- the rummaging-through and clinking of paints and pigments, of solvents and spirits, of pencils and pastels; the systematic opening-up of wooden drawers and pots and jars; the artist's determination to find just the right hue or medium, guided sometimes by noble ideal and sometimes seemingly by caprice
