In English it's called 'kerfing', each cut is a kerf. Where I am working at the moment, a piece has been kerfed to go round the base of the rounded bottom step of a staircase, looks really good.

When I was a little kid, my dad built a spiral staircase that went 3 floors for a huge house he was building. In an atrium, free standing, from the floor to the master suite. I remember him being proud that the handrail was a single piece of wood. I wonder if that's how he did it. I vaguely remember him using sewer pipes to build a very long steamer. There was a long-ass tent, too. No clue how he made it perfectly helical. I'll have to ask him about that sometime.
@freshstat1csnow3 ай бұрын
he probably just steamed the wood to make it more pliable and then just bent it into the helical shape, still pretty cool though

You are so skilled at what you do and you never seam to give up.great videos.
Thank you very much for taking the time to do this research for us. I am very grateful. What wood were you using? Would different timber allow different results? I have read that yellow pine or Ash are very flexible.

Wow I had the same idea a few days ago and then this video shows up. Thank you very much. May I suggest using a router with a jig and a tapered bit. It will leave no gaps in between the kerfs.

They do those cuts when they make circular outdoor decks so they can put the wood on the outside to trim it. That is cool though and yeah circular saws are scary😮

A better tool for this is a radial arm saw, which allows the wood to stay stationary, and the blade to move over the wood to make the cuts, totally control over the precision of each cut. Also, if you moisten the outer cover of the wood, it will expand, and you can stretch it further without breaking.

Здравствуйте , мне действительно понравилась Ваша техника сгибания и есть реальное применение Вашему методу . Такое как изготовление деревянных поручней на лестничные марши .
@sindorqurbonov9607 Жыл бұрын
