This time we are taking apart and rebuilding a machine that has components mostly from 1998 based around the AMD K6-2 300 MHz processor. In part 1 we go through the parts and clean things up and make a pretty big mistake along the way! Re-uploaded to highlight that mistake.

Got linked to this from a reddit post. Oh man that case, I had one that looked like that but with a speed display in the center right under the floppy drive bays. Used it from a 386 up to a K6-2 300, then sadly it got thrown away when I moved across the country. Oof on the PSU. The S3 cards were great for DOS compatibility but pretty terrible for Windows D3D performance. One good period-correct option is to pair it with a Voodoo or Voodoo 2 card for that but they're pretty pricey these days. You're a bit limited due to lack of AGP on that board. For a sound card, a great option is an AWE64 (came out in 1996). Great DOS compatibility, the value versions are cheap-ish and essentially equal to the more expensive golds. They fixed the hanging note bug that earlier cards had and uses the ISA slots so you're not using PCI. However, if all you really care for is Windows - the Live! is newer and period correct for 1998 but not as great for DOS drivers. I'll sub, waiting for part 2! :)

Thanks for stopping by and watching! I'd love a speed display on this case but I have a feeling this is a budget one that was used in many builds. Several people have mentioned they recognized it or have memories of using it. Wonder if I can source a front panel that supports the speed display hmm... As far as the components you are pretty spot on! Part 2 is in progress and I think your predictions may line up very well with what is going to go into the machine. Thanks for the sub!

I made that kind of mistake with the AT power supply back in the day. One of my tech teachers in Junior high taught me a phrase that has stuck with me ever since, 'Black to Black, back to back.' We all goof some times. Hell I have a board here, that I followed all of the instructions that I could find, but because it was sent to me with a jumper in a spot that wasn't labeled caused the board to release the magic smoke, and that was just a couple months ago. Somehow, I got it to work in the end though. Still scratching my head on that one.

Ohh yeah, learned the black in the middle thing the hard way once...... One tip. If I remember right. The screw spacing on the PS/2 connector is the same at the serial port cutouts, so you can mount the PS/2 connector in the serial cutout.

For a decade, from mid 80's to early 90's *the* colour of a CPU was purple ceramic with gold pins. I still find it a lot more stylish than green PCB with IHS.

My k6-2 system back in the day used an Amptron 598lm-r motherboard. Had it maxed to 768mb ram the cpu at 550mhz. Sadly never got around to putting a decent gpu in it, had onboad sis530 chipset. Later drivers allowed me to set 32mb memory to the chip. It did... OK. Played starcraft (oh soo many hrs of starcraft), diablo ii, Jane's combat flight sim, armored fist, half life, cs 1.6, sim city 3000, anno 1602, shogo Mad, septerra core, tachyon the fringe, and of course emulators. (and many more) Ran win 3.11 through xp on it lol. 3.11 on a 550mhz cpu was hilariously fast. The chipset was pretty stable and having usb (although slow 1.1) made the system useful far longer than expected. I later went to an athlon XP and so on.

Hah oh boy. Thanks for sharing that is one blast of nostalgia with those games! I think a lot of us that are deep in the retro hobby and have access to quite powerful era specific machines forget what that we often didn't have that originally. I played on my 486 33SX quite happily and it wasn't exactly fast but I had nothing else to compare against! Well except my fancy friend with his 50 MHz... Does make me want to try 3.11 on an overpowered system though!

I remember the plastic AT standoffs, always a pain to deal with. That was very common back before the ATX standard, I remember having to assemble baby AT computers that had cases with slots so you have to slide the plastic motherboard standoffs in then mount the board trying not to move any around... ah memories...
@RiksRandomRetro

The noise you're hearing from the optical drive may not actually problem with the motor. Some drives from that era used ball bearings to act as a counterweight against a poorly balanced disc.

Oh my, Rik, I thought I was watching the "Verge" build a retro then lol. If you have some small sockets in your driver kit? One can be pushed over those pesky clips for easy removal and no risk of slippage! That's a proper 9x case that, you can tell by the huge reset button! Always remember.... black to black!!! :)

Hi Rik, subscribed to the channel!! As a Retro Computer enthusiast, you have a lot of interesting content! Thanks to the KZfaq recommendations for showing me this video xD! I immediately caught the mistake on the power supply connector, but I think it happened to all of us, at least once. I did it a while ago with an older 286 board and surprisingly nothing bad happened to the PSU or the motherboard, but man I can tell I was sweating like a false witness when trying again! I noticed you said "Featuring EDO..." like a general denomination of the memory slot? I usually say SIMM or 72-pin SIMM if the board has them mixed with the older 30 pin ones. I have a 486 motherboard that uses these 72-pin SIMMs but it can't take EDO type memory, it only works with FPM modules, so it sounds a bit strange to me when someone refers to them only as "EDO". Can't wait to see Part 2!!!
@RiksRandomRetro
@RiksRandomRetro 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and the encouragement I really appreciate it! Really glad you decided to watch from the recommendation always fun to see new people watching my videos. As for the power supply mistake I redid the video to call it out because I'd like to learn and show as I do so. I don't mind mistakes but I think it's important to leave them in even if it's for nothing but a laugh! And for the memory honestly you are correct I don't think I normally call it EDO just that I had it in my head as I recorded it and then just ended up saying it hah. A lot of terminology to keep straight sometimes and sure enough it stayed in the video without me even noticing but pretty sure I don't normally call them that.

The plastic clips were pretty common in the 80s and 90s, I only started using the standoffs and screws method in the 2000s when they became more extensive. Case design has come a long long way, even cheaper ones.

Modern cases really are amazing as far as how easy they are to work with, something I think people forget. When I built my last modern machine it was a breeze and no sharp edges! I definitely have fun working on these old machines but it's hard to ignore the modern conveniences...

Great Video! I have the same case and similar motherboard made by Matronics(I believe a PC Chips sister company or rebrand) with the AT and ATX setup in the upper left instead of below the ram and the SD Ram and EDO Ram but maxes out with the original AMD K6-300(wich I still have to install sice I have one) instead of the 66Mhz version of the K6-2 like your board supports. Great video and have a good one.
@RiksRandomRetro
@RiksRandomRetro 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! It's really a neat case for the era and seems to have had quite a few variants based on what other people have told me as well. That motherboard must have been rebranded and resold in different varieties as well as I was able to find some variants doing research on it. I will say officially per documentation this only supports K6-300 but I figured I'd try my K6-2 and lo and behold it is running great.

I reckon the computer was originally built with a regular socket 7 CPU and later upgraded to K6-2, which was the fsb66 variant targeting for. I also reckon that the hard drive and memory stick were destroyed for security reasons. Why memory stick? Don't ask me. It was standard procedure at some business places.

So I think the USB controller on that board needs to be detected by the OS. So chances are the drivers are already there but yes something is needed I would assume. If it works outside of Windows I think depends on the motherboard and bios.
