After I retired from the Army, I was briefly a high school history teacher, before becoming a space museum curator. When I taught, I did use Sabaton songs to illustrate my lessons.

I cannot hear this song (either Sabaton’s cover or the original by Motörhead) and not get emotional. Not ashamed to admit that either.

For an added bit of historical context; The quotes regarding an entire generation of young men from towns and villages being wiped out is from the “Pals” battalions. A recruitment incentive introduced at the start of the way to encourage young men from a local area to all sign up together so they could be placed in the same unit and fight together, side by side with your friends. An extremely tragic unrealised consequence being that when one of these battalions went into action and suffered horrendous casualties, then an entire town and village would then have seen all of its young men die. A tragedy of war.

There is a lot of Easter eggs in the song here are a few: the car with the driver but no passengers is to represent the assassination of Arch Duke Franz Ferdinand and his wife that kicked off WW1. The Airborne soldiers are from their song Screaming Eagles. The officer with the eye patch is another song called the Unkillable soldier. The biplanes flying next to the B-17 are the Night Witches. The B-17 is from the song No Bullets Fly. (Correction on that, it’s a Lancaster, appreciate the comments on the correction) The Roman soldier on horseback is from the song Winged Hussar. Another WW1 soldier with a sergeant rank is Sgt York. From the song 82nd all the way. The woman coming from the alley is from Lady of the Dark. So much more is in the song! it’s amazing to show everything in there.

They added 2 years to their ages. 16 year olds lied about their age, saying they were 18. The British needed bodies, so they took their word. There were soldiers in WWI ,as young as 12 years old. The cello over the end credits was played by Tina Guo, she has worked with Sabaton several times. As people have stated, this is a cover of a Motörhead song. The two guys standing in the door opening at 4:30 are Mikkey Dee and Phil Campbell, the drummer and the guitarist of Motörhead.

My great uncle was 16 when he enlisted to fight in WW1 at the Somne and at Paschendale (price of a mile) and he died 8 days before the end of WW1. The song was mainly filmed in and around Black country in West Midlands my family's home town!

I did some researching and found that all the names of the soldiers, knights and Spartans in the end were real people. Many of the soldiers were Medal of Honor, Silver Star, Victoria Cross or Croix de Guerre recipients. The soldier pulling himself out of the mud, at first I thought he was a member of "The Smoking Snakes" (Força Expedicionária Brasileira, FEB, nicknamed Cobras Fumantes), but doing some more research with the patch on his shoulder as well as his helmet, that's Sgt Henry Johnson of the 15th New York National Guard Regiment, aka "The Harlem Hellfighters". Medal of Honor recipient and recipient of French Croix de Guerre avec Palme, France's highest award for valor. The Medal of Honor was awarded to him in 2015. Sgt. Henry Johnson is "one of the five bravest American soldiers in the war." Theodore Roosevelt Jr. in his book "Rank and File: True Stories of the Great War" The Asian soldier with the cocked-hat, that's a Nepalese Gurka named Havildar Gurung (per the credits) who earn the Victoria Cross in the Burma campaign off WWII. Sgt Awal Nur, who did a secret mission over the Himalaya. Lt. Audie Murphy, Sgt. Alvin York are both medal of honor recipients from WWI (York) and WWII (Murphy). I also notice a soldier with the Croix Lorraine on what looks like a French flag arm band, meaning he was a member of the 'Forces françaises libres' forces in WWII. Doing some reading I found out that a large number of French colonial troops from territories such as Chad had joined with the 'Forces françaises libres'. I suspect that soldier is Lt Comba, but I can't find anything on him. As I've been working my way through the names listed in the credits and found another one: Private George Stringer, Manchester, Awarded the Victoria Cross at the Battle of Es Sinn in Mesopotamia. Capt. Dobson, 1st Canadian Infantry Battalion, Killed on 9 July 1916 in Flanders.

This song was written by Lemmy (rip) in Motörhead after he saw a documentary from the WW1 on TV. Lemmy was kind of a doublenature, vocalist and frontfigure of Motörhead, the definition of a badboy, and at the same very well-read and polite. Great reaction of a great song with strong lyrics. Most swedes use rolling Rrr when they speak english. Even though english arent our mothers tongue most swedes are good in english, but speak it are something different. 😊🇸🇪

