This is great news. We need competition--not two companies one-upping each other on milking the customer. $499 is a great price point for the 7800XT and I hope retail bears that out.

its an awful price. Its a relabelled 7700XT or maybe not even an XT tbh. it's going to be slower than the 6800XT, it's apparent predecessor. why do you think they were comparing it to 2 generation old cards on stage? Because they were actually releasing the 7600XT and 7700 non xt.

I just recently picked up a 7900 XT after switching from an aging Nvidia 1080. I haven't used AMD for graphics in probably a decade, but I've honestly been pleasantly surprised by how well it performs. It takes a little getting used to with the software, but I honestly like it more so than the Nvidia stuff. I went with the 7900 XT strictly on pricing. It's insane to me that I would have to spend over $1000 for a graphics card. I got a water cooled 1080 for $700 back in the day. I spent roughly the same on the 7900 XT and I got equal performance to a 4080 while still saving money. If the pricing were anywhere near reality for Nvidia I would have stayed with team green, but so far, I'm not regretting my decision to go with AMD. Solid card and good performance in all the games I play.

I'm in a similar boat. Only I went from a 2070FE to a 7900XT. It was my first "real" AMD GPU since my last "AMD" one was really an ATI GPU and I'd been on Team Green since. I had "extra" money and really wanted to go for a halo tier card for the first time in my life, but I could not justify a GPU with a comma in the price tag. That said, I have had absolutely ZERO regrets with the 7900XT.

Got my first computer in '92 and it was mid range and cost around $2500. For the same money today, you could get something literally hundreds of times more powerful. Imagine if you could buy a loaf of bread or a gallon of milk or a car or a house that was hundreds of times better than what was available thirty years ago for the same price.

That is awesome. I was running a 1070 Ti right up until April this year when I saw a Radeon 6750 XT at a very good price, so I jumped on it. This is the first brand new Radeon card that I had bought since my 9800 Pro almost 20 years ago. I am very happy with it, along with the semi-frequent driver updates. I just became disillusioned with Nvidia in recent years with their pricing and specs. I'm not at all sorry to have dumped them. I plan to run this 6750 XT in my gaming rig probably until the fall of 2026, by then a whole new system will be in order.

And when I say it's a little too high I mean, that it is a hard sell for me but not an impossible one, I'm actually thinking about it... The 7700 though, that absolutely needs to go down in price, and quite a bit actually... I'm with you on this, in so much that this is actually made me think that maybe I can buy this generation, having said that I would like it to be just a tad lower... The 4070 FE is just £570 (it's usually the same in dollars) and has 200w power consumption while the 7800xt runs at 263w which means that even though the 7800xt is cheaper up front, it'll cost you more long term and as energy prices are predicted to remain high until 2030 in Europe, it means the 4070 is still a solid choice for costs and it can run DLSS 3 which if on could out perform the 7800xt... I'll be waiting for the 3rd party bench tests on these cards and see how it truly stacks up but if the 7800xt does out perform the 4070 even with DLSS 3 on then it's a great option but if not, the 4070 might actually be the better choice here.

The RTX 4070 released at pretty much exactly the CAD equivalent to the US MSRP, so I think the RX 7800 XT will as well. Sadly, pricing for RX 6000 series cards is a bit higher in Canada than in the US, though they still generally have been offering better value than RTX cards have been. I would expect some models of the 7800 XT to be 680 or 690 CAD, 700 at the most for the cheapest models, but it might be worth paying a little extra for a higher quality cooler (Sapphire Pulse and Powercolor Red Dragon are likely to offer good quality for the price, and probably other models will too). The RTX 4070 typically goes for 810 CAD or more. The RTX 4070 definitely isn't terrible, but I think it's tough to argue that you should pay more for the Nvidia features, when it comes with significantly less Vram. The 7800 XT might eventually have improved upscaling implemented for it, and the ray tracing advantage doesn't show up in every game. The basic level of lumen in particular is extremely efficient in terms of the image quality you get relative to the performance cost, and it already works just as well on RX 6000 series cards as it does on Nvidia equivalents. In situations where Nvidia GPUs have the biggest ray tracing advantage over AMD cards, their performance is still getting absolutely hammered, and the fact that ray tracing uses more Vram is likely to be a big problem for a lot of Nvidia cards as well. The RTX 4090 can still absolutely destroy anything from AMD in moderate to heavy ray-tracing workloads, and still get worthwhile FPS, and the 4080 sometimes can as well, but those are insanely expensive cards.

Yeh the 7800xt is the standout card of the generation if the performance figures are even somewhat close to accurate. The 4070 FE costs £570 (same in dollars usually) and has great power consumption at 200w vs 263w so while upfront costs of the 7800xt is cheaper, it'll cost you more long term. The VRAM shouldn't matter too much except for bad ports on release days but I guess it does give that little bit of security but the main factor is performance, DLSS 3 is good, like, real good and it can actually out perform the 6950xt when on so I'd like to see tests of the 7800xt against the 4070 with DLSS 3 and FSR 2 on to see the actual performance data and that for me will be the deciding factor as a better performing 7800xt and cheaper up front costs will be worth the extra hidden cost of it's power consupmtion but if not, the 4070 will be the better choice imo.

