no they're working for their pockets. They know if it's only a 100-200 dollar difference people would still fetch for the 15% performance increase. This is just clever marketing. They're still going to make a profit out of it and quite a lot actually. I just hope their drivers have improved since the 1000 series, it's what made me go team green.

$1000 for the flagship was more than I dared to hope for. I was afraid we'd see a $1300 XTX and maybe a $1100 XT, but seeing $1000 and $900 put a smile on my face. Hopefully the lower prices continue down the scale, to put whatever 7700 and 7600 we might eventually see into the hands of people who are more financially responsible than I am. I've already got pieces of a Ryzen 7900X-based system coming, and a Radeon RX 7900 XT or even XTX might end up being the crown atop the king's head.

I needed to pull the trigger early due to some issues with my machine at the time and needing the uptime for work. I now have a Ryzen 7700x system with a 6900XT for it, it was a decent price for the card. This is really making me wish I dealt with a cheap card for a few months instead though; I really didn't think they'd go $1000 for their current top end card. Now I have some decisions. I went with a 7700x system anticipating upgrading next year but now I'm thinking I could do both cpu and card early next year. I have a brother that wants/needs a new computer so maybe I'll use my hand-me-downs as a base for his system. Its both sad and great to be seriously thinking about that.

tbh I think both will be faster than 4080, but RT won't be as fast, it will depend on if the people is interested on paying at least 200+ for a bit more on RT. Raster perf, if their 50-70% is true, it means that they may be around 4090 or less on that. What intrigues me is that they are really low on power consumption (300 and 355w cards) AND speeds 2.3 and 2.5 is not that much so, will be interesting how the partners will play with that and see how much they can extract in perf.

No comparisons whatsoever to the 4090 RTX was the biggest red flag I've seen in a while. Odds are high that AMD completely missed the mark not by a little here, but by a lot. People assumed that AMD would continue making steady progress and make further incursions into Nvidia's top-end premium card market, but it's quite likely that they haven't with the enormous boost that the 4090 had compared to the 3090. For the best of the best, it looks like the 4090 RTX remains the best way to go.

Well - What kept me on the NVIDIA side was the gaming performance under Linux. At first (a few years ago) AMD cards only could do some 2D acceleration (if they where working at all) under Linux. AMD seems to have made some improvements here, but the question is if these improvements are enough to play demanding games (I use Steam on Linux by the way). If AMD really have improved their Linux drivers considerably on the 3D acceleration front, maybe my next card will be an AMD card. But until I have confirmation the AMD cards are on par with the NVIDIA cards (driver and price per performance) it will be a tough choice.

The only thing you're giving up 7900XTX vs 4090 is ray tracing performance, the rasterization will, at worst, be on par and single digit % loss at 4k and at best be outright better. Not to mention that AMD have intentionally left a lot of headroom, they could easily have gone 450W to try to just outright win across the board but they decided against it after seeing the backlash to the Nvidia coolers and power draw. Another thing to consider, the same leakers that have basically predicted this 1:1 (prices aside since those sometimes literally change a day before they're shown) are saying that AIB have a lot of extra 4090 coolers and will just slap those on the 7900XTX, overclock it heavily and call it a day. So at the end of the day you'll probably be looking at a 1000$ reference card from AMD that is much smaller than the 4090, uses way less power and performe relatively the same OR a 1200$ AIB with a gigantic cooler that most likely beats the 4090 across the board in terms of rasterization. They're having their cake and eating it too.

I've always rooted for them over the alternatives and still do against Nvidia but this isnt them "caring about gamers" it just crosses paths with it. They're aggressively pricing because they've seen all the missteps Nvidia have made with the latest generation and are going for the jugular to get marketshare, yes it happens to coincide with helping out gamers too but that was never the goal. Any company pretending to be altruistic is not to be trusted quite frankly, they have a clear profit motive like every company should at its core they just realised pleasing the potential annoyed GPU customers will work greatly in their favor.

And if paying over 1.5k for a GPU doesn’t give you a heart attack you’re later exposed to a secondary cardiac risk whilst straining to lift the f@£king thing out of its box. Then a further risk whilst straining to crowbar it into your case. And then yet another risk whilst fleeing your burning house. Overall I calculate that owning a 4090 increases your net all-cause mortality risk by 70%.

The assumption I'm making is that the performance comparisons are going to be made closer to release to generate additional hype. Once reviewers have cards in hand and the review embargo is lifted ahead of the street date. Or they are going to let the review community do the advertising for them as the launch gets closer. Still I am super happy with my 6900XT and I will probably be sticking with AMD for my next build near the end of the year, or early next year. I will be really interested once we see what FSR3 can do with the new hardware.

Those of us who only use Linux for gaming are keenly looking for and awaiting the almighty benchmarks. I'm ok with a little less speed than the 4090 if it means the card runs cooler. And AMD has a good record of releasing performance updates via the MESA driver pipeline. On Linux you don't ever have to install or do anything when using AMD, it just works natively.

Based on RTX 6900 XT performance, and if you believe their claim of x1.7 performance over previous architechture, the RX 7900 should be around 91% to 111% the performance of a RTX 4090. For $900? @@paullasky6865 it’ll be a decent bit faster than the 4080. Go back and look at the 4080s specs and you’ll see it’s a pretty sizeable downgrade from the 4090 (around 25-30% weaker in terms of raw numbers [16384 cuda cores vs 9728 on the 4080]). The xtx is being put between the two in performance, but will likely be closer to, if not beating the 4090 in raster (edit: in some games). RT is a whole different ball game, but with 60% improvement on 6900xt rt performance and fsr 3 still to come with latency improvements and frame generation, suddenly the gap has closed massively between the two companies.
