@@faquueify You know, I've always wondered about that. A few counter examples: when something crystalizes (seems to become more ordered). Gravity will order random matter (I.E. when a star or solar system forms). Then my favorite: life. RNA/DNA will order molecules into self replicating little machines. Even the universe itself seems to have gone from a state of *maximum* entropy (Big Bang, not even atoms formed yet), into the much more orderly state we have today. And theoretically everything could return to that initial state - depending on how gravity works.

As a guy from Nigeria, never in my life have I (or anyone I know) felt like we couldn’t relate to the characters in LOTR because they weren’t our skin color. These books and movies transcend time and multiple generations because of the strong characters, story, and themes. It’s fantasy, specifically a fantasy history of England (or Europe in general). People that look like me weren’t up there for the most part. But since it’s fantasy and it’s about the character’s actions and motivations and beliefs, it’s easy for anyone of any background to find those heroes they relate to in the story. This was an international bestseller long before Peter Jackson made his movies. It was taught in schools and even used for people’s theses in graduate school. The only “modernization” that was needed was better cgi and special effects to bring the fantastical elements to life. And we’ve got that. So I’m afraid I don’t share the SJW enthusiasm. I see a “black hobbit” and I’m instantly disinterested because it seems people are more interested in checking “diversity” boxes and trying to be “edgy” and “modern” more than make an accurate adaptation. No one needs to “fix” Tolkien. There’s nothing to fix. Hobbits, the weakest and lowliest race in middle earth are recognized for their bravery at the end of LOTR and even a king bows to them. Gimli yells “never trust an elf!” in the first movie and considers Legolas a dear friend by the third one. Even Elrond who bitterly states “men are weak” when talking to Gandalf has his faith in men renewed by observing Aragorn and then later reforges his sword for him. What I’m saying is that just because all the characters are considered “white” by the viewing audience doesn’t mean they can’t deal with issues like overcoming prejudice or learning to be inclusive and see the value in other people who may be very different from you. The beauty of fantasy is we can deal with these things without getting bogged down in all the politics and nonsense of our own world, at least that’s how it used to be. The direction taken by Amazon shows more than anything either a lack of faith in the strength of the source material or more specifically, a lack of respect for the source material. It seems these folks just want to use middle earth as a backdrop, a canvas on which to write their own “superior” version of Tolkien’s work. I’m reminded of that cringe-worthy scene from the trailer of CW’s “Batwoman.” She looks at Batman’s suit, which has been described as “perfect” and states “it’ll be perfect when it fits a woman.” She could’ve said “when it fits me” which would’ve been a confident thing to say, hyping up the impression that she has skills to bring to the table and is qualified to wear the mantle. But she says “fits a woman” because it’s about pushing the writer’s gender politics message instead. If they had simply stated that, as the world is diverse we aren’t going to restrict casting to only Caucasian and/or European individuals, but will simply cast whoever works best for the role. That I could’ve rolled with. It would show they were going for best overall qualities in casting selection and are banking on the strength of story and performances ti keep this going. Again, it would’ve displayed confidence in their product, that it can stand on its own merits and add to the rich legacy of Tolkiens works. Instead they highlight their multicultural casting as a main focus. This with their “strong female characters” are supposed to be the things that entice us to watch. This is what they put center stage. That should tell us all we need to know.

*J.R.R. Tolkien to Henry Resnick:* "Rhun is the Elvish word for ‘east.’ Asia, China, Japan, and all the things which people in the west regard as far away. And south of Harad is Africa, the hot countries." I've said this several times but Tolkien based Middle-earth on Northwestern Europe (pre-Roman to be exact), however, there are non-Marachian/Hador (non-white) present within the Second Age of Endor (even the First Age) such as the descendants of the Druedain in Armenelos who travelled with the Edain to Numenor as a reward for fighting Morgoth; the Pygmies (which the Hobbits eventually regress to during the Fourth Age) which Earendil (Elrond's father) encounters in southern Haradwaith in the Book of Lost Tales; those whom the Blue Wizards interacted with being sent by Manwe to Rhun and Harad; Numenorean expansionism within the inner-West, South and East; the foundation of Numenor's greatest settlement prior to Gondor: Umbar in Far-Harad; Khamul the Easterling before he's given one of the Nine Rings (becomes a Ringwraith); Aldarion's odyssey; Sauron's 500+ years in Rhun after the War of Wrath; or the Numenorean bloodlines of Elros (Elrond's brother) who mated with the women of Harad after Eru's destruction of Numenor thus continuing the Numenorean bloodline in Harad for over three long-spanned generations -- the other two major settlements of Elros' kin were in Gondor and Arnor post ~ *Changing the Harfoots to being black of skin was rather silly, more so when they could have put the focus on the Druedain of the pygmies of southern Haradwaith in that circumstance ~*

