@@spade3779 it's a very good aircraft. But the Tomcat is superior in air to air capability. It's faster, carries a bigger payload, and it's a dedicated air superiority fighter. The Super Hornet is primarily a ground attack fighter with some air to air capability. The truth is BOTH planes are necessary, and both should still be in service. And both are beautiful aircraft.

It may look cool but was a nightmare to work on over 100 maintenance manhours for every flight hour, twice as many parts as a Super Hornet that only needed 8 maintenance manhours for every flight hour. I'll take the Hornet in a heartbeat.

You should have grown up with the F14 super tomcat 21, too. Unfortunately, corporatism, politics, and special interest groups prevented that from happening, forever neglecting you of what would've been an awesome childhood. St21 would've had mach 3 speed, thrust vectoring, new more powerful engines, the latest ram, upgraded and more light weight architecture. It would've been the most dominant interceptor/air superiority fighter to date, exceeding even the F-22 sans stealth.

I'll give the S-3 but the Prowler was a maintenance nightmare 90 maintenance manhours for every flight hour compared to the growler's 8 maintenance manhours for evey flight hour.

They should’ve never retired the s-3. Most of the airframes have 11000 flight hours left on them, and the helicopters really can’t replace them.

The Tomcat will always be my favorite but the Hornet/Super Hornet has been one of the most successful fighters fielded by the Navy in the last 30 years or so. One other aircraft that should get some mention is the EA-6B Prowler. The last of them were retired from the the US Marine Corps earlier in 2019 and the last Navy units were retired in 2015.

@@jesspayne5548 UH-1Y Venom. The Iroquois was the official designation of the OG Huey. The UH-1Y is heavily based off the OG Huey, but with the necessary upgrades to keep it relevant in modern combat. A similar thing happened to the AH-1 Cobra, and that's where the AH-1Z Viper came from.

The Navy uses F/A-18 E/F for aerial refuelling while out at sea when the pilots can't get their birds down before running out of fuel. Same role as the now retired S-3 Viking. Awesome video!!!!

Yes it is, It has to be the Tomcat - saved the best for last because (Forget the combat record which makes it RESPECTED the array of weapons which makes it feared and the handling and "mo power baby which makes it such a darling to fly) it the most beautiful of them all. No One Comes Close with its both broad and slender design and swing wing design so futuristic it captures the imagination that it's more like a star ship fighter in the universe than a plane. (in my opinion)

I was stationed at NAS Whidbey Island. It's home of the EA/18 Growlers and Prowlers. I was attached to the VAQ-132 Scorpions in 2009 and our squadron was the first expeditionary squadron to receive the new Growlers. I remembered the beginning of the end for the Prowlers, which by the way should've been part of the list of retired Navy planes.

im sad the A-6 retired it was such a cool and capable airframe and would have been amazing even today with modern upgrades, and its capability where not fully replaced the navy still lacks a tactical bomber capable of bringing bombs along a 1000nm mission radius

In the surveillance and recon section you forgot the E-2C Hawkeye although you do have it in Command & Control, it really fits into _both_ of those categories. For aerial refueling, there is (or was at least) a variant of the A-6 that would be used to refuel strike aircraft when you're out of range of a land based tanker. There will likely be a Hornet based variant for carrier based refueling operations.

This is just me talking out of my ass but it’s not so much a variant but a standard A-6 (now F18) fitted with oversized fuel tanks instead of bombs/missiles that have a deployable hose out the back. The only modification to the planes itself is a very simple control module in the cockpit that uses the same hardwiring as the arming and firing for the weapons that normally get mounted there. An air craft carrier is a crowded place and it wouldn’t do to have a plane that could only refuel taking up space

John Doe that’s ok, my expertise is even more thin and outdated. My father was stationed on the Nimitz in the 80s (medical section) but my older brother was OBSESSED with planes, even became an airline mech on the civilian side before switching to medical equipment

@@MrSheckstr no, they had a specific refueler based on the A-6 it was the KA-6D that got most weapon equiptment deleted, got biger tanks and together with 5 external tanks could supply about 20000lbs of fuel using a integrated refueling chute. they also had normal A-6 / A-7 / S-2 / F-18 do the job by simply loading up a 300gal buddy refueling store (external tank with the refueling hose in it)

MH-60R is the one equipped with ALFS dipping sonar and sonobuoy launcher, Sierra, and Hotel variants focus more in search and rescue, vertical replenishment, and use in special warfare situations such as insertions and close air support. Should be noted all variants are capable of and are used for search and rescue, and cargo transport.

@@patrickradcliffe3837 The F-16s the Navy has currently are not the N models. They are regular F-16A/Bs, the same as what the Air Force had. The F-16Ns were retired in 1998 after finding cracks in several bulkheads, and the Navy did not have the resources to fix them.

Their 14 units are not part of any squadron nor are they ever armed and used for any live action. Like the video mentions, they're only used for training purposes as an adversary...as their agility and maneuverability make them difficult targets to down.

The my-60s was actually a transport and fire support chopper. You’re getting it mixed up with other variants. It can carry 8 hellfires and four door gunners.

Okay you are partially right about the P3 Orion. The P3 was developed to hunt submarines, that's was it main function then later on for surveillance.
