Amazing Vocal Techniques - How To Belt And Hold Long Notes - Sustaining High Notes - Ken Tamplin
Hey Guys,
I wanted to share with you my experience on how to correctly hold a singing note (or how to hold a high note).
I have seen so many bizarre explanations on this important subject and yet from sources that neither really sing them selves, or display anyone doing what they claim is legit.
In this video, I physically demonstrate long notes myself, at varying degrees of my range, to display actual application on how to hold a note.
As I mention in the video, it can be kind of deceiving and here's what I mean.
I see internet comments (particularly from the SLS community) "you already know how to breathe... so breathe..."
This is an asinine statement.
Tell that to a runner, an olympic swimmer, a mountain biker, a scuba diver or even someone doing yoga.
They all have different disciplines for breathing and what is required to achieve their level of activity.
It is no different with singing.
For those that really understand the concept, we don't want to breathe like we speak.
We want to breathe like we sing. BIG difference.
When we speak, (especially when we do it without good diaphragmatic
support) we release a considerable amount of air. (the diaphragm is the main muscle for inhalation and exhalation respiratory response.
When we understand how to compress that air in the lung and glottis, we can use the diaphragm as a sort of "sling shot" to push air. (I call it the "snap" of air)
When we learn to conserve this air, this can be extremely powerful tool in holding a singing note.
As I mention in the video, vibratory cycles are also very different throughout the spectrum of range in the voice.
Lower vibratory cycles require less energy (this is true), but in order to achieve that same volume and resonance as a high note, (because the cords are vibrating slower), they require MORE air to move the folds at the same velocity (volume) than that of a high note (which vibrates much faster).
This doesn't mean we can't hold long "low notes." What I am saying is that in order to hold a low note at the same volume as a high note, it requires more air.
So this is why it is a bit deceiving: It is actually easier to hold a high note when compressed correctly, than a low note at the same volume.
Now, everyone's range is different, and a low note to one maybe at the higher end of range for another. So this is an over simplification, but I wanted to give you an over all view of how this works.
The key is learning how to manage and control that air with good open throat technique.
I hope you found this information useful.

Voluminous high notes, nice work Ken. This was the right information at the right time, funny how the A.I. thinks I suck at vocals, lol! Right before your lesson I mentioned that I Am a bass baritone full voice and Google must have picked this out for me. GOD is great and you are one of these miraculous teachers of virtuosity that unlimited access to the Kashin Library has made available. I Am inspired by you and all the great singers at KTV.academi Have a great weekend!

Actually that G isnt that hard for everyone to hit the thing is how you hit it.. if you are willing to give anything and even lose your voice for thoose notes like I do, I can tell you that is wrong and in worst case you lose your voice either for a short period of time or forever, except you stop when you check that your voice needs a pause the damage will be less

You should tell that to adults not kids, its a lot easier for kids, I'm a Baritone 15 year old and can hit that note in clean falsetto with little effort and no tension at all

Just amazing. I actually learned about open throat when I was very young trying to sound like Elvis. I didn't know to apply it to other things until I watched your videos. Just like 'ping'. It didn't dawn on me what you were talking about was something I did while trying to sound like John Lennon or Sebastion Bach. And now I'm consciously trying to apply it to other things. There's something I do while trying to do Steve Perry (and, believe me, I have a ways to go with that) that feels like a combination of compression and epiglottal manipulation. I'm thinking your course must be amazing. Like I've been saying, I'm trying to figure it in with all my other expenses. In the meantime, however, I'm loving your videos. You are one amazing teacher

E2/F2 - F4 Chest to mix A4 with compression and belting C4-F5 falsetto to headvoice Ive trained my voice for 2-3 years with your help and some others that I trust I sang at my old school every morning from 1-9 grade, but it was first in 9. grade I started to begin with distortion and screaming and I could sing in falset and some other things, but you have learned me a lot like belting better, compression, opening the throat, distortion and so many other things I´m new to compression so my range will get better with time, but I´m not done learning at all, but I have come so much further and I´m thankful for your help you know what your talking about no doubt SRY for Grammar mistakes :D

