How to use Amazon Echo Dot and mix in a source and hook it up to your existing wired whole home audio system. And do it on a budget! Check all my Echo multi room audio videos.
I am not an audio professional so there may be better ways to do this! However, I have speakers all over my house that are wired up to volume control knobs, that are all wired to a distribution panel in my basement. Meaning, you can hook up a radio and play that source all over the house if you want. Well, I don't want radio, I want Amazon Prime Music or Tune-in, or Spotify, or Pandora, etc.
I used the 1st Gen Echo Dot with audio out and wired it up to my distribution panel. I did that by using pre-existing wiring in the house that was meant to send a source from my main TV area. I'm lucky that it was wired that way. BUT NOW, since Amazon enabled multi-room I can move that Dot downstairs and ask my kitchen Echo Show to play music on a group. Add that dot to a group and it will do the work for you outputting audio to your volume control knobs and eventually to your speakers.
If you don't have an amp handy try this one - amzn.to/2yv5EAS I'm not sure how many zones it will push though.
I did this in my previous house too! Check that video here - Amazon Echo Dot hooked up to whole home audio

That is really cool that you have a rack left from the previous owners, where all the speakers terminated at. I am planning to install a volume control for my outdoor patio speakers. I am also going to have it paired with a Denon dual zone amplifier.

If you have multiple echos in the house you can create multiple groups. You may want to go with Prime Music Family account too. Otherwise, if you want to do whole home audio on a small scale you could look at Legrand. They have some starter kits for multiple sources.

What kind of cable was installed throughout your house that you used to carry the line level signal for the Alexa? Was it cat 5e/6, was it speaker wire, and also is it shielded. I’m wondering if you have any issues with EMI?
@DavidMcCabe

Just normal speaker wire from source to volume knobs, and then to speakers. I'm interested in trying the new amount in out box they will release soon.

David McCabe Okay gotcha. thanks for the reply. did you have any EMI issues since the speaker wire is carrying just a line level signal instead of a speaker level signal? Also what in and out box are they coming out with? 👀

Echo Link - amzn.to/2RMZ5D0 Echo Input - amzn.to/2A6BGpw Check those out and I'm sure you will agree that they will change everything! As for your questions, I don't have any EMI issues but I thought I was going to have line loss but surprisingly didn't. I found if I amplified it and then sent it to the Echo it was way overblown. I have added an amp in the middle and a mixer and need to re-shoot this video. I'll probably get the Echo Input for sure and do a follow up on all of it.

Just ordered my first Echo Dot, 3rd Generation. My house is wired with Speakers in ceiling in multiple rooms with speaker control knobs for volume. They lead back to a central area and eventually tie into my Yamaha TSR-6750 Receiver. I want to play echo music off of my Zone 2 on Receiver. Zone 2 is always on so we can listen to radio. Trying to learn best way to connect Echo to my Receiver to optimize music. I'm not very good at this stuff--obviously.
@DavidMcCabe
@DavidMcCabe 5 жыл бұрын
Sounds like you have it. Connect the Echo to the Yamaha, include it in a "Group." When you ask for music on that "Group," that specific echo will be included in the music output and it will output to the Yamaha. Then, whatever speakers are hooked up to that Yamaha will now have music.

@@DavidMcCabe Seems like you're super clued up about this kind of thing! - My Q is the same as John's above (found through Googling the subject!), but I'm curious to know how/where the microphone needs to be placed from the Echo in order to make this work...?
@DavidMcCabe
@DavidMcCabe 4 жыл бұрын
@@jonsetty7324 Microphone? The Echo has audio output. Connect that to your amp, then amp to your speakers. In the Alexa app setup a group and call it something memorable, include the devices of your choice but also include the one you hooked up to your amp. Use another Alexa device, kitchen for example, to play music. Alexa, play 80's on the "Home Group." Yes, it has to be 80's. ;)
@jonsetty7324
@jonsetty7324 4 жыл бұрын
@@DavidMcCabe Ok thanks, and I've not yet explored the Alexa app; so I presume it's easy to set up WHERE you want the audio output to be sent to; if you indeed have multiple echo devices in-app? However, to clarify I would, for example, initially just have the one echo dot (3rd gen) plugged into the AV receiver (the AVR itself goes into Zone 1 and also Zone 2 [with Zone 2 being split via the similar in-wall speaker control knobs as described at the beginning of this thread]). But my two-part question is: (A) how would I be able to give the Echo a verbal instruction "Alexa do this..." if I'm not in the same room as the AVR where the dot is plugged in via the 3.5 aux? (The AVR doesn't work off Bluetooth so it has to be wired) This is what I mean by the microphone - (e.g. the mic on the echo dot itself to receive voice instructions) and (B) if the 3gen dot has an aux out connection via the 3.5m jack-to-RCA cable at the AVR. Does this mean the AVR always has to be switched on (and to that input source) in order to hear Alexa's response/output? Thanks in advance

Imam I getting this right - this is only one zone isn‘t it? So you have one echo downstairs hooked up to the amp and others in the house just to be able to control that one downstairs echo?

One hooked up to amp. Amp hooks up to speakers throughout house. Created a group called home. Alexa, play playlist on home group. Boom.

Hey David, I have in ceiling speakers in every room in my house and I have 2 of the monoprice 6 zone amps and a monoprice wall control in each room. I need help so that I can make alexa play music individually in each room. If you could help me with this i would be very greatful.
@DavidMcCabe
@DavidMcCabe 5 жыл бұрын
Every room? I would need to put this to paper and think about it. It will depend on the volume control and wiring but you could start with this search - amzn.to/2RLUwcr for some options. Otherwise, an Echo Input or Echo Dot for every speaker group and do some fancy mixing to do a whole home setup? This is where the high dollar boxes come into play.

I have something very similar. What did you end up doing? I assume you just need an echo dot for each room?
@DavidMcCabe
@DavidMcCabe 5 жыл бұрын
@@TxRado You only need one dot that hooks up to your amp and in ceiling speakers. Use another dot or show to request a playlist and use groups to include the dot that is hooked into the amp. Maybe I should do a follow-up.

That boombox method amped the signal higher than I needed it to. I thought there would be a lot of loss over the wire to the basement and there simply wasn't. I'm about to shoot a new vid replacing the Dot with the new Echo Input. Also have moved to Ring doorbell so the Niles Audio interface is coming out.

But that is playing the same audio to all your speakers, multiple grouping would be putting some Arduino Switch in between each line, so that music can be played per the specific grouping or speakers ie; living room, deck, theatre room. I would not want to hear what my son was listening to while trying to watch a game. WiFi speakers would be able to accomplish this
@DavidMcCabe
@DavidMcCabe 5 жыл бұрын
Yup, there are a ton of ways to do this. Multiple Echo's to different zones, or using wifi speakers. This method I show is a simple way to do Whole Home Audio without having to break the bank. If you have an amplifier laying around you can do this easily without spending a whole lot.
