen better days when I filmed this. Hopefully on my next trip they’ve cleaned it up.

He commited suicide and his last words were " i have gone all that i wanted to in life, so why not end it and have it over with, and he did! Dont forget about the Eastman School of Music and theater in Rochester, it still is running to this day! For employing 90% of the people in Monroe County and 66% of the people in the 3 neighboring counties, and to make big money working there all of your life, was like winning the jackpot on powerball !! And it was non-union! He treated all of the em0loyees so well, why did they need a union?? They had all they ask for and more!! As a full time employee, kodak would allow 1 paid day a week to go to the company school to learn how to use kodak products and equipment, and if you wanted to borrow the equipment, you could at no charge either, as long as u brought it back, and everyone did!!