7:55 develop open throat tech first before glottal compression So throat is relaxed and sound is open not constricted then can train to cut back the air 8:55 falsetto more breath than head or chest Even then can still holding w glottal compression 9:40 using glottal compression to shape cords to make stronger falsetto Not using more air for more volume

Imo absolutely no one is more qualified to teach singing than Ken ! Man you kill all the songs you cover and sometimes I get such chills hearing you...and I don't remember getting such chills hearing the original artist doing those. Not sure I would say you are singing it better than the original artist or not, but there is a substance behind your voice. Maybe even something not in the actual hearing spectrum that can be heard with human ears. Idk maybe I am just bias because I am partial to your style who knows, but never the less you deserve a mountain of credit for all your hard work that it took to get your level. I'm still working at it myself and not just dreaming about it. Been investing a pile of money into supplements as you have done and been noticing a huge difference in the clarity of my own voice with the use of alpha lipoic acid, co -Q10, resveratrol, two types of vitamin C, green tea in the am and white silver needle tea @ night. Not to mention all the different enzymes and herbals that reduce the inflammation and mucus. Pretty sure I had some scaring or nodes that are now healing thanks to your advice. Now my vocal exercises are getting more fluid w/ less effort than before. Muscle memory is starting to take form.

This really is terrific information. I've been noticing in rehearsal that my ceiling tends to lower toward the end of our setlist, especially when we save the Stayley/Hetfield/Kurt stuff for last. It never occured to me that I could try using resonance like an "amp", and (atleast for the meantime) let the mic do some of the heavy lifting instead of straining over the monitors. Because I can definitely achieve the same compression without pushing so damn hard. Thanks for the tip and thanks for being so generous on your channel. Borderline undermining the business side with all the free stuff just makes you genuine as all hell man. Be looking for me as a student in the near future 👍

Up until this video I didn't think those insane Steven Tyler notes could be learned or taught. I thought only a handful could do it and with native talent. This is proof that hard work breeds high rewards if you really want to get there. Honestly, you blew my mind!!! Also love the Rob Halford bit too. That's just as insane, in a good way❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Ken, every time I watch one of your videos, I learn something new...you are the best teacher!!! I especially loved this video...you are an amazing vocalist...I mean **seriously amazing!!!** I recently discovered that my vocal range spans over four octaves (nearly five!)...I am a 'soprano' but can sing from an A2 and go up to an F#6. I never had a clue about my vocal range until someone at my channel asked me what it was...it's probably why I can cover so many artists out there! Currently, I'm working on 'Fire and Ice' by Pat Benatar...hopefully I can do a decent job...she is beyond amazing!!! ❤❤❤

Yes, Shauna, when we set the bar high and cover artists like Pat Benatar, we automatically have to be on top of our game. Nothing like a little challenge to make us step up to the task!

Love your lessons! They are by far the best lessons i've come across. My goal is to get that awesome distorted voice you have at 6:42. You know, the Chris Cornell/Ronnie James ish kind of vibe. But i realize it takes a LOT of practice.

@@kentamplin Thank you for helping me! I really enjoy your videos, since you really make it more clear and understandable than many other vocal coaches (although the messege is the same correct one - so I have been with some good vocal coaches). I will probably buy your course (the greatest version) but right now I'm prioritizing getting my own home studio so I can produce my own music and jingles etc. I also just want to say that you give me inspiration to keep at it, even though I am 32 now. But if you can keep on growing like you do and sound better and better, I think that it is possible for me as well. I really enjoy that hope it restores in me, and I am very thankful for that. Appreciation from Sweden :)

Dang Ken!! Rockin' it bud!, You could easily take over for Foreigner! Very nice! I'd like to see some "Evergrey", Tom Englund's vocals are so diverse and the falsetto is soothing. Rock on Ken! 🤘🏻😎