And yet as an African you openly accepted that the books were great and read it without prejudice. Heck it was taught in our schools (I mean the Europeans had so much influence on Africa, who's to say we weren't forced to adopt the books like all other things). It's weird how sex obsessed the modern film industry is and how utterly nonsensical most nude scenes are. Rarely these moments are impactful, but a good example was in GoT when Daenarys was in a very pleasant and beautiful environment getting prepared as she is being sold by her brother who treats her as nothing more than an object. We see the naturally perfect body of a young woman very nonchalantly, yet my focus isn't at her body as the scene is undertoned by her worried expression and the question of what will happen next. I haven't seen this scene in years, yet I can still vividly recall the emotions and thoughts I had back then. Nudity without sexual tension is something Hollywood doesn't seem to understand, but when it's done right it can have a huge impact.

You couldn't be more wrong about Tolkien's intentions for Lord of the Rings. In one of Tolkien's letter he writes that he always intended to show that no matter how powerful the character may seem, ultimately it was one small act of kindness that brought Sauron down. When Frodo felt pity for Gollum and told Sam not to harm him he set in motion the events that would lead to the destruction of the ring and the downfall of Sauron. That was Tolkien's entire point, that it is the small, everyday acts of kindness that change the world. While it is true that Frodo never heals from the wound he got on Weather Top he does ultimately live out his life in the Undying Lands with the Elves, and so does Sam (although this is not shown in the film). And as Gandalf puts it at the end 'not all tears are evil'. I recommend you read the History of Middle Earth (12 volumes) and Tolkien's Letters. Both will illuminate your understanding of Tolkien's intentions.

Exactly, we non English people can create (and we have indeed) our own stories. We don’t need to be inserted in a Lord of the Rings cast to feel some sort of belonging. The weakness of only women being able to END him doesn’t take away from the fact that she did it. She also snuck away to join the fight in the face of orders to stay behind. Galadriel is literally harolded as the most wise being portrayed, she sees into the past, present, and can glimpse into the future. In universe she was also the only one to not be fully tricked by Saurons disguise, and was the only female who stood tall in leading a rebellion against the people of Valinor so they could escape control. Basically her wisdom, leadership and resilience combined make her strong as fuck. The self sacrifice shown by Arwen giving up immortality for love is heroic and strong, it’s the same philosophy as potentially dying in war to protect your loved ones back home. Your life for love. That’s pretty brave and admirable aswell. Not trying to flame war but you should probably look into it more before you try and take away from how strong those females were. When Gandalf defeats the Balrog and reemerges as Gandalf the White, it was to show the British Isles begin to harken in Christianity. The Dwarves are very obviously based of the Jews. This is one main problem with Wheel of Time, everything looks cheap. Secondly, Wheel of Time has a very detailed story spanning 14 books. The LOTR show, takes place in the Second Age of Middle-earth, which is like 2-3 chapters of the book Silmarillion. This is kind of odd, because that is 2-3 chapters and goes over thousands of years of Middle-earth history (compressed account of events with barely any detail). Silmarillion reads more like a history book, with events and names briefly explained. There is bare minimal dialogue or details on many of the events that happen, so the show runners of Amazon will have to make up a lot of it themselves.

