I was 14 then. Now I'm just 3 months from 70. Love this song, both the lyrics and the distorted guitar. There's a TV recording of the Lemon Pipers doing "Green Tambourine" that really takes me back. The only one missing from that period for me (YMMV) is The Status Quo playing "Pictures of Matchstick Men." I've never seen that, if such a video exists. What a time to be a teenager!

Too bad the cameraman didn't recognize this. It wouldn't have hurt to have a few more shots of the band members in the back row. Viewers are largely oblivious to their existence until the end of the song. In fact some may have thought they were independents provided by the studio.

Cosmic. But pretty visceral rock, too. The guitar work is impeccable, and great bass lines and drumming. It's too bad the Amboy Dukes didn't have more hits, but there was a ton of great music out in 1968 and Top 40 rock radio had only so many slots per hour.... But this hit definitely put them on the map.

Ted Nugent's guitar isn't even plugged into anything but he's still playing his part and keeping in time for the camera, and kudos to him for that. Lots of these 60's TV shoots the musicians aren't even trying because they know the performance will never be heard, so you wind up with the studio version coupled with shots of the band looking super bored on stage and the editors doing all the hard work trying to make it look passable.

Even as a teenager, showbiz savvy Ted realized the purpose of TV appearances was to SELL THE RECORD. Artists lip-synced because it would have been impossible to remotely approximate a polished studio recording in the tiny confines of a television studio. The song kids heard on TV the night before was the record they were buying after school the next day, a strategy used to great effect by the unlikely Ozzie Nelson, a law student and bandleader years before he was a befuddled sitcom dad and a shrewd businessman off-screen. Ozzie realized a weekly television series was the perfect platform to launch wise-ass-kid-brother-turned-teen-heartthrob son Ricky's career as a singer, taking after his mother; Ozzie met the then-Harriet Hilliard when she auditioned to be his band's girl singer (she got the job). Whenever Ricky lip-synced his latest release at the end of that weeks "Ozzie and Harriet" episode, Ozzie made sure record stores were stocked with plenty of copies in advance.