Floor Joined her first Metal band who Dutch, aged i6 years old, They Were called (After Forever,) for 12 years before they Dibanded. Floor then started up her own Metal band who were called (Revamp) for just over 7 years, then Floor was asked to Join Nightwish in 2013. Now FACT, Floor Jansen is 6ft and bit tall in her stacking feet, When she has her stage, high heel boots on, she is F 6ft 5 inches tall. Now her Husband is Named (Hannes Van Dahl), he is the drummer in Sabaton, he is the one with the long Blond Hair, and he is 6ft 6 inches tall, in his stocking feet. Besides the verse that gets everyone (...and I fell by his side & that's how we died, clinging like kids to each other...) the end where the different Soldiers are getting out in front of the crowd, going forward & walking off together & then vanishing REALLY got me.

the part where they get to the verse where they're talking about the two friends dying together and calling for their mother, this actually happened to a veteran that was interviewed. he survived, but his friend didn't. the vet said he remembers his friend calling out to her until he slowly but surely got weaker and colder until he died; calling for his mother the entire time. needless to say, the vet didn't like recalling that memory. also, this wasn't the only battle of the somme. they actually needed another attempt to take the position they were fighting for...and their were nearly just as many deaths.

Sabaton did an amazing job with this Motörhead cover both making a tribute to the original, to all soldiers in war and still making it their own 😀 Both Hannes ( Floors husband) and Tommy are REALLY tall. I had to go on the internet to see what their actual length is and from what I can find Hannes are 6,3 and Tommy is 6,5 ( keep in mind it is from sites stating facts of artists not from an “official” source .. but that is the heights I’ve seen mentioned in comments too) so Tommy is a little taller but they are both just shy of 2 meters tall. I find it a An interesting contrast that Tommy has that majestic presence, positive personality and beautiful high pitched voice all at the same time

I like how Sabaton put their own spin on this song and made it about soldiers from all of history, not just WW1 like the original. Most of the footage is still of WW1, but sprinkled in with other wars, both ancient and more contemporary. Sabaton is a Swedish band, so ofc they had to include our own history in this, with some Swedish Carolean soldiers sprinkled in (the drummer at the beginning for example). On that topic, you should check out songs from the "Carolus Rex" album :)

He survived through blind luck: he was wounded, and while being treated at a field hospital his own father (who was also wounded) saw him and blew his top. Then he wrote to his wife, who wrote to the War Office with evidence of his age, and they pulled him out. He never spoke of his experiences. Let's raise a glass to Lemmy, to Birmingham (birthplace of metal), and to lost sons.

Fun fact Most of the troops in the British army at the time during ww1 were under the age of fifteen years old and the youngest number I can recall was fourteen who died during the battle of Jutland when his warship was sinking and that he remained at his post helping the wounded as well as his duty to the very end and died with those who were unable to escape, although the real terrifying part of a sinking ship isn’t the slow death due to hypothermia, but for the poor souls who were still trapped inside of their metal coffin as the ship they once called home, slowly sinks below the icy cold depths of the Atlantic Ocean, all the while small pockets of air still remain as sailors who were trapped inside their rooms slowly suffocated to death, in the cold dark abyss with nothing but their thoughts and fears to accompany them into the afterlife. Sorry for the depressing comment but unfortunately not everyone were lucky enough to escape and survive a sinking ship and unfortunately not many would be as lucky to be killed instantly than to slowly face death.

I think that Hannes is taller than Tommy. From what I've heard, but I could be wrong. I'm still in the process of accepting the fact that Tommy is leaving Sabaton...😢 He will be with them on their US tour in a couple of months. April-May I think.. One of my favorite Easter eggs in this song is that one of the last lines goes "and now there's nobody remembers our names, and that's what it means to be a soldier" and then every soldier that appeared IS named, IS a specific soldier from history and often with their own Sabaton song telling their story as well

There is a beautiful ecru coloured convertible that pops up occasionally in the video... this is the very pale horse that conquest rode in on with war and famine and death in it's train. This is the car that Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and his (morganatic) wife Sophie Duchess Hohenberg bled to death in on June 28th in Sarajevo. The spark that directly touched off the Apocalypse of the Old World. The "One foolish things in the Balkans" that would touch off the next Great European War as Bismarck predicted 20+ years before the events. It's both disturbing to think about in our very "early 20the century-esque" world and awesome to see these little details, left without explicit explanation, as proof to the level of historical knowledge that Sabaton has risen by now. Lemmy Kilmister (bass & vocals) of Motorhead wrote '1916' for the album (of the same name) in 1991... it was a tribute to the casualties of World War I. (The late) Lemmy was an avid reader and would spend off-hours on tour reading history books... Many recall Lemmy as someone who drank, did drugs and gambled his life away, but he was a deep individual who was a rock n roll fan and a dedicated musician & songwriter... He also collected historical artifacts of war like knives, medals and artifacts from World War II years (People accused him of being a nazi, but he hated that ideology... He collected those artifacts for historical value) I highly recommend u watch the 'Lemmy' documentary movie that was made during his lifetime. '1916' was a perfect song for Sabaton to cover... 🤘🤘Motorhead members Phil Campbell (guitar) and Mikkey Dee (drums) appeared in this music video (if u recognize them 😁) Sabaton also did a remarkable cover of the song 'Kingdom Come' by Manowar. Motorhead were a heavy rock band that was credited w/ inspiring the hyperfast thrash metal scene of the 80's... but they did not get the success they deserved for decades... They were doing the double-bass drumming and shredding guitars since 1979. The classic Motorhead line-up from 1977 to 1982 (Lemmy Kilmister on vocals & bass, Phil 'Philthy Animal' Taylor on drums and 'Fast' Eddie Clarke on guitar) created some memorable records like 'Overkill'... Sabaton did a great cover of it, and have the Motorhead members with them as well as the flag. Lemmy was also from that area, hence another reason he wrote the song. A good tribute to "The Lost Generation"

