Faiz A - OMG John. AMC just said they will no longer play any of Universal’s films following Jeff Shell’s comments on the on demand success of Trolls 2. They really meant it when they said ‘we will not forget this.’ What are your thoughts on this news and do you think this will be permanent? Thanks and have a great day!

Yeah, and you'll see almost all movie theaters be irrelevant in the next few years, so nobody actually cares. More people are willing to buy a movie VOD than go to the movie theater and they're going to find out very soon with the success of all the Universal movies being done concurrently.

Bumbleness Supreme Brady you and Olaf both are complete morons 😂😂😂. If you think VOD films will even make half what they would have with theaters then you just shouldn’t be speaking on films in general because you’re clearly just clueless. There’s a reason why studios have pushed back film after film after film even though it adds to the interest payments on the films, it’s because they unlike you have functioning brains.

"As soon as theaters re-open, we expect to release movies on both (theatrical AND digital) formats." I think this statement was misconstrued and taken out of context. The digital PVOD experience is good for SOME releases but not all, and surely Universal had no intent of breaking any "theatrical window" that was established with NATO. I DO NOT think the statement means "we expect to release every movie on theatrical and digital at the same time." I DO think the statement means "we will alter our practices in the future so that instead of releasing every movie in theaters, we will release some of our content digitally instead." This is no different than what Disney, Time-Warner, Amazon or Netflix is doing currently except that those studios have a subscription steaming service and Universal is talking about a pay per release model. Once Universal's Peacock is released, it will have a subscription service as well and some stuff will undoubtedly go there first. No one complained when "Noelle" or the live action "Lady and The Tramp" went to Disney+ first, and they still carried "The Rise of Skywalker" in movie theaters. AMC knows this and was not saying that "you can't release things digitally instead of theatrically," (because they didn't take it to mean that) they were saying, "we think you mean this and if you do then be warned that you can't break the theatrical window for any single property or we won't carry that property (which is business as usual)." This is the same thing they said to Netflix who wanted to put "The Irishman" in theaters at the same time it became available to stream.... "No, thanks. We don't want that movie." In order to keep their statements brief, each company was accidentally vague instead of being specific in the first place to avoid any confusion in the media or by the other companies they do business with.
@shineko79
@shineko79 4 жыл бұрын
The main issue with the method was such a statement was made without discussion with exhibitors beforehand. The other movies that switched to streaming releases were discuss and exhibitors notified beforehand. This was universal saying basically "we decided that we're gonna release like this from now on when we want to" and circ, they even made a similar comment in March to the same effect regarding Trolls. There was kerfuffle over it being streamed instead of delayed like the other big draw movies were.

I was thinking the same thing. Universal would be crazy to ignore the fact that there's big money to be made if the right release is put out on various formats. Since no one knows when or if people will return to theaters the way it was before the pandemic then studios have to have a plan. For Universal it's a new day.

Here's the thing I think John is ignoring. AMC currently needs the studios more than the studios need them, because AMC is currently $5 billion in debt. They can't afford to give up the next Fast and Furious, the next Jurassic Word, everything Blumhouse has coming. Sure, the rule is that theaters don't usually play day-and-date films, but with AMC falling apart, is Regal or Cinemark gonna look at that and go "yeah we're gonna stand by them as they collapse and not play that next billion dollar blockbuster"? I don't think so. I think this is a huge mistake on AMC's part at a time when they cannot afford to make mistakes.

John, you keep saying that theaters and studos have a healthy symbiotic relationship, but I really don't think they do. Studios seem to go out of their ways to screw over theaters. Taking most of the ticket revenue, strong arming smaller theaters to play their movies on their biggest screens to eliminate competition, bullying if not straight up harassing theater owners; I used to work at a theater and I saw it all. I'm glad theaters are starting to fight back.

It always takes one company to create the trend and I would not be surprise if universal make this a norm and figure it out. They see the potential of VOD and how they can make all the money and eventually cut out the middle man (which would be AMC and Regal). Yes Universal is the only one doing this right now but best believe the other Companies like Disney and Warner Brother is taking notes. When Universal figure the entire VOD game others will follow suit. We seen this with streaming with Netflix (now everyone have their own streaming platform like Disney plus and Peacock), as well We seen this in other industries like automotive industry with Tesla. All they have to do is find new ways to stop Pirating and find a great price point for people just to pay the money without having to feel its too expensive or think/feel to justify the cost that would make people gather together ,make a event out of it with there friends to save money like saving money on a PPV fight. Once they figure it out on VOD i believe these studios will cut out Amazon and Apple as well and just use their own apps and receive full profit. Think about... Disney can use Disney plus and have people rent the new movie for 7 dollars for 12 to 24 hrs then eventually release the movie completely part of the subscription months later. They already have your card on file and with two clicks the movie is yours to rent.

The movie theaters, with the "theatrical window", effectively force consumers to watch movies in their theaters when initially released. This is to maximize their profits at the expense of all those consumers that would prefer (or need) to watch a movie in a different format at the time it is released. This is one of the reasons (together with the exorbitant pricing of tickets and concessions) that I stopped supporting movie theaters years ago. I now watch movies the way I choose to, even if I have to wait longer (which I shouldn't be forced to do).

