AMAZING Transformation of Antique Desk Chair | Furniture Restoration

This weeks video was chosen by the people, for the people. I conducted a pole letting viewers pick the piece of furniture I restore for this video. The winner was this Desk Chair, which turned out nicely since it will pair well with the typewriter desk.
The wood was cracked and the metal swivel and rocker were rusted and worn out. With a little TLC I brought this chair back to its former glory.

I have to agree with some of the comments. Make your videos between 25 to 35 minutes long. If it's in the 10's, not long enough, if it's over 35 minute long, it's too long. You know Short Attention Spam Theater. Otherwise, funny, good shots, nice work.

Great Video! The quad shot near the beginning was a cool feature! And like others have said, we love rust removal! Watching 50-100yrs of rust come off is very satisfying, please show it if you can! What a GREAT restoration. I can see you sitting in that chair in your high-collared black business suit with wire rimmed glasses, reading something as you rock back and forth. You did a wonderful job restoring this chair. Awesome!

Excellent workmanship - thank you. I have one of these old office chairs I rescued from a long-ago workplace, and it's been hanging out taking up space in my basement shop for decades now. I've long wanted to restore it, and your video has given me the information - and the inspiration - to finally do it!

Loved it! I'd have gone for a Tung oil finish, but the poly is probably more durable.

I use Tung Oil a lot but figured the poly would be more durable for a piece this old.

Финиш 👍👍👍👍 Одно только печально - ролик очень короткий... Не показана работа по восстановлению металлической основы и роликов.. Ну и в конце надо было сесть на реанимированного😅, как в самом начале ролика... И прибавить кадры "было - стало"... Такая шикарная работа 🎉 и так коротко показана...😢

Finally someone who actually restores furniture instead of just sanding and slapping on a coat of cheap paint. It's amusing those who.do such heinous acts then pat themselves on the back for their efforts and ability.

I’m not 100% sure. One hint is that all the screws are slotted and not Phillips. Phillips weren’t invited until around 1935. Doesn’t tell me the exact date but kind of gives a ballpark estimate.

That wood looked super dry. I would've let the pieces soak in water for a few days first.

I used rust remover and then a brass bristled wheel on my drill press to clean them up. I cut the footage of that because I thought it was boring to watch.

That screw wasn’t coming out. I actually used two different types of oil. Not just the WD-40.

I was actually not impressed with the editing. Seems that more time is utilized for the editing rather than the restoration. Because of this I did not get to see a lot of the actual restoring and reassembly of the piece. Focusing on dramatics is not what I'm here to watch, I experience that enough in the work I do.

That’s fine. I’ll try to include more of the restoring and assembly in the future. There are a lot of restoration channels on YT so my spin was to make it more entertaining and comical. Not necessarily a how-to guide.

You're making this old mechanic crazy... Rather than using the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch, why didn't you use the appropriate size screwdriver along with the WD-40??? Using a screwdriver that is too small is the number 1 reason for a stripped screw head... smdh... That screwdriver blade was half the size of the slot on the screw... Use the appropriate tool! 5/10 😑 I'm not impressed From start to finish, you used the wrong size slotted screwdriver, way too small for those screws. None of the screws were firmly & evenly seated after you reinstalled them. Adding sawdust to wood glue weakens the glue substantially. You made 2 weak glue joints on the seat... Furthermore, adding sawdust to the glue did not hide nor disguise the glue joints, which it seems to have been your intention. Hide glue would be a better adhesive for you to use because it's easier to remove in order to correct your many mistakes. Go to AT Restoration to watch a professional furniture restorer. You can learn a lot from Ahti.

All valid points. I just ordered a full screwdriver set and hide glue. I was making do with what I have. I don’t have 30 years of restoring under my belt like AT does. I just started and learn something new with each restoration. Hopefully, one day I’ll impress you.

@@restorationrhode Thanks for acknowledging my comment. I do understand that any type of criticism, whether constructive or not, is a bitter pill to swallow. Because you weren't defensive & took my criticism on the chin, so to speak, I believe that you will continue to learn & improve at your craft. If you could hear the criticism that I received as a rookie mechanic you'd be close to crying. (Really!) I look forward to future restorations coming from your channel.