The video features reenactments actors ranging from the Roman Army to WW2. The female solider in a Soviet Union uniform is a throwback to The Night Witches a video about the 588th all female bomber squad who wreaked havoc on the Nazi Army a great video and song by Sabaton.

At the end of the song, the living stop, and ghosts go on to history.

The woman in uniform stepping out of the shaded alley.. she's a representative of all of the women in uniform from the world wars, because we tend to forget the women that faught in the wars. But Sabaton never forgets and keep reminding us of those girls in the trenches and front lines.

Especially your Sabaton reactions, I can tell Ms. Donna is possibly the closest generation to metal and rock music followed by Kathy who is possibly near my generation. To see Lulu enjoy metal and history just warms my heart. I have nieces and nephews her age and it is so difficult to get them into metal, rock and much less history! I am a trained anthropologist and historian and an avid fan of metal and rock music, I am 44 I am an "exennial" too young for GenX too old for Millennials and definitely out of touch with GenZ! This is a really beautiful tribute to Lemmy from Motörhead that wrote this song originally. You can see the two surviving members from Motörhead in the video and they also march along with the photo of Lemmy who passed away a couple of years ago. The video is also filled with references to a lot of Sabaton songs. You can see soldiers from all time and from all the world, because the life for a soldier is universe and timeless. The song is about the battle of The Somme. The most horrific battle ever, as you could see in the description in the end of the video. The cello part is arranged by the fantastic Tin Guo that Sabaton worked quite a lot with. You can see her performing with Sabaton in the live video for Swedish Pagans at the Woodstock festival. That's my suggestion for another song from Sabaton.

What's always interesting to me is how the number of casualties from World War 1 battles like the Somme with its slightly are seen as horrific, as they were, yet then you have actions like the Battle of Stalingrad, where between 1.9 and 4.1 million Germans and Soviets died in a battle lasting only a month longer than the Battle of the Somme yet with between two to four times the number of casualties, that many people don't seem to be able to compare. To me, it showcases something special with World War 1 that World War 2 just generally didn't have. Futility. The Somme was an inconclusive battle. All the British and French had managed to do for the loss of 420,000 Brits and 200,000 Frenchmen was gain 6 miles of territory across a 16 mile front. Stalingrad was a decisive defeat for the Germans and decisive victory for the Soviets, undoing all the gains the Germans had made in 1942 and effectively killing any chance they had at capturing Russia's oil fields in the Caucuses. Yes, 2-4 times as many men died in Stalingrad but they died FOR something (the Soviets stopping the German advance and if the Germans had won, a massive propaganda victory and a chance at Soviet oil). The men at the Somme died for some soggy ground that had little real importance by itself. Just something interesting.

I have to say this is an amazing video for many reasons. Besides the poignant story, it also serves as a tribute to the song's writer, Lemmy, of Motorhead. As for your teacher Mr. Betts, perhaps you could suggest he give Sabaton a listen, and incorporate their videos into his lesson plans. Sabaton has a history channel which goes into greater depth on the stories behind the videos, and is presented by real historians.

Honestly? Had I, for some odd reason, become a history teacher, I'd start each lesson with the song fitting for the lesson, and ended it with a mini quizplaying the song on low in the background. The time of the song is thw time of the quiz.

So - when are you gonna react to the original version? It's hardly representative of the legendary Motörhead (of "Ace of spades" fame), but an amazing testimony to the genius of the late great Lemmy. (It's the title track of Motörhead's 1991 album.) And obviously the obvious choice to cover for a band whose theme is songs about the two world wars!