What most people don't realize is than if theater's don't open by August or September studios will put movies on vod or streaming. And Disney has smaller movies from fox and searchlight pictures and to recoup losses from the last month and a half and coming months. And theaters can't afford to lose Disney.

@stephennootens916
@stephennootens916 4 жыл бұрын
No they couldn't, Years ago the studios owned the theaters, if you wanted to see a movie by MGM you had to go to an MGM owned studio. Than it was busted up with the use of anti-trust laws and that's why you have this odd partnership. It's the reason some people have been asking questions about streaming services that also have studios. Admittedly at the moment we have a pro big business so they might look the other way if the companies that own said studios bought theaters, but that happening is a pretty big stretch given history.

Its 2020, its time for the movie industry to change. Im all for new movies being released as VOD in the same time they are being player in the Cinema. There are millions of people who want to watch new movies but they don't like the "cinema" experience, which can be brutal sometimes. (Anyone sat next to someone who was all the movie on his phone? or sitting next to a couple discussing about random stuff?) There are people who love to go to the movies, and they will continue going but there are also people who don't want to wait half a year to see a movie and getting everything spoiled before they have the chance to see it at home. Without movie studios they can close their theaters and movie studios will survive without cinemas.

It’s tough because there is no cookie-cutter solution. I don’t know if a crowd reaction in a theater will ever top the one I experienced when Cap lifter the hammer. It was so special to be a part of. However, there are about a half dozen movies each year that I wouldn’t invest almost $50 for tix alone to see in IMAX, but I would pay $20 to stream VOD and watch on a high res tv with surround sound 🤷🏿‍♂️.

I understand having bad experiences at theateres, heck, I think we've all had our fair share of that annoying guy laughing, the one jerk commenting, the lady on her phone, or the parent with the crying kid, but in wanting convenience for at-home theatrical releases, and nothing else, I want to know why!?

Honestly it's a hassle trying to make plans to go see a movie if I'm lucky it's playing at a time I can go or even playing near me. who even knows if AMC will still be around after this and I personally like movies going straight to streaming. I saves me money on gas, and snacks. I also better for me when it comes to my time it is just so much easier to just rent it and watch it right in my living room. I believe that as the generation that grow up with streaming we are just so use to the fact that is just so easy and I just always hated theaters. they are over priced and dirty. I only ever go once every few months just to watch marvel movies. I could really careless about anything else I just wait for it on Netflix. Theaters are like car dealerships I hate them both and I want to see it all online. You need to plan your whole day around what ever time the movie is showing and then you run the risk of getting there and not having a seat. this country is a free market and if AMC what's to release movies on streaming and in theaters weeks or days apart they should have the right to do so they own the movie right and theaters are just the stupid middle man. I think the same can be said for car dealers because it seems like they operate the same ripping people off.

With all the distractions at movies now while u try watch a movie, not really sure how many go to movie place unless really wanna see a certain movie before they by chance get it on physical media or stream again later. some or many movies sell out places and on blu ray / dvd or even 4k later. so studios get their money back over time any way possible. if studios know traffic do not always go to movie places to see movies and wait cause the cost to go any, then redo their contracts or deals any to have any movie in movie place for a window of time then be allowd to have it on stream and physical media later. not sure how long it gotta be at places but i read or told some get pulled if any tanks hard by chance to make room for more tickets to better movies any.

Universal and many many other studios have come to the understanding post Covid-19 it might be years before attendance is even allowed to reach a profitable margin and the marketing budget for Theatrical Releases is huge and cuts available profit. Streaming is easier and many studios own their own streaming services and besides the Marketing costs won't probably even be a 10th of a Theatrical Release as they could put the vast majority of Marketing attention online. The Theaters AMC, Nato and more correctly identified what the studio was attempting to do and that was put them out of business so there would not be as many screens available to even display their wares. This is a power play of the highest order but the Studios hold all the important cards. Sure the studio backed down publicly but is my guess they will do what they want any way. The theaters not willing to help the studios kill them put up a public fight but in the end unless the public gets over their fear the studios will win by default.

This is a battle all the movie theaters are going to lose. They're already struggling with lack of attendance normally, let alone how COVID-19 is going to cause many movie theaters to permanently shut down. They shouldn't be having this fight right now. VOD is the future of movies, accept it and move on. You cannot fight change and the inevitably. You can only partner with it and try to survive.

Choosing now, during this massive health crisis, to have a genital measuring contest over theatrical windows is absurd, and looks horrible for AMC and NATO. This game worked in 2001, but I doubt it will work this time. That window will change. Moreover, does anyone really think, that a company preparing to declare bankruptcy in an industry that is in shambles during this crisis, will NOT screen Fast and Furious if Universal decides to day and date it? I don’t think so. Universal should call their bluff this time. This isn’t Tower Heist. These are massive guaranteed hits. Universal has all the power this time. Pull the trigger, rework the system. That said, I think renegotiating to a much better revenue split for the theaters for day and date releases is the right way to go with changing the windows.