I agree. A lot of people, including a lot of other tech channels, are failing to consider the importance of inflation when assessing pricing and value. Inflation has been a LOT higher than normal over the past three years. 500 USD today is equivalent to around 425 USD in 2020, and equivalent to around 440-450 two and a half years ago, when the 6700 XT first launched at the (admitedly bloated) price of 480. Even if there had been no GPU shortage, the 6700 XT likely would have launched at around 400-430, which would be around 450-480 USD today. The 7800 XT looks to be around 40-45% faster than the 6700 XT in standard raster, with 33% more Vram and a bunch of new architectural features. It's definitely a significant improvement in value over the previous generation. Of course, the previous gen 6000 series cards are themselves available at heavily discounted pricing, and have been off and on for around 9 months already, so they are also already a significant improvement in value over when they first launched, but this is normal, and has happened many, many times before with the pricing of previous gen cards. It's stupid when previous gen cards DON'T come down in price over time, especially right before or after new generation cards get released.

The 7800 XT looks to give about 40-45% improvement in standard raster performance over the 6700 XT, for a price which is actually lower than the 6700 XT's launch price, if you adjust for inflation (480 in early 2021 is roughly equivalent to 540 today). Even if the 6700 XT didn't have a bloated launch MSRP, the originally planned MSRP probably would have been around 400-430, which is only a little bit less than 500 USD today, if you account for inflation. Therefore, the 7800 XT is definitely still giving a significant improvement in performance per dollar and value, especially considering that it comes with newer architectural features, possibly even improved upscaling capability which might get really close to DLSS. A lot of people haven't realized just how good lumen is. We're just starting to see the first few games coming out that use it, other than Fortnite, which was the first to implement it maybe 10 months ago. The basic level of lumen looks very good relative to its performance cost, and it works just as well on RX 6000 series cards as it does on Nvidia cards. It is often worth using even on Nvidia cards, because using the hardware accelerated version of lumen doesn't look a lot better, and costs significantly more in performance, and basic lumen does already still come with a significant performance cost. Lumen is, so far, the most efficient real time ray tracing technology, and it doesn't even require any hardware RT to work, and runs just as well on AMD graphics cards. It's actually really amazing. People who work doing 3d rendering for non gaming stuff also consider it to be the most efficient form of ray tracing, and well worth using for some non-gaming purposes as well.

That is an ideal upgrade path. I suspect that the 7800 XT will have about the same or slightly lower standard raster performance than the 6800 XT, but the added features should still make it a better buy. I suspect that it will eventually have improved upscaling image quality over the 6000 series. 500 USD today is equivalent to about 425 USD in 2020, when the 6800 XT first launched at 650. The 7800 XT is not really an 800 XT class card, as it uses a mid-sized GPU, but it is definitely offering a big improvement over the 6700 XT, probably about a 40-45% increase in standard raster performance, 33% more Vram, more memory bandwidth, and all of the new features of the new architecture, possibly including improved upscaling image quality at some point. Even if the 6700 XT had not launched during a GPU shortage, it likely would have been around 400-430 USD, which if you adjust for inflation, isn't far off of 500 USD today. Of course, the 6000 series discounts have already made the current pricing for 6000 series cards a big improvement over the launch MSRP pricing for them, but the features of the 7800 XT will likely make it a better value than even the 6800 XT for 500.

Well... this looks promising. Looks like AMD is starting to learn something here. Also, keep in mind that these card might pull more power, but one of the ways NVIDIA is saving power is by cutting the memory bus, where these cards aren't crippled. I was worried they were going to play the same game that NVIDIA is. Nice to see that they're not and the pricing is good. However, I think the mind share is for NVIDIA is just too strong and they need to drop their prices even more. Basically, they need to employ the strategy they used with Ryzen.

the VRAM argument is just a marketing gimmick by AMD as games will be made for console specs first and RAM never increased from last gen to this gen (16GB still) so games wont really push it out too far and the only games that struggled with this are bad ports and they'd ultimately get patched and optimised with time so it really isn't as big of a deal for "futureproofing" as AMD makes it out to be.

4070ti is better by 5-10 fps in 1440p and 5fps avg in 4k on 99% of the titles in raw performance versus a 6800xt, so you should have slightly better performance on the 7800xt with far less money. Although the pricing of these cards are very competitive, they hardly have the performance leap one would hope for from one generation to another. Unless Amd is randomly being extremely misleading (which would get it massacred in reviews), there is no realistic way that the 7800xt won't actually beat the 6800xt by anywhere from 5-10% with Raster, and an even bigger advantage with Ray Tracing. Having better power efficiency, a lower price ($499 Msrp versus $510-530 street price), AV1 encoding, better FSR 3 support (Anti-Lag + is exclusive to Rdna 3), will probably cement it as a Strictly Better card than the 6800xt. It has the potential to be the "1080ti" of this generation, the one card that ticks all the right boxes (good price to performance, good vram with 16gb, decent power efficiency at 260w, decent ray tracing with the required Vram to not be bottlenecked, potentially good feature set).

So I bet if you spend a minute with some sliders on the 7800 XT it will consume around 200W. KZfaq is full of Radeon undervolting videos. I think a 7800 XT is a great deal for 500. Almost no chance that the 7800xt beats it in Raster (besides on some titles that favor Rdna 3 over Rdna 2), but it might equal or beat it in RT. What we do know is that the 7800xt crushes it in power efficiency, has Av1 Encoding, has Anti-Lag + (exclusive to Rdna 3) so will have the better Fsr3 Frame Generation support, and most importantly it has the price advantage.