It was unimaginable spiritual, psychological and emotional burden. Sam did not do that and did not surfer through that, it is entarily possible he would sucumb earlier. The fact that Frodo sucumbed in the heart of Mordor doesn't render his nobilty invalid. Tolkien belived humans ultimetly cannot save themselves and will fall without help from God's Providance. Frodo also spared Gollum, which was essential mercy that enabled the destruction of the One Ring, while Sam wanted to kill him. Sorry, but the Wokeists will never win on this one. First, my favorite character is Eowyn, because of how tragic she is. She not only could never be with Aragorn, whom she loved, but she was told she couldn't fight -- and still went out and fought for Rohan anyway. Then, facing down one of the most evil threats, Angmar, the Witch King, he says, "No man can kill me..." To which Eowyn replies, LIKE A BADASS, "I am no man!" After which, she precedes to kill him by stabbing him in the face. Then take Arwen: She literally saves Frodo by summoning a water elemental, then says to the Hunters chasing him, "If you want him, come and claim him!" And finally, Galadriel. This woman knew what the Ring was, was tempted by it, and resisted. She did what Isildur was unable to do, 3 millenia prior. She resisted taking ultimate power for herself or her people. Yet, somehow, that's not a strong woman!? Cate Blanchett, Liv Tyler, and Miranda Oslo all played beautiful, amazing female characters who were strong as hell. They did things no man did, or could, do. Yet somehow this disease called "wokeness" has to invade what was already a top story, top movie, and infest a healthy host because politics. Which most people aren’t, but that’s still not because morality is declining. It just brings out people’s true colours, because being stupid has no consequenses... Hard work tends to force some realism into you, good by nature or not, so you learn your place... There’s a reason hardworking people tend to be more respectable and well mannered. She was still shown as a woman with sympathy and her weak points but I liked how she, Galadriel, and Arwen consistently had a maternal presence to them. None of the "mah strongk wahmens who can kickflip a man". The women were nuanced and interesting like all the male characters. And it's okay if the female character isn't a super strong warrior. @@wubuck79 I dont understand how anyone could listen to an ideology of destoying middle (working) classes invented by a Prussian spy married to sister of Prussian spies boss (von Westfalen) and sent abroad (officialy exiled from Prussia by the verdict of legal court) to destroy workers rights movement in other european countries (France, Belgium, England) by dividing them and then catching his chance in England and living the rest of his life writing books in British Library on the cost of his wife's money? :D That is their "guru of workers" :D

I’m not sure you have the pronunciation of “choreographed” right, but this woke crap needs to stop. No one complained about “representation” in the original films. None of us are hobbits, elves, orks, or whatever.

@@travisbishop782 And just like that. We see why GRRM is actually 100% right in his dislike of fanfiction. It would be interesting to see how many of today's writers spent their early days writing stupid short stories shipping anime characters.

I didn't know Vigo almost died in that fight. The incident that I was aware of was that Vigo really broke his toe when he kicked the helmet in Two Towers, but I'm sure most people know about that one. Vigo did such a great job as Aragorn, and these movies are still my favorite to date. I just feel bad that he had so many incidents during filming. What a king just moving forward with the project in spite of all of it. I don't think anyone would blame him if he had dropped the role after being almost killed in Fellowship. On a side note: Femenists and sjws need to stay away from already existing Ips.

Yeah Viggo really put himself into the movie. A scene he floated down river that got cut, he was pulled under by an undertow. So by that standard a broken toe would have been nothing! And I learned about the toe first!

Story sounded fake, looked it up, is fake. Don't believe everything you hear on YT, most of all from a guy who is obviously winging it when it comes to LOTR knowledge.(I still agree with the core sentiment of the vid, but he got some things wrong)

Fun fact, Viggo wasn't the first choice to play Aragorn either. Russel Crowe and oddly... Nicholas cage (why?) were offered the role, but declined. and Stuart Townsend was actually cast, but was cut shortly before filming started.

Death of our favorite franchises is just another path, one that we all must take. The grey rain-curtain of this woke world rolls back, and all turns to silver glass, and then you see it. White shores, and beyond, a far green country, faithful to the source material, under a swift sunrise.

Every time I hear it mentioned that anyone wants to make a GoT-like Tolkien work, it makes me want to break things. Filth is fine in it's own place, but it does not belong in my Chivalrous High Fantasy. I like viscous violence in my entertainment usually more than the next person, but it doesn't need to be shoved into everything, and if you absolutely *must* shove unnecessary sex into Tolkien's worlds, do so in your fanfiction, and don't demand that I recognize it as canon.

If the story has unnecessary sex I'm going to be really mad. Most good stories work perfectly without sex, I could never imagine a sex scene in the original LOTR so why does it look like they are planning to have some here? I just want to watch the show with my parents man.

We really need to get serious about boycotting these franchises. They are highly destructive and we're not going to get any kind of decent entertainment out of them ever again.

GoT is very much about chivalry - but chivalry as it actually existed, not the chivalry of Victorian fairy tales. But I agree it has very little in common with LotR, even if Martin claims the latter as part of his inspiration.

I just want to add that orcs were way more savage when you actually look into what all they did. I mean think ab it the first dark lord was almost infinitely powerful and he used that power to in Saruman’s words “torture and mutilated” an entire race of creatures with human like intelligence.. so basically the very worst of violent human behavior is what they became so in reality orcs were probably vile rapists and what you would really call a monster. Such as getting sick enjoyment from extensive torture to small elvish children because they hate them for not being cursed damaged and ugly like they are. It’s both sad and scary and to think but extremely interesting it’s such a shame we’ll never get a representation of that bc everything has to be soft and pathetic nowadays
