Candace of The Geeky Waffle attended a roundtable with Slayers writers and directors Amber Benson & Christopher Golden. She also asks Amber an essential question about the trope that her character Tara Maclay is sadly known for.
Slayers: A Buffyverse Story premiered October 12, 2023 on Audible, twenty years after the series finale of ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer.’ The scripted audio original picks up in the Buffyverse 10 years after the events of the final episode. Since then, Spike (James Marsters) has gone deep undercover in LA, convincing the forces of darkness that he’s back to his evil ways. When his cover is compromised by sixteen-year-old Indira Nunnally (Laya DeLeon Hayes), Spike finds himself on baby-slayer-sitting duty once more. While he attempts to track down a watcher for his eager new protégé, their paths collide with the veteran Slayer of a parallel reality where Buffy Summers never existed...a reality where Cordelia Chase (Charisma Carpenter) is the one-and-only Slayer. She needs Spike’s help with a classic big bad terrorizing her world…his old flame, Drusilla (Juliet Landau).

I am almost done listening to Slayers. The story was good and it was great to hear the actors again especially hearing Drusilla and Spike again. However, I was disappointed with the book. It was a bit different, almost like listening to a radio show (or the TV in the background) and so you hear the fight scenes and other sound effects and I felt it was too noisy sometimes. It was still an interesting experience but not sure I will get any sequels. Again, was still awesome to hear their voices again so it still probably worth checking out.

Have you listened to many audio dramas in the past? I was thinking about how this might be the introduction to the format.

Well, I have listened to various audio books and this was definitely different. The audio books I have listened to have basically had them read the book, not actually play it out like a radio / tv show. I didn't like the background noises of it but understand what they were doing. Again it was really great hearing the actors again. I am up in the air with sequels but who knows... IF Buffy shows up, I am in. lol @@thegeekywaffle

Not interested in this 'project'. Buffy ended in 2003 when diva Sarah Michelle Gellar quit on the show. And big surprise she doesn't want to be involved in this either.

7 seasons is a long time. And I don’t think they wanted Buffy back because they gave focus to supporting characters

@@thegeekywaffle Buffy moved to UPN for season 6 in 2001, they were there for only two years and the show was still very popular. So even though the show had been around for 7 years it was only two years and new to UPN, they definitely would have wanted Buffy back for more, probably for another year or two at least. Sarah destroyed that possibility by selfishly walking away. The show had an opportunity for a real second life, such a shame the lead actress wasn't up to the challenge. I think deep down Sarah thought she was too good for the role, she wanted to be free of the series because she thought she'd get all these big movie roles, but she didn't. All she got after Buffy was mainly B movie roles that were only mildly entertaining for the most part. Don't get me wrong, I do like all of her movies, but most are nothing to brag about and are not much to hang your career on. Sarah was great on Buffy, she was a fantastic TV lead in the late 90s/early 00s, but she's simply not an A-List movie star by any means. I really wish we could have gotten 8 or 9 seasons of Buffy, that entire final season and the final episode especially was horrible. I actually thought it was a good ending at the time it came out, but after having 20 years to digest it and watch season 7 multiple times I've seen its many flaws. And wow are there too many to describe here! Joss Whedon could have done better coming up with stories and a season arc, one that absolutely didn't have those extremely annoying and suffocating potential slayers! Who were mostly a waste of space and took over the second half of the season. They ruined everything with their presence and a couple of them were absolutely insufferable, Kennedy and Rhona. Season 7 should have been more about the core characters. Not a bunch of wannabe slayers and a big cheat that gave them all of Buffy's powers in the end! I just don't think Sarah Michelle Gellar appreciated just how special the show was and how important her role as Buffy was at the time. I wonder now if she has second thoughts about leaving after season 7 and ending the entire show. But probably not! She got fame and got paid and she moved on! I guess good for her!

@@Emissary355 "I think deep down Sarah thought she was too good for the role, she wanted to be free of the series because she thought she'd get all these big movie roles, but she didn't." I'll never understand how actors can think that starring in a movie is better than starring in a TV show. I'm leaving out sagas,of course,but...starring in *1* movie will make people forget you far more easily than starring in *multiple episodes through YEARS.* In a TV show you have much more time to make your character grow,to have people getting fond of it and to make it multi-dimensional,HOW can a SINGLE movie(or multiple SINGLE movies in which you play a different character each time),no matter how good it is,be better than that?!?Unless the thing is as an actor you _wanna_ keep playing tons of different characters, but,I mean,if a show is long and good enough(and"Buffy"is!)you get to basically playing multiple personalities _even_ by just evolving 1 single character...I mean,JUST LOOK AT WILLOW!!!@.@ Tell me S1 Willow,S4 Willow and S6 Willow don't seem like 3(almost)completely different characters!! "that entire final season and the final episode especially was horrible." I never liked S7,it's my least favorite of them all,but the last episode is not bad at all as a finale _EXPECIALLY_ if we compare it with how _OTHER_ shows ended or _DIDN'T_ end!>;-[ I like Kennedy,I think she gets far too much hate. #Justice4Kennedy 🖤And Rona was annoying, but she had some points. You need to put yourself in her shoes, sometimes, not just in Buffy's. The main problem with the Potentials is that they were too many and they didn't have enough time to develop and to have the audience to get fond of them.

@@Nicamon Kennedy was beyond annoying, I don't like the way she pursued Willow. She acted very entitled and bratty almost all the time. Then once she and Willow were 'dating' suddenly Kennedy got special privileges. Like being allowed upstairs with the main group discussing strategies while all other potentials were somewhere out of the way, like in the basement or training. Then when the potentials were training Kennedy was the drill sargeant calling other girls 'maggot'! As if she were any better than the rest of them! She was still just a potential too! Then after that one fight Willow and Kennedy had closes the door on Willow basically telling her she isn't allowed in her room for the night go sleep somewhere else. Also while all the other potentials are sleeping piled on the living room floor but Kennedy gets her own room! Sorry but Kennedy was absolutely insufferable! And we have Marti Noxon to thank for creating that annoying character!

@@Emissary355 "Kennedy was beyond annoying"There are *_other characters_* in the Buffyverse who are"beyond annoying"...Kennedy is definitely not 1 of them! "Then once she and Willow were 'dating' suddenly Kennedy got special privileges. Like being allowed upstairs with the main group discussing strategies while all other potentials were somewhere out of the way, like in the basement or training." Isn't that kinda what happens to _every_ boyfriend or girlfriend of the Main Trio?Also...Faith was often not included in the group discussions in S3 and that's part of the reason she became a Villain...now *THAT* was unfair!X-[ Also...would you have preferred Willow&Kennedy to have sex with all the other Potentials in the same room trying to sleep?X-S C'mon! I don't think Xander&Anya share _their_ room with the Potentials,do they? Why should it be different for Willow&Kennedy? Also would you have complained about the same thing if the couple was still _Tara_ and Willow?Because if not,I call this #DoubleStandards!
