For those who are wondering, the shape of the object is not what you think it is. It's slanted and curved in a way that looks like it has angular corners from some perspective. Remember the mirror is simply presenting you another perspective to the shape. You can see some hints of the actual shape when he rotates the shape at the beginning.
@Nehmo8 жыл бұрын
I'm too lazy to research it. Please link to something revealing what kind of shape can manage the illusion of the video.
@MarcusLow8 жыл бұрын
I'm too lazy to find something to link too. If there was something like that on the internet, this guy wouldn't be a finalist for the illusion competition. It's up to you to believe if it's real or CGI.
@rdecredico8 жыл бұрын
There is no mirror. It's a composit layed into a matte.
@daveyhi31548 жыл бұрын
They don't overlap; they *appear* to overlap from the angle you're seeing them at. Think about two glasses sitting side by side but at different heights with one closer to you and the other further away. If you looked at the rims from the right angle they would *appear* to overlap. That effect is enhanced by careful shading and shaping of the objects of the objects. Look at his other videos. they are all based around this concept. There's nothing CGI about any of it.
@dockettome5 жыл бұрын
It's not CGI. This is similar to how 3D street art is done. If you own a 3D printer you can download a recreation of this on Thingiverse and print it yourself. It's listed as "The Squarcle".

it's just the object is angled (it isnt a regular cuboid shape), one end is shorter than the other - or something like that. The camera angle makes the reflects appear as circular due to the levels of the object

Pause the video at 0:15. The top edges of the shapes are such that from a rear-facing 45-degree angle, they appear circular. but if you view the shapes from the front-facing 45-degree angle, the top edges present a rectangle shape.

for those wondering how the illusion is done the magic words are, perspective angle. The object is designed in such a way that from two different perspectives it looks different. Artists used the same trick in paintings for centuries to make painted eyes look like they are following you.

The top is cut to make the shapes seen in the mirror. The sides are different heights. You can see it at 0:23
@lourdesvazquez61758 жыл бұрын
There are 2 things to keep in mind here. The original is slanted either towards the mirror and then rotated so it is slanted away from the mirror to give the impression that there are angles in the reflection. That's why at one point the original and the reflection look the same midway through rotation because of no slant. BUT the big giveaway is the shadow. If you look at the shadow the shadow shows that the shape is always cylindrical no matter how it's turned. So, while our brains are seeing angles there are in fact none. The shadow never lies.

Search youtube for: Ambiguous Cylinder Illusion How it Works A guy at Make Anything 3D Printing Channel made a simpler model and showed clearly how the effect is created. Trying to describe it here, though, it is a partially rounded square that has sloping ridges that shift the blending toward a square from one view and toward a circle from the other. Watch his video and you'll see it clearly. I do wonder about the hand movements in this video, though. Several other people have commented on it. The motion in the mirror looks disjointed with the two sets of hands very slightly off. Maybe this is a video artefact, the rolling shutter phenomenon. It sets me off almost as much as the intended illusion.
@ahmadalkhateeb11808 жыл бұрын
+Greg Conquest yeah I saw that video too, but as always optical illusions amaze me
@senshi018 жыл бұрын
The key to the illusion is the point of view. I imagine that it is possible to do that by taking a paper folded in the shape of a rectangle. Then, cut it by looking in a mirror to make it appear round. Do it both sides ( up and down) and finally the edge facing the mirror must be rounded.

It's annoying to see the amount of ignorant people saying "It's the mirror" or "It's two different people" No it's neither it's a circular object that has has been cut to make one side of it rise and one side of it sink to resemble a different shape all together. But when it's on the high cut side it looks circular on the low cut side you see the high cut side poking out this making it look like a diamond.
@Xbox360SlimFan8 жыл бұрын
Stop at 0:15. There you can see the actual shape of the "box". Our brain sticks the unusual form together regarding from different perspectives. Thus the mirror shows always the opposite. (Circle, Box) Imagine this illusion without the mirror, it will lead you to understand the illusion properly.
@timharrod8 жыл бұрын
If you removed the mirror and another person was sitting on the other side, would that make a difference? I ask because there are married couples I would like to break up with this clever device.
@dickdolby82718 жыл бұрын
It has to be seen in 2D to work, otherwise the uneven heights would be far to obvious. Maybe if you had a couple who each only had one eye...?
@dickdolby82718 жыл бұрын
No it isn't. It works because the tops of the shapes are not flat which appears to move them closer to the mirror the higher they are. The tubes themselves are neither round nor square, as can be seen when they are turned. If there was a 3D version of this video, or if you saw it in real life instead of a 2D video then it would be more obvious. It's *very* clever.

@mint73888 жыл бұрын
i think i got it, the "mirror" is actually a video of him doing it previously. and the bottom ones are him mimic-ing the movements with different pieces. if you watch his hands and shadows very carefully youll see that they down match up perfectly. hes essentially recorded himself and painstakingly recreating it with different objects for the illusion. its well done but not perfect as when he tries to recreate the subtle movements of his hand from the video you can see variations he cant simply account for. nicely done

It looks like the illusion is created primarily by the curvature of the inside wall of the tubes. I think the actual shape of these things in your hand is mostly like what you see midway through the "spin" when he rotates the object. Depending on what side you view from, and due to the inner wall of the tube and a cut out angle/slope of the top of the tube, a viewer will see either a circular object or a squared off object. This is just a guess, but regardless, I think the key to understanding the illusion is to observe how it transforms when rotated.

For some reason, it seems like the movement in the mirror lags behind by like 1/5 of a second.

It's just how they're cut and shaped, and the angle of the reflection plus the profile based on the reflection angle. Very cool though.
