I'm not even sure if this is the kindle I plan to tear down but I kept watching because this is the most thorough and explanatory teardown of any video I've searched out.

@38911bytefree It's called POP (Package on Package). Basically, the CPU has BGA balls on the bottom, and BGA pads on the top. The RAM (special POP RAM) solders onto the top BGA pads. This is done when the boards are populated, it's not a chip level thing.

He hit it really hard, it bled a tiny bit, but the pressure caused it to bubble like that.

@shiftplusone80 I only have a metal spudger, so that's what I used. Plastic one may of course be better (gentler) in some situations. Best to have both.

@samgab Spudgers are typlically insulated so that you can poke around live circuits with them without blowing anything. Dave's is metal and resembles the little stainless spatulas that chemists use to handle small amounts of powder. Perhaps Dave will clear this up and give the brand and model.

According to ifixit.com teardown of Kindle, TI OMAP processor is under the ram memory chip and not the one next to it.

@labradodlenz All audio is done in-camera, no voice overs. I also shoot each clip almost always in the sequence that you see it (saves heaps of editing time). Volume can be variable sometimes because of the different position and difference in relation to the shotgun mic.

Yeah I know, I just wanted to take a look at the reverse engineering, and it wouldn't be a lot of effort anyway =) It's a 5 way switch btw. The Telecasters have a 3way switch, I think.

Small connector possibly balance leads for multi-cell batteries?

You have more guts that I have placing those itsy-bitsy screws out where they could go flying onto the floor. You'd never find 'em. re: the unshielded connector: Suppose they used a robot to "push" the screen buttons of an assembled unit.. Could they place an antenna close to the unshielded spot and pick up some general trash from the connector leads that could be used as a final go/no-go test via spectrum analysis (or some other wizardry)? How come your not doing this from the new digs?

Dave, could you please do a teardown with reverse eng on a Fender strat? I'm aware it might be extremely hard to come by a strat someone's willing to lend you for that purpose, but I took mine apart today to remove some rust from screws and springs and so on, and I was too tired after cleaning up to try my 1st reverse engineering on all the cables that went thorugh to the backside and back to the front. Maybe that kinda stuff interests you, would be really great to see you dissect one. Cheers!

The battery is made by WELLTECH ENERGY INC. You can find that by looking up the UL Listing # E225967 (written on the battery) in the UL Certification Database. Just google "UL database" and type in the UL file number, third result.

Nice work, Dave. That accelerometer placement is indeed strange. Maybe it was sensitive to interference, or maybe heat? Maybe the designers thought they got better or more-reliable input from the user by placing it there? I can't think of many other reasons to string a flat cable all the freakin' way across a device like that. Let's hope the lithium battery was well made and doesn't go boom like the old Sony batteries.

Hmm, Wouldn't it make more sense for the small BGA to the right to be a power management companion IC due to the high density of inductors and large ceramic caps? I know some processors do have the dc-dc converters integrated into the core but I was under the assumption that the TI OMAPs use companion chips for the power stuff and had package on package for the ram. neways, awesome teardown! I love the in depth analysis. Keep 'em coming!

Are they cheating with the battery? 2 times 7,77Wh = 16,28Wh? Or could it be that whoever combined the two cells to the final battery did tests with other currents?
